Bath Towels vs Bath Sheets: Sizes and When to Upgrade

Utopia's jumbo sheets are 35 by 70 inches, the longest here, in ring-spun cotton at 600 GSM, with stitched hems. That is a genuine bath sheet size at a weight in the middle of the range: absorbent enough to dry a tall adult, light enough to dry on a rail overnight.

This is the sensible way to find out whether you like a bath sheet at all. If you do, keep these for the pool, the beach or a guest room and buy something better for every day. If you do not, you have spent little.

Utopia says to wash them cold and tumble dry low, separately, without bleach or fabric softener. Expect some lint in the first few washes, which is common with new cotton terry at this price.

The catch. Plain, standard cotton rather than long-staple, so it will not feel or last like the pricier picks.

The usual objection to bath sheets is that they stay damp. Onsen's answer is a waffle weave in US-grown Supima cotton: 38 by 67 inches, but at about 630 grams, far lighter than a plush terry sheet of the same size. The flat honeycomb weave dries quickly on a rail and does not go musty in a bathroom without a window.

It feels thin out of the package, and Onsen says so on the listing. The weave softens and becomes more absorbent over the first few washes. It is OEKO-TEX certified and sold one sheet at a time, or in a three-piece set.

Skip it if what you want from a bath sheet is the heavy, plush hotel feel. Waffle is the opposite of that.

The catch. Feels thin to anyone expecting plush terry, and it is sold singly at a price most brands ask for two.

H by Frette is the hotel line of Frette, the Italian linen maker, and this is its classic white bath sheet: 100% cotton single twisted terry with a piqué border, in a pair at 35 by 66 inches. It is what a good hotel bathroom looks like, and it goes with everything.

Single twisted terry has a little more body and a little less fluff than the zero-twist towels from Brooklinen. It is a towel that dries you briskly rather than one you sink into, and it holds up well to frequent washing, which is what a hotel towel is built for.

Skip it if you want color; this set is white. The listing gives no GSM.

The catch. No published weight or country of origin, and white only.

Coyuchi's Cloud Loom is long-staple organic cotton grown and woven in the Aegean region of Turkey, loomed with long loops into a lofty, plush towel. The bath sheet is 39 by 65 inches at 685 GSM, and it is certified to GOTS and Made Safe.

It sits just under Brooklinen in weight and is sold singly, so the price per sheet is the highest here. What you pay for is the organic certification, which matters to some buyers and not at all to others.

Coyuchi says to wash it cold on a gentle cycle and tumble dry low, and to keep it away from skin and hair products with peroxides, which can discolor it. Skip it if certification is not the point; Brooklinen is heavier for less.

The catch. Sold singly at a high price, and peroxide products can mark it.
