Best Down Comforter for Hot Sleepers and Summer

A hot sleeper does not need worse down. They need less of it, in a shell that lets heat and damp out.

The comforter for hot sleepers

The usual advice to hot sleepers is to buy a lower fill power. That is half right and mostly misleading. Fill power measures how lofty the down is, not how warm the comforter will be. Warmth comes from how much down is inside, the fill weight, and a summer comforter is simply one that holds less.

The second thing is the shell. Down needs a fabric woven tightly enough to keep clusters in, and a tight weave also slows the escape of heat and moisture. Cotton breathes better than polyester, and a quiet sateen or a crisp percale is the norm on good inserts. Wool fill works differently again: it takes up moisture from the air around you and releases it, which is why many people who sweat at night sleep better under wool than under anything else.

The five below are all lightweight or summer versions. Two are down, one is down alternative and two are wool, from about $120 to about $430 for a full or queen. Each is sold on Amazon by the brand itself.

How we chose

  1. Light fill, stated plainly. A lightweight or summer version from a maker that sells several weights, so you know where it sits in the range.
  2. Breathable shell. 100% cotton, sateen or percale, rather than a polyester microfiber that traps heat.
  3. Construction. Baffle boxes or quilting that keep a thin fill from drifting into the corners and leaving bare patches.
  4. Fill that suits the sleeper. Down for the least weight, down alternative for allergies and easy washing, wool for people who wake damp.
  5. Sold properly. Every pick is sold on Amazon by the brand, in a full/queen or queen size.

We read makers’ specifications, warranties, care instructions and the sources listed at the end. We do not accept paid placements. How we choose

The 5 picks, in detail

Brooklinen Down Comforter, Lightweight, Full/Queen

Best overallNo. 1

Brooklinen Down Comforter, Lightweight, Full/Queen

Our take. Real Canadian down in baffle boxes, with less of it, which is exactly what a hot sleeper needs.

Keeps for
Many years with a duvet cover and occasional professional cleaning
Size
Full/Queen
Fill power
600
Fill content
75% down, 25% down feather fibers
Shell
100% cotton sateen
Construction
Baffle box, up to 8 loops
Certification
Responsible Down Standard

Brooklinen sells its down comforter in three weights and is clear about each. The Lightweight is 75% down and 25% down feather fibers at 600 fill power; the All-Season is 700 fill and the Heavyweight 750. Brooklinen pitches the Lightweight at hot sleepers and warm climates. The down is certified Canadian down, to the Responsible Down Standard.

The shell is 100% cotton sateen, quiet rather than crinkly, and baffle box construction keeps the thin fill spread evenly. Up to eight loops hold it in a duvet cover, and it is labeled for the short and long sides.

Skip it if you sleep hot only in summer and cold in winter. In that case the All-Season in our down comforter guide, plus a light blanket in winter, is one purchase instead of two.

The catch. A 25% feather fiber share is high for the price, and Brooklinen does not publish a fill weight.

CUDDLE DREAMS Classic Wool Comforter (Lightweight for Summer, Queen)

The entry point, in woolNo. 2

CUDDLE DREAMS Classic Wool Comforter (Lightweight for Summer, Queen)

Our take. A thin Australian wool comforter for the price of a cheap synthetic, for sleepers who wake up damp.

Keeps for
Years with a duvet cover
Size
Queen
Fill
Australian wool
Shell
Jacquard cotton
Ties
8, at corners and edges
Certification
OEKO-TEX Standard 100

Cuddle Dreams fills this summer weight comforter with Australian wool inside a jacquard cotton shell, certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100. It has eight ties at the corners and edges for a duvet cover, and a short zipper so you can look at the fill yourself, which is a sensible touch for a natural fill.

Wool does not loft like down, so a wool comforter is flatter and drapes closer to the body. What it does well is handle moisture. It takes up damp from the air under the covers and lets it go again, so a warm night feels less clammy than it does under polyester.

Skip it if you want the puffy hotel look. Wool comforters are thin by nature, and this is the thinnest of the maker's three weights.

The catch. Less published about construction and care than the larger brands give, and a flat, dense look on the bed.

Brooklinen Lightweight Down Alternative Comforter - Full/Queen

No feathersNo. 3

Brooklinen Lightweight Down Alternative Comforter - Full/Queen

Our take. A washable, made-in-USA summer comforter for allergy households, built in baffle boxes like the brand's down.

Made in
USA, with imported materials
Keeps for
Several years; synthetic fill flattens sooner than down
Size
Full/Queen
Fill
Recycled polyester microgel
Shell
100% cotton sateen
Construction
Baffle box, corner loops
Certifications
OEKO-TEX Standard 100, Global Recycled Standard

Brooklinen fills its lightweight down alternative with a recycled polyester microgel, sewn into baffle boxes inside a 100% cotton sateen shell. It is certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100 and the Global Recycled Standard, and the listing says it is made in the USA from imported materials.

Brooklinen points the lightweight weight at warm sleepers and rooms above about 70°F. Unlike down, it is fine in a home washing machine, which matters to anyone who washes bedding often or has a pet on the bed.

Skip it if you have no reason to avoid down. Synthetic fill is heavier for the same warmth and loses loft sooner, so the down version below lasts longer for about $80 more.

The catch. Sateen is a little warmer to the touch than percale, and synthetic fill compresses over years of use.

WOOLROOM Deluxe Washable Wool Comforter Queen Size Light Weight Duvet Insert

The better woolNo. 4

WOOLROOM Deluxe Washable Wool Comforter Queen Size Light Weight Duvet Insert

Our take. Traceable British wool in an organic cotton cover, machine washable, with a published fill weight.

Keeps for
Many years; wool does not break down like synthetic fill
Size
Queen, light weight
Fill
100% British wool, 5.9 oz per sq yd
Cover
Unbleached organic cotton, 200 thread count
Care
Machine washable; line dry only
Certification
Allergy UK

Woolroom is a British wool bedding maker, and this is the light weight of its Deluxe comforter: 100% British wool, carded and quilted into an unbleached 200 thread count organic cotton cover so the fibers cannot migrate. Each comforter carries a QR code that traces the wool back to UK farms.

It is one of the few comforters in this guide with a stated fill weight, 5.9 ounces per square yard, which is the figure that actually tells you how warm a comforter will be. It is certified by Allergy UK and fully machine washable, then line dried.

Skip it if you have no way to line dry a queen comforter. Woolroom says not to tumble dry it, and wool takes time to dry through.

The catch. Line drying only, and like all wool it is flatter than down on the bed.

BOLL & BRANCH Down Duvet Insert, Full/Queen, Lightweight

The organic shellNo. 5

BOLL & BRANCH Down Duvet Insert, Full/Queen, Lightweight

Our take. Triple-washed down in a certified organic cotton shell, for buyers who want to know where every part came from.

Keeps for
Many years with a duvet cover
Size
Full/Queen, lightweight
Fill
Down, triple washed
Shell
100% certified organic long-staple cotton
Construction
Baffle box, 4 corner loops
Care
Machine wash cold, alone; tumble dry low
Certification
Fair Trade Certified (maker's statement)

Boll & Branch's lightweight insert is the lightest of its three down weights. The down is responsibly sourced and triple washed for a cleaner loft, and Boll & Branch says its products are traceable from farm to finish. The shell is certified organic long-staple cotton, woven tightly enough to be down-proof without harsh chemicals.

Baffle box construction keeps the fill in place, and four corner loops tie into the brand's duvet covers. Boll & Branch says it can be machine washed alone in cold water once a season and tumble dried on low, which may take several cycles.

Skip it if a published fill power is your deciding figure; Boll & Branch does not give one. Brooklinen's lightweight gives its number and costs $130 less.

The catch. No published fill power or fill weight, and the highest price here.

Compared.

Every comparison

Fill power and fill weight

Fill power is how much space one ounce of down fills, in cubic inches. Higher numbers mean bigger clusters that trap more air per ounce. Fill weight is how many ounces of down are in the comforter. Warmth depends on both, but for a hot sleeper the fill weight is the one that decides it.

A 700 fill comforter with very little down can sleep cooler than a 600 fill comforter packed full. Most makers do not publish fill weight, so read their own labels instead: lightweight, summer or warm sleeper versions are the ones to buy. Weight names do not match across brands.

Shell fabric

Look for 100% cotton. Percale feels cooler and crisper; sateen is smoother and a little warmer. Avoid polyester microfiber shells on a summer comforter, since they trap heat and damp.

The sheets matter as much as the comforter. Our guide to sheets for hot sleepers covers percale, linen and lyocell.

Down, down alternative or wool

Down gives the most warmth for the least weight and lasts longest. Down alternative washes easily and suits feather allergies, but it is heavier for its warmth and flattens sooner. Wool is flat and dense, but it handles moisture better than either, and it is the choice for people who wake up damp rather than simply warm.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best down comforter for hot sleepers?

A lightweight down comforter in a cotton shell, such as the Brooklinen Lightweight at 600 fill power. What matters most is a small amount of down, not a low fill power.

Is a higher fill power warmer?

Not on its own. Higher fill power gives the same warmth with less down. A comforter's warmth depends on fill power and fill weight together.

What is the best down comforter for summer?

One sold as a lightweight or summer weight by a maker that offers several weights, in a cotton shell. Many people also sleep under just a duvet cover or a light blanket in the hottest months.

Is wool or down better for night sweats?

Wool handles moisture better, taking up damp and releasing it, so many people who wake damp prefer it. Down is lighter and loftier. Persistent night sweats are worth mentioning to a doctor.

Are down alternative comforters cooler than down?

Not usually. Synthetic fill tends to be heavier for the same warmth and breathes less. Choose it for allergies or easy washing, not for coolness.
