Best Whiskey Glasses: Glencairn, Norlan, Rocks Glasses

There are two whiskey glasses worth owning: a heavy tumbler for ice and a tulip-shaped glass for tasting neat. Six that do one job or the other very well.

The whiskey glass, for neat pours and for ice

The heavy cut-glass tumbler is what most people picture, and it is the right glass for whiskey on the rocks, an Old Fashioned, or a pour of bourbon at the end of the day. It is a poor glass for tasting a good single malt neat. The wide mouth lets the aroma drift off, and what reaches your nose is mostly alcohol.

For that, the whisky trade uses a nosing glass: a small bowl that narrows toward the rim and gathers the aroma. The Glencairn, launched in 2001 and developed with master blenders from five Scotch whisky companies, made that shape affordable and put it in nearly every distillery visitor center.

So the six below split into two camps. Three tumblers, for ice and cocktails, at three prices. Three nosing glasses, for sipping neat, including one double-walled design that looks like nothing else on the shelf. Most households want one set of each.

How we chose

  1. Job. Tumblers need a heavy base, room for a large cube and a steady hand-feel. Nosing glasses need a bowl that concentrates aroma and a rim that is easy to sip from.
  2. Material. Lead-free crystal or tough dishwasher-safe glass where possible. We note where a listing says otherwise.
  3. Care. What the maker says about the dishwasher, since a whiskey glass gets used often.
  4. Heritage without the markup. Makers with a real record in glass or whisky, at prices that make sense for something you will use most weeks.

We read makers’ specifications, warranties, care instructions and the sources listed at the end. We do not accept paid placements. How we choose

The 6 picks, in detail

GLENCAIRN Whiskey Glass, Gift Set of 2 in Twin Carton

Glencairn Crystal, East Kilbride, Scotland

Raymond Davidson of Glencairn Crystal designed the glass from the copita nosing glasses used in blending labs, with advice from master blenders at five of Scotland's largest whisky companies. It went into production in 2001, won the Queen's Award for innovation in 2006, and was the first glass endorsed by the Scotch Whisky Association.

The bowl is wide at the base for swirling and narrows toward the rim to hold the aroma, and the short, solid foot makes it steadier than a stemmed copita. It is about 4.5 inches tall and holds a normal 1 to 2 ounce pour with plenty of room. This set is lead-free crystal and dishwasher safe.

Skip it if you drink whiskey over ice. The bowl is too small for a cube, and the glass is built for tasting, not for a long drink.

The catch. Small and informal-looking; some find it a tasting tool rather than a glass to relax with.

ZWIESEL GLAS Paris Whiskey Glass 10.5 Ounce (Set of 6)

The sensible entry pointNo. 2

ZWIESEL GLAS Paris Whiskey Glass 10.5 Ounce (Set of 6)

Our take. A plain, heavy-based rocks glass in tough German Tritan crystal, six to a box for well under $10 each.

Germany

Capacity
About 10.5 oz
Size
3.5 in tall, 3.1 in across
Material
Tritan crystal, lead-free
Care

The Paris tumbler is the everyday rocks glass from Zwiesel Glas, the German maker whose glasses fill hotel and restaurant bars. It holds about 10.5 ounces, stands 3.5 inches tall, and has a thick base that sits well in the hand and survives being set down hard.

It is made in Germany in Tritan, Zwiesel's lead-free crystal, and it goes in the dishwasher. The shape is simple and straight-sided, with enough room for one large cube and a proper pour, and it doubles as a short water or juice glass.

Skip it if you want cut glass or a sense of occasion. It is clean and well made, and not the glass anyone photographs.

The catch. Plain enough that it reads as a good bar glass rather than a gift.

Riedel Tumbler Spey Whisky, Set of 2

The better tumblerNo. 3

Riedel Tumbler Spey Whisky, Set of 2

Our take. A decorated rocks glass from Riedel's tumbler collection, with a cut pattern that looks traditional without the weight of old cut crystal.

Keeps for
Years of dishwasher use
Set
2 glasses
Capacity
About 10.4 oz
Height
About 4 in
Material
Machine-made crystal, cut pattern
Care
Dishwasher safe

Riedel is best known for undecorated wine glasses. Its tumbler collection is the exception, and the Spey, named after the Scottish river at the heart of whisky country, carries a cut pattern that Riedel says draws on the Art Nouveau period. It is machine-made crystal, holds about 10.4 ounces and stands about 4 inches tall.

The generous surface suits a large cube and a short pour, and Riedel rates it dishwasher safe. It is the glass for someone who wants a rocks glass with some ornament but finds heavy cut crystal too formal.

Skip it if you want a set of six or eight for a party; sold in pairs, it gets expensive quickly.

The catch. Lighter in the hand than a traditional cut-crystal tumbler, which some drinkers miss.

Marquis by Waterford Markham Double Old Fashion Set of 4, 11 oz

The cut-glass tumblerNo. 4

Marquis by Waterford Markham Double Old Fashion Set of 4, 11 oz

Our take. Waterford's more affordable line: a proper deep-cut double old fashioned glass without the price of Irish crystal.

Made in
Italy
Keeps for
Decades with hand washing
Set
4 glasses, gift boxed
Capacity
11 oz
Size
3.75 in tall, 3.3 in across
Material
Lead-free crystalline
Care
Hand wash recommended

Marquis is Waterford's lower-priced range, and Markham is one of its best-known patterns: a deep, geometric cut around a heavy tumbler. This double old fashioned holds 11 ounces and stands 3.75 inches tall, a good size for whiskey on a large cube or a stirred cocktail.

The listing gives the material as lead-free crystalline and the origin as Italy, not Ireland. That is the trade: you get the look of Waterford cut glass, from a Waterford-owned line, at a fraction of the price. It comes in a Marquis gift box.

Hand washing is recommended, which is typical for cut crystal. Skip it if everything in your house must go in the dishwasher.

The catch. Not Irish-made Waterford crystal, and not for the dishwasher.

NORLAN WHISKY GLASS (Clear Single Glass with Polishing Cloth)

The modern nosing glassNo. 5

NORLAN WHISKY GLASS (Clear Single Glass with Polishing Cloth)

Our take. A double-walled glass that behaves like a nosing glass and holds like a tumbler, at a very light 4.4 ounces.

Made in
China
Keeps for
Years with hand washing
Capacity
About 5.9 oz to rim
Size
3.7 in tall, 2.5 in rim
Weight
About 4.4 oz
Material
Double-walled borosilicate glass
Care
Hand wash; no ice, freezer or microwave

Norlan was designed in 2015 by the company's co-founder Sruli Recht and refined with the Islay master distiller Jim McEwan. From outside it is a small tumbler. Inside, a second wall of borosilicate glass forms a narrowing nosing bowl, with raised ridges that set the spirit moving as you swirl, which Norlan says helps release ethanol before you smell the whisky.

It holds about 5.9 ounces to the rim, with a recommended pour of 0.7 to 1.4 ounces, and weighs about 4.4 ounces. Each glass comes boxed with a polishing cloth. The maker sells it one at a time, so buy two.

Norlan recommends hand washing and advises against ice, the freezer and the microwave. Skip it if you want a glass that can take rough handling or a cube.

The catch. Sold singly, hand wash only, and not for ice: a glass for neat pours and nothing else.

GLENCAIRN Cut Premium Whiskey Glass, Gift Set of 2

The giftNo. 6

GLENCAIRN Cut Premium Whiskey Glass, Gift Set of 2

Our take. The same famous nosing shape, mouth-blown and hand-cut, for the whisky drinker who has everything else.

Made in
Designed in Scotland
Keeps for
Decades, with care
Set
2 glasses, presentation box
Making
Mouth blown, hand cut
Shape
Standard Glencairn nosing glass
Care
Dishwasher safe per listing; hand washing is kinder to cut glass

This is the standard Glencairn made the old-fashioned way. The listing describes it as mouth blown and hand cut, with wrap-around cuts on the bowl, and notes that small variations between glasses come from the hand work. The shape is unchanged, so it tastes exactly like the everyday Glencairn.

It arrives as a pair in a presentation box, which makes it one of the better whisky gifts at this price. The listing says it is dishwasher safe, though most owners of hand-cut glass wash it by hand.

Skip it for yourself if you already own plain Glencairns. You are paying for the cutting, not for a better tasting glass.

The catch. The listing mentions both 24% lead and lead-free crystal; if lead content matters to you, ask the seller before buying.

Every comparison

Rocks glass or nosing glass

Use a tumbler for whiskey with ice or a splash of water, and for cocktails such as an Old Fashioned. Use a nosing glass for tasting a malt or a good bourbon neat. If you own only one, choose by how you drink: most bourbon drinkers want the tumbler, most Scotch drinkers want the Glencairn.

Ice

One large cube melts slower than several small ones and dilutes the drink less. Make sure the tumbler is wide enough for a 2 inch cube before you buy the tray. Never put ice in a double-walled glass like the Norlan.

Care

Dishwasher-safe crystal still clouds if you use too much detergent. Use a light dose and skip the heated dry. Wash cut crystal and double-walled glass by hand in warm water, never hot, and dry with a lint-free cloth.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best glass for drinking whiskey neat?

A nosing glass that narrows at the rim, such as the Glencairn. It gathers the aroma so you smell the whisky, not just the alcohol.

What is the difference between an old fashioned and a double old fashioned glass?

Size. A double old fashioned holds roughly 10 to 14 ounces, enough for a large cube and a generous pour. A single holds less, often 6 to 8 ounces.

Is the Norlan glass worth it?

For neat pours, many drinkers love it: it is light, it concentrates aroma and it looks unusual. It is hand wash only, sold singly and not meant for ice.

Are whiskey glasses dishwasher safe?

Most modern lead-free glasses are, including the Zwiesel Paris, the Riedel Spey and the standard Glencairn. Cut crystal and double-walled glasses are better washed by hand.

Is Marquis the same as Waterford?

Marquis is a Waterford line at a lower price. The Markham glasses are lead-free crystalline made in Italy, not the lead crystal Waterford is known for.
