Best Red Wine Glasses: Bordeaux and Burgundy Shapes

Red wine asks for more room than white. The only real question is whether the room should be tall and narrow or wide and round, and the answer depends on what you pour.

The red wine glass, Bordeaux or Burgundy

There are two classic red wine shapes, and they come from two regions. The Bordeaux glass is tall, with a long bowl that narrows only a little toward the rim. It suits Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and the other firm, tannic reds. The Burgundy glass is shorter and much wider, a balloon that tucks in hard at the rim. It suits Pinot Noir, Nebbiolo and the lighter, more perfumed reds, whose aromas need surface area and something to gather them.

A big bowl matters in two situations. The first is a wine with a lot going on in the nose: an older Burgundy, a good Barolo, a Northern Rhone Syrah. The second is a wine that is a little closed when it is opened, which a wide glass and a few minutes of swirling will help along. For a weeknight Malbec it matters much less, and a good all-purpose glass will do.

So the advice is simple. If you drink mostly Cabernet, Merlot or blends, buy Bordeaux glasses. If you drink mostly Pinot Noir, buy Burgundy glasses. If you drink both and want only one shape, the Bordeaux is the more forgiving of the two. Everything below is sold on Amazon by Amazon itself, and the four Zwiesel and Spiegelau picks are dishwasher safe glasses built to survive a normal household.

How we chose

  1. The right shape. A true Bordeaux or Burgundy bowl with a rim that turns in, not a generic red glass with a Bordeaux label.
  2. Thin rim, sound stem. Fine enough at the lip to drink from nicely, strong enough at the stem to survive a dishwasher and a crowded sink.
  3. Replaceable. Open stock or long-running collections, so one broken glass does not strand a set.
  4. Price per stem. We looked at the price of each glass, not the box, from about $15 to about $75.

We read makers’ specifications, warranties, care instructions and the sources listed at the end. We do not accept paid placements. How we choose

The 5 picks, in detail

Spiegelau Authentis Bordeaux Wine Glass Set of 4, Clear

Authentis is Spiegelau's machine-made everyday line, and the Bordeaux glass is its tall red wine shape. Spiegelau gives it a height of 232 millimeters, about 9.1 inches, and a bowl 96 millimeters across. The listing puts its capacity at about 22 ounces, made in Germany from lead-free crystal.

Spiegelau is the sister company of Riedel, and the shape shows it: a long bowl with enough width at its base for a big Cabernet to open up, and a rim that closes in gently. At about $15 a glass in the set of four, it costs about the same per stem as the Forté goblet, in a true Bordeaux shape.

Skip it if you want the thinnest possible rim. It is a sound everyday glass, not a feather-light one.

The catch. Stemware this tall needs room in the top rack. Wash with space around each glass.

Zwiesel Glas Pure Bordeaux Red Wine Glass (Set of 2)

The sensible entry pointNo. 2

Zwiesel Glas Pure Bordeaux Red Wine Glass (Set of 2)

Our take. A proper tall Bordeaux bowl in tough German crystal glass for about $17 a stem.

Pure is Zwiesel's modern line, recognizable by the angular shoulder where the bowl meets its upright sides. The Bordeaux holds about 23 ounces and stands 10.5 inches tall, which is a real Bordeaux size, and the rim tapers in to hold the aroma of a Cabernet or a Merlot.

The glass is Zwiesel's Tritan crystal, a lead-free glass made in Germany with titanium and zirconium in place of lead. The practical result is a glass that goes through the dishwasher for years without clouding and does not chip at the rim as easily as ordinary glass.

Skip it if you want a traditional round bowl; the angled profile is a matter of taste. The matching Pure Burgundy is sold the same way and at the same price if you drink more Pinot Noir.

The catch. At 10.5 inches it will not fit on the top rack of some dishwashers or in a low cabinet.

Zwiesel Glas Vervino Pinot Noir/Burgundy Glass, 32 oz (Set of 4)

The Burgundy glass to buyNo. 3

Zwiesel Glas Vervino Pinot Noir/Burgundy Glass, 32 oz (Set of 4)

Our take. A wide, thin-walled Burgundy balloon that holds 32 ounces and costs about $17 a stem.

Made in

Capacity
About 32 oz
Height

Bowl diameter
4.7 in

Care
Dishwasher safe, home and commercial

Vervino is Zwiesel's thin-walled line, with a fine stem and a wide base. The Burgundy glass is the classic balloon: about 32 ounces, 9.3 inches tall and 4.7 inches across at the widest point, with a rim that pulls in sharply. It is the shape to show off a Pinot Noir or a Nebbiolo, whose aromas are more of the pleasure than the taste.

It is made in Germany in Tritan crystal glass, and Zwiesel rates it for commercial as well as home dishwashers. That combination of a big, thin bowl and a dishwasher-safe glass is the reason to choose it over handmade Burgundy glasses at four times the price.

A 32 ounce bowl is a lot of glass for a small table. Pour about 5 ounces; the empty space above the wine is where the aroma collects, so do not fill it further.

The catch. The wide bowls take up a lot of cabinet and dishwasher space; four of them fill a top rack.

SCHOTT ZWIESEL Forté Burgundy Goblet (Set of 6), 25 oz

For the big tableNo. 4

SCHOTT ZWIESEL Forté Burgundy Goblet (Set of 6), 25 oz

Our take. A sturdier, shorter Burgundy glass for dinners of twelve and houses where glasses get used hard.

Made in
Germany
Keeps for
Many years; built heavier than the Vervino on purpose
Capacity
About 25 oz
Height
8.7 in
Bowl diameter
4.4 in
Material
Tritan crystal glass
Care
Dishwasher safe

Forté is the sturdy line in the Schott Zwiesel range, made for heavy use. The Burgundy goblet is a rounded bowl of about 25 ounces on a shorter stem, 8.7 inches tall, so it is steadier on a crowded table and easier to fit in a cabinet than the tall glasses above.

It is the right choice when you need a dozen red glasses for a holiday dinner and do not want to wince every time one is set down. It is still Tritan crystal glass from Germany and dishwasher safe.

Skip it if you want the finest rim you can buy. It is thicker at the lip than the Vervino, and you will notice it on a good bottle.

The catch. A heavier rim and stem than the finer glasses here; it is a workhorse, and it feels like one.

Riedel Superleggero Burgundy Grand Cru

If money is no objectNo. 5

Riedel Superleggero Burgundy Grand Cru

Our take. A 36 ounce Burgundy bowl that Riedel calls the largest and thinnest glass it has ever made on a machine.

Keeps for
Years with careful handling; this is a very thin glass
Capacity
About 36 oz
Height
About 10.9 in
Bowl diameter
About 4.5 in
Material
Machine-made crystal glass
Care
Dishwasher safe per Riedel; hand washing advised
Pieces
1 glass, boxed

Superleggero means super light, and Riedel describes the collection as the largest, thinnest and lightest glasses with the widest base it has produced by machine. The Burgundy Grand Cru holds about 36 ounces and stands about 10.9 inches, with an egg-shaped bowl that Riedel matches to Burgundy, Pinot Noir, Beaujolais and Nebbiolo.

In the hand it is closer to handmade stemware than anything else here, and it costs about as much. It comes one to a box, which is the right way to buy a glass like this: two for the good bottles, not twelve for a party.

Riedel lists it as dishwasher safe, but a glass this thin is safest washed by hand, held by the bowl, never twisted between bowl and foot. Skip it if the good bottles in your house are rare.

The catch. About $75 for one glass, and thin enough that one careless twist while drying ends it.

Compared.

Every comparison

Bordeaux or Burgundy, quickly

Bordeaux shape: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Syrah, most blends. Burgundy shape: Pinot Noir, Nebbiolo, Gamay, older and more delicate reds.

If you must own only one, the Bordeaux is the safer choice. A Pinot Noir in a Bordeaux glass is fine. A big young Cabernet in a Burgundy balloon can smell a little flat and hot.

How much to pour

About 5 ounces, whatever the size of the glass. A big bowl is not an invitation to fill it; the space above the wine is where the aroma gathers, and you need room to swirl.

Washing and drying

The Zwiesel and Spiegelau glasses are rated for the dishwasher. Give each one space, use the top rack if it fits, and skip the heated dry if you see spotting. When hand drying, hold the bowl, not the foot. Most stems break from a twist between the two.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a Bordeaux and a Burgundy glass?

A Bordeaux glass is tall with a long, fairly straight bowl, for firm, tannic reds like Cabernet. A Burgundy glass is shorter and much wider, like a balloon, for aromatic reds like Pinot Noir.

Do I need both shapes?

No. Buy the one that matches what you drink most. If you drink both evenly, a Bordeaux glass handles Pinot Noir better than a Burgundy glass handles Cabernet.

Does a bigger bowl really make a difference?

For aromatic wines, yes. A wide bowl gives the wine more surface in contact with air and more space for the aroma to collect. For a simple, fruity everyday red, the difference is small.

Can red wine glasses go in the dishwasher?

The Zwiesel, Schott Zwiesel and Spiegelau glasses here are rated for it. Riedel lists the Superleggero as dishwasher safe too, but at that thinness hand washing is the safer habit.

What is Tritan crystal glass?

Zwiesel's lead-free crystal glass, made in Germany with titanium and zirconium oxides. It is built to resist chipping and the clouding that repeated dishwashing causes in ordinary glass.
