The Best Ice Bucket and Wine Chiller for a Party

Nothing ends a party faster than warm white wine and a freezer out of ice. The fix is not one bucket but the right one for the job: ice for the bar, a chiller for the bottle, and a tub when the guest list gets long.

The ice bucket for a party

Three different objects get called an ice bucket. The first holds ice for drinks, with a lid and a scoop, and it is the one a home bar needs. The second holds a bottle of wine or Champagne at the table, with or without ice. The third is a big open tub full of ice and bottles, for a party where people help themselves.

Double-wall and vacuum-insulated stainless steel changed the first two. An insulated ice bucket keeps ice frozen through an evening without sweating a ring onto the table, and an insulated bottle chiller keeps an already cold bottle cold without the drips of an ice bath. What they cannot do is chill a warm bottle quickly. For that you still want ice and water, or a sleeve from the freezer.

So buy for the job. We read the maker specs and listings, noted what each one actually does, and sorted them from the $20 table chiller to the tub that holds a case of beer.

How we chose

  1. The right job. Ice for drinks, a bottle at the table, or a crowd. We sorted by what each one is built for.
  2. Insulation. Double-wall or vacuum-insulated stainless steel keeps ice longer and does not sweat onto the table.
  3. Capacity. Enough ice for a round of cocktails, or a bottle up to magnum size, or a dozen bottles for a party. Capacities are from the listings.
  4. Looks on the table. It will sit out all evening. Plain stainless steel or a clean finish beats novelty.

We read makers’ specifications, warranties, care instructions and the sources listed at the end. We do not accept paid placements. How we choose

The 6 picks, in detail

Simple Modern Vacuum Insulated Ice Bucket with Lid and Scoop, 100oz, Midnight Black

Best overallNo. 1

Simple Modern Vacuum Insulated Ice Bucket with Lid and Scoop, 100oz, Midnight Black

Our take. A vacuum-insulated ice bucket that keeps ice for the whole evening and never sweats onto the bar.

Keeps for
Years; covered by a limited lifetime warranty against defects
Capacity
100 oz
Material
Stainless steel, vacuum insulated
Includes
Lid and scoop
Base
Rubber, non-slip
Warranty
Limited lifetime (defects)

For a home bar, this is the bucket. It is vacuum-insulated stainless steel with a lid and scoop, holding 100 ounces of ice, which is plenty for several rounds of cocktails. The maker says it keeps ice and drinks cold for 24 hours.

The double wall means no condensation, so it can sit on a wooden bar cart or a linen tablecloth without leaving a ring, and a rubber ring on the base keeps it from sliding. Simple Modern backs it with a limited lifetime warranty that covers defects and lost insulation, though not dents and scratches.

Skip it if you need a bucket for chilling bottles. It is shaped for ice, and the listing does not claim it fits a wine bottle.

The catch. Built for ice, not bottles; the black finish shows scratches over time.

OGGI Stainless Steel Double Wall Wine Cooler

The sensible entry pointNo. 2

OGGI Stainless Steel Double Wall Wine Cooler

Our take. A plain double-wall steel sleeve that keeps a cold bottle cold at the table for the price of a cheap bottle.

Keeps for
Years; there is nothing to break
Type
Tabletop bottle chiller, no ice
Material
Stainless steel, double wall
Fits
Most standard wine and Champagne bottles
Care
Hand wash

The simplest useful thing on this list: a double-wall stainless steel cylinder that holds a standard bottle upright on the table. The insulation keeps a chilled white or Champagne at serving temperature for longer, and it keeps a red at cellar temperature on a warm evening.

It needs no ice and makes no puddle, so it can sit on a tablecloth all night. Oggi says it fits most standard bottles and works indoors or out.

Skip it if you need to chill a warm bottle. It holds temperature; it does not create it. It is also hand wash only.

The catch. It keeps cold bottles cold; it cannot chill a warm one.

Le Creuset Wine Cooler Sleeve, Flame

For chilling a warm bottleNo. 3

Le Creuset Wine Cooler Sleeve, Flame

Our take. The fastest way to bring a room-temperature bottle down to serving temperature without an ice bath.

Keeps for
Several years with care; the gel sleeve is the part that wears
Type
Freezer gel sleeve
Fits
750 ml bottles
Chills
To serving temperature in about 30 minutes (maker)
Holds cold
Over 90 minutes (maker)
Construction
Nylon over two gel packs

Le Creuset's sleeve is a freezer pack shaped for a wine bottle: pierce-resistant nylon over two inner gel packs, tapered at the top for contact and elastic at the sides for a snug fit. Keep it in the freezer, then slip it over a bottle when a guest arrives with something warm.

Le Creuset says it chills wine to serving temperature within 30 minutes and keeps it cold for over 90. It fits all 750 ml bottles, still or sparkling, and it folds flat for a picnic or a dinner at a friend's.

Skip it if you want something handsome on the table. It is a practical tool in a bright color, and it looks like one. Magnums will not fit.

The catch. Fits 750 ml bottles only, and it needs freezer space between uses.

Vacu Vin Wine Chiller, HIVE Stainless Steel Wine Cooler Bucket

For magnums and ChampagneNo. 4

Vacu Vin Wine Chiller, HIVE Stainless Steel Wine Cooler Bucket

Our take. A better-looking tabletop chiller with a honeycomb finish, sized for bottles up to 1.5 liters.

Keeps for
Years; plain steel with no gel or seals
Type
Tabletop bottle chiller, no ice
Material
Stainless steel, double wall
Fits
700 ml to 1,500 ml bottles
Finish
Polished steel, honeycomb pattern

Vacu Vin, the Dutch maker best known for its wine pump, makes the HIVE as a double-wall insulated stainless steel bottle cooler with a honeycomb pattern. Like the Oggi, it keeps a pre-chilled bottle cold for hours without ice or water.

The difference is size and finish. The HIVE fits most bottles from 700 ml to 1.5 liters, so a magnum of Champagne or a wide sparkling bottle goes in without a fight. The honeycomb reads as deliberate on a set table.

Skip it if your bottles are warm, for the same reason as the Oggi. Pair it with the Le Creuset sleeve, or chill in ice first and let this hold the temperature at the table.

The catch. Twice the price of the Oggi for the same basic job; you are paying for the look and the magnum fit.

S'well Stainless Steel Ice Bucket XL, 100oz, Teakwood

Ice and a bottle in oneNo. 5

S'well Stainless Steel Ice Bucket XL, 100oz, Teakwood

Our take. A triple-layer insulated bucket that holds ice for a long evening and also fits a standard bottle.

Keeps for
Years; hand wash to keep the finish
Capacity
100 oz (3 liters of ice)
Material
18/8 stainless steel, triple-layer vacuum insulated
Holds ice
Up to 60 hours (maker)
Fits
A standard wine or Champagne bottle
Care
Hand wash

S'well's XL bucket is 18/8 stainless steel with triple-layer vacuum insulation. It holds 3 liters of ice, comes with a stainless lid and a scoop, and S'well says it keeps ice cold for up to 60 hours. The outside stays dry.

The useful difference from the Simple Modern is shape: S'well says it fits a standard wine or Champagne bottle, so one bucket can hold ice for cocktails and then chill a bottle at the table. For a small apartment that is one fewer thing in the cabinet.

Skip it if you dislike printed finishes. The teakwood pattern is a wood-look print on steel, and some tables will suit a plain one better. It is hand wash only.

The catch. The printed wood-look finish is not to every taste, and it costs half again the Simple Modern.

BREKX Insulated Beverage Tub and Ice Bucket, Stainless Steel Silver, 12Qt

For a crowdNo. 6

BREKX Insulated Beverage Tub and Ice Bucket, Stainless Steel Silver, 12Qt

Our take. A double-wall steel tub that holds a dozen bottles in ice and does not leak onto the floor.

Keeps for
Many years; heavy-gauge steel with no lid or seals to fail
Capacity
12 qt (3 gallons)
Size
13.5 in across, 6.75 in tall
Material
0.7 mm stainless steel, double wall
Holds
12 to 15 12 oz bottles plus ice (maker)
Handles
Two, hinged

When the guest list passes a dozen, people serve themselves, and the right object is a tub. BREKX's Anchored tub is heavy-duty 0.7 mm stainless steel, double walled, 13.5 inches across and 6.75 inches deep, holding 12 quarts. The maker says that is twelve to fifteen 12 ounce bottles plus ice.

The double wall does two jobs. It keeps the ice longer than a single-wall galvanized tub, and it stops condensation from pooling on the floor or the table, which BREKX guarantees as leak proof. Hinged handles on both sides make it carryable when full, just.

Skip it for a dinner for six. It is a party object, and too large to leave on a set table. It will hold wine bottles upright only if the ice is deep, since it is shallower than a wine bottle is tall.

The catch. Shallower than a wine bottle is tall, so it suits beer and cans better than wine.

Compared.

Every comparison

Ice and water chills fastest

An insulated chiller holds temperature; it does not create it. To bring a warm bottle down quickly, the classic method still wins: a bucket filled with ice and cold water, not ice alone, so the whole bottle is in contact with the cold.

How much ice to buy

Ice for drinks and ice for chilling bottles are two separate piles, and a tub of bottles eats far more than a cocktail bucket. Buy more than you think; running out is worse than bagging the leftovers.

What to avoid

Skip single-wall metal buckets for a table set with linen; they sweat. Skip acrylic buckets that crack and cloud. And skip anything with a novelty shape, which is hard to fill and harder to clean.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an ice bucket and a wine chiller?

An ice bucket holds ice for drinks, usually with a lid and scoop. A wine chiller holds a bottle at the table, either with ice and water or, if insulated, empty around an already cold bottle.

Do insulated wine coolers chill a warm bottle?

No. Double-wall coolers like the Oggi and the Vacu Vin HIVE keep a cold bottle cold. To chill a warm one, use ice and water or a freezer sleeve like the Le Creuset.

How long does ice last in an insulated bucket?

Makers claim up to 24 hours for the Simple Modern and up to 60 for the S'well. In a warm room with the lid off and people scooping, expect an evening.

Can I put a wine bottle in an ice bucket?

In a tall enough one, yes. The S'well XL is sized for a standard bottle. Ice buckets built only for ice may be too short.

Why stainless steel?

It does not crack, stain or hold odors, and in a double-wall build it insulates well and does not sweat on the table.
