There is no best pillow, only the right one for the way you lie. Choose the fill for how it behaves, then the firmness for your sleeping position.

The bed pillow to match how you sleep

A pillow has one job: to fill the gap between your head and the mattress so your neck stays roughly straight. Side sleepers have the biggest gap and need the firmest, highest pillow. Back sleepers need something in the middle. Stomach sleepers need very little, and a soft, flat pillow is kinder to their neck than a lofty one.

The fill decides how the pillow gets there. Down is soft and moldable and lasts well, but it compresses under a heavy head. Feathers add structure, which is why many good down pillows hide a feather core inside a layer of down. Down alternative is washable and suits allergies, but it flattens soonest. Latex is springy and supportive, holds its shape the longest, and feels nothing like down.

The six below cover all three fills, from a feather and down pillow at about $30 to a $179 chambered one. They are sold one at a time in Standard size unless noted; the Pacific Coast comes as a pair. Buy one, sleep on it for a couple of weeks, and then buy the second.

How we chose

  1. Fill that fits the job. Down, down and feather, synthetic or latex, each chosen for how it supports rather than for its label.
  2. Firmness options. Makers that offer soft, medium and firm versions, so you can match the pillow to your sleeping position.
  3. Shell. A tightly woven cotton shell that keeps down and feathers in without a chemical coating.
  4. Care. Clear washing instructions, and fills that survive being washed or aired.
  5. Sold properly. Every pick is sold on Amazon by Amazon.com or by the brand itself.

The 6 picks, in detail

Coyuchi Down Feather Pillow Insert, Medium Support, Standard

Best overallNo. 1

Coyuchi Down Feather Pillow Insert, Medium Support, Standard

Our take. A feather core for support with pure down on both faces for softness, made in the USA in an organic cotton shell.

Made in
USA
Keeps for
Several years with a pillow protector and regular airing
Size
Standard
Fill
80% feather, 20% down core; pure down outer layers
Support
Medium
Shell
Organic cotton, down-proof

Coyuchi divides this pillow inside: an 80% feather, 20% down core gives it medium support and structure, and a layer of pure down on each side makes it soft to lie on. That combination suits side and back sleepers, which covers most people, and it is the design many hotel pillows use.

The fill is double washed and sourced from farms where the birds are humanely raised, and the shell is down-proof organic cotton. Coyuchi says all its down pillows are made in the USA. It also fills a standard sham neatly, so the same pillow serves as a sleeping pillow or a dressed one.

Skip it if you sleep on your stomach, where a softer all-down pillow is kinder to your neck. Coyuchi makes one.

The catch. Sold singly, so a pair is about $276, and the feather core makes it firmer than an all-down pillow.

Pacific Coast Goose Feather and Down Bed Pillows, Medium-Firm, Standard, Set of 2

The sensible entry pointNo. 2

Pacific Coast Goose Feather and Down Bed Pillows, Medium-Firm, Standard, Set of 2

Our take. A plain feather and down pillow in a cotton shell, sold as a pair for about $30 a pillow, priced to try feathers before spending more.

Keeps for
About 1 to 3 years, the usual range for feather and down pillows
Size
Standard, set of 2
Fill
Goose feathers and down
Firmness
Medium-firm
Shell
Cotton, down-proof weave
Certifications
Responsible Down Standard, OEKO-TEX Standard 100

This is the traditional feather pillow: goose feathers and down in a cotton shell woven tightly enough to be down-proof without a coating. Feathers give support, which is why Pacific Coast pitches this medium-firm version at back and side sleepers. The fill is certified to the Responsible Down Standard and OEKO-TEX Standard 100, and the brand sells it on Amazon.

Feathers need to be plumped. Expect to shake it out each morning, and to feel the occasional quill through the fabric. In return it breathes better than foam, molds to the head, and costs a fraction of the designer pillows.

Skip it if you want a soft, sinking down pillow; this is firmer and heavier than that. Skip it too if feathers poking through will bother you.

The catch. Feather-heavy fill is firmer and noisier than down, and the listing does not publish the down percentage.

Casper Sleep Original Pillow, Standard

Down alternativeNo. 3

Casper Sleep Original Pillow, Standard

Our take. A washable down alternative pillow with a firmer pillow inside a softer one, for a household that wants no feathers.

Keeps for
About 1 to 2 years, typical for synthetic fill
Size
Standard
Fill
Down alternative fiber
Construction
Pillow-in-pillow
Feel
Medium-soft, medium loft
Cover
100% cotton percale
Care
Machine washable

Casper's Original Pillow uses a pillow-in-pillow construction: a supportive inner pillow sits inside a softer outer one, both filled with down alternative fiber. The idea is that the outside feels soft while the inside holds the head up, and it works for more sleeping positions than a single-chamber synthetic pillow.

The cover is 100% cotton percale, and the whole pillow is machine washable. It is medium-soft with a medium loft, which suits back sleepers and many stomach sleepers. Amazon sells it directly.

Synthetic fill is the least durable pillow material, so expect to replace it sooner than down or latex. Skip it if you are a side sleeper with broad shoulders who needs a tall, firm pillow.

The catch. Synthetic fill flattens sooner than down or latex, and the loft may be too low for side sleepers.

Avocado Organic Green Pillow, Standard

LatexNo. 4

Avocado Organic Green Pillow, Standard

Our take. Shredded organic latex and kapok with a zipper, so you can take out fill until the height is right.

Made in
USA (California)
Keeps for
Up to about 3 years, longer than synthetic fill (Sleep Foundation estimate)
Size
Standard
Fill
Shredded organic Dunlop latex (70%) and kapok (30%)
Adjustable
Zippered, extra fill pack included
Certifications
GOTS, GOLS, GREENGUARD Gold
Care
Cover machine wash cold; fill not washable

Avocado fills this pillow with shredded GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex and GOTS-certified organic kapok fiber, inside an organic cotton cover with a zipper. Avocado's own tag lists the fill as 70% latex and 30% kapok by weight, and says it is made in California with domestic and imported material.

The zipper is the point. Latex pillows are often too high out of the box, and here you remove fill until the loft suits you. Avocado includes an extra fill pack for those who want it higher. The feel is springy and substantial, more like latex than down, and it holds its shape far longer than synthetic fiber.

Wash only the cover; the fill is not machine washable. Skip it if you want the soft, sinking feel of down. It will not give you that at any loft.

The catch. Heavy and springy rather than soft, and the fill cannot be washed, only the cover.

Brooklinen Down Pillow, Standard, Firm

For side sleepersNo. 5

Brooklinen Down Pillow, Standard, Firm

Our take. Brooklinen's firmest down pillow, with a dual-core build for side sleepers who find all-down pillows collapse.

Made in
Canada
Keeps for
Several years with a pillow protector
Size
Standard, slightly oversized
Fill
Canadian duck down clusters and feathers
Firmness
Firm, dual-core
Shell
Long-staple cotton sateen
Certifications
DOWNMARK, OEKO-TEX Standard 100

Side sleepers need a pillow that stays tall under the weight of the head, which is where soft down pillows fail. Brooklinen's Firm pillow uses a dual-core build that blends down clusters and feathers for more support. The fill is Canadian duck down, certified to the DOWNMARK standard, and the pillow is made in Canada.

The shell is long-staple cotton sateen, quiet and smooth, and the pillow is slightly oversized so it fills a pillowcase or sham to the corners. Every component is certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100.

Skip it if you sleep on your back or stomach; it will push your head too far forward. Brooklinen sells a Plush version for stomach sleepers.

The catch. Firm means firm: too tall for most back and stomach sleepers, and it costs more than Coyuchi's medium pillow.

BOLL & BRANCH Down Chamber Pillow, Medium, Standard

If money is no objectNo. 6

BOLL & BRANCH Down Chamber Pillow, Medium, Standard

Our take. A chambered down pillow with traceable U.S. down outside and a feather-blend chamber inside, in organic cotton.

Made in
Filled and finished in the USA
Keeps for
Several years with a pillow protector
Size
Standard
Fill
Down outer, feather and down inner chamber
Firmness
Medium (Soft and Firm also made)
Shell
100% certified organic long-staple cotton
Certification
IDFL Down Standard
Care
Machine wash cold, alone; tumble dry low

Boll & Branch's Down Chamber Pillow puts a feather and down inner chamber inside an outer layer of down. The Medium version sits between the all-down Soft and the Firm, with enough support for back sleepers and most side sleepers. The down and feathers come from U.S. farms, are triple washed, and are certified to the IDFL Down Standard, which traces them to the parent farm. The pillow is filled and finished in the United States.

The shell is certified organic long-staple cotton, woven tightly enough to be down-proof without chemical finishes. Boll & Branch says to machine wash it alone in cold water once a season and tumble dry on low with wool dryer balls, which may take a few cycles.

It is the most expensive pillow here. Skip it unless the traceable down matters to you; Coyuchi's chambered design does much the same for less.

The catch. About $360 for a pair, and the maker does not publish a fill power.

Compared.

Every comparison

Matching firmness to position

Side sleepers: firm and tall, such as the Brooklinen Firm or a well-filled latex pillow. Back sleepers: medium, such as the Coyuchi. Stomach sleepers: soft and low, or a latex pillow with most of the fill taken out.

Many people sleep in more than one position. Buy for the position you wake up in.

Care and replacement

Use a zippered pillow protector under the pillowcase; it keeps oils and sweat out of the fill and is the cheapest way to make a pillow last. Plump down and feather pillows every morning and air them on a dry day.

The Sleep Foundation suggests replacing most pillows every 1 to 2 years, sooner for polyester. A simple test: fold the pillow in half. If it does not spring back, it is finished.

Allergies

Down alternative and latex avoid feathers entirely. Many reactions blamed on down come from dust in poorly cleaned fill, so if you want down, choose one that is washed and certified, as every down pick here is.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best pillow for side sleepers?

A firm, high pillow that fills the gap between ear and shoulder. Firm down and feather pillows and latex pillows both work; soft down pillows usually collapse.

Down or down alternative pillow?

Down molds better and lasts longer. Down alternative is cheaper, washes more easily and avoids feathers.

What is a latex pillow like?

Springy and supportive, and it holds its shape much longer than fiber fills. It does not squash flat the way down does.

How often should you replace pillows?

The Sleep Foundation suggests every 1 to 2 years for most pillows, and a pillow that stays folded when you fold it in half is due.

Can you wash a down pillow?

Many can be machine washed on a cold, gentle cycle and dried low until completely dry. Check the maker's label; latex fill should not go in the machine.
