MagicLinen makes its linen in Vilnius, Lithuania, and this robe is 53% European flax and 47% cotton, woven as a waffle, stone washed and certified to OEKO-TEX. The maker puts it at about 190 GSM, which is half the weight of the terry robes here. It has a hood, two pockets and a waist tie.

Linen is the reason to buy it. Flax fiber wicks moisture and dries fast, and it feels cool against damp skin in a way cotton terry never does. For a house in Texas or Florida, or for anyone who runs warm after a shower, this is the robe that will actually get used in August.

It is a blend, and we think that is right for a robe: pure linen robes are crisp and scratchy for the first months, while the cotton here softens the hand. Skip it if you want warmth. It will not give much in a cold bathroom.

The catch. Linen wrinkles and will always look slept in; that is the fabric, not a fault.

Frette has made linens for hotels since the nineteenth century, and H by Frette is its line of hotel-grade pieces sold for the home. The trade is weight. A robe this thick holds water and takes a long time to air dry, as owners mention. Skip it for a small, humid bathroom with one hook, and for warm climates.

The catch. Slow to dry on a hook, and heavy enough that some people find it too much in summer.

Onsen built its name on waffle bath towels, and the robe uses the same idea: a deep honeycomb weave in 100% Supima cotton, the extra long staple cotton grown in the United States. Longer fibers spin into a stronger, smoother yarn, which is why a Supima robe keeps its surface after years of washing instead of going fuzzy.

It sits between the Coyuchi waffle and a terry robe. Onsen says it is 30% lighter and 50% less bulky than a traditional robe, and it folds small enough to pack, while the deep waffle gives it more body than a flat spa robe. It is cut oversized and unisex.

It is the most expensive robe here, and a lot of that is the fiber. Skip it if you want warmth first; a waffle is a waffle. If you already own Onsen towels, this is the obvious match.

The catch. Around twice the price of the Coyuchi for the same basic weave; you are paying for the cotton.
