Best Flannel Sheets: Weight, Pilling and Where Made

Flannel is judged by one number and one habit: how heavy the cloth is, and whether it sheds little balls of fluff by February. Five sets, sorted by both.

The flannel sheets for a cold house

Flannel is ordinary cotton, woven loosely and then brushed with fine wire rollers until the surface fibers stand up and trap air. That raised nap is the whole point. It is why flannel feels warm the moment you get in, where percale feels cool until your own heat catches up.

Thread count means nothing here. Flannel is sold by weight, either in ounces per square yard, the American habit, or in grams per square meter, GSM. Five ounces is about 170 GSM and six ounces about 203. Below about 150 GSM a flannel sheet feels thin and wears through quickly; from 170 up it has real body. The better mills brush both sides of the cloth, not just the face, so the sheet is soft against the blanket too and the fibers are anchored more evenly.

Pilling is the complaint about cheap flannel, and it comes from short, loose fibers working free and tangling. Longer, combed cotton and a sheared finish after brushing cut it down. Portugal has long been where the good flannel is woven, and four of the five sets below come from Portuguese mills.

How we chose

  1. Weight. Stated in ounces or GSM by the maker. We favored 170 GSM and up, and say so when a maker does not publish a figure.
  2. Brushing and finish. Brushed on both sides where the maker says so, and sheared or combed to reduce pilling.
  3. Where it is woven. Portuguese mills have the longest reputation for flannel; we note origin where it is published.
  4. Fit. Pocket depth that clears a modern mattress, because a fitted sheet that pops off at 3 a.m. is not warm.

We read makers’ specifications, warranties, care instructions and the sources listed at the end. We do not accept paid placements. How we choose

The 5 picks, in detail

Lands' End Comfy Super Soft Cotton Flannel Bed Sheet Set, 5oz, Queen, Bering Sea Blue

Best overallNo. 1

Lands' End Comfy Super Soft Cotton Flannel Bed Sheet Set, 5oz, Queen, Bering Sea Blue

Our take. A 5 ounce Portuguese flannel, combed, brushed on both sides and sheared, from a family-owned mill.

Made in
Portugal
Keeps for
Many winters; the maker builds it to pill less
Weight
5 oz per square yard, about 170 GSM
Fabric
100% combed cotton flannel, brushed and sheared
Pocket
14 in, fits mattresses up to 15 in
Sold
Sets or individual pieces

This is the flannel most often held up as the standard for the price. Each square yard weighs 5 ounces, about 170 GSM, of combed cotton, woven by a family-owned mill in Portugal. Lands' End says the cloth is brushed on both sides and then sheared, which is the step that trims loose fibers and keeps pilling down.

The flat sheet is cut longer than standard, and the fitted sheet has elastic all the way around and a 14 inch pocket for mattresses up to 15 inches. The colors run from white and ivory to reds and blues, sold in sets or by the piece, so a torn pillowcase can be replaced on its own.

It is the right weight for most bedrooms: warm on a cold night without the heft of the 6 ounce Coyuchi. Skip it if your mattress is deeper than 15 inches.

The catch. The 14 inch pocket is shallow for a modern pillow-top mattress.

Eddie Bauer Flannel Sheet Set, Queen, Elk Grove Grey

The sensible entry pointNo. 2

Eddie Bauer Flannel Sheet Set, Queen, Elk Grove Grey

Our take. Plain, brushed 100 percent cotton flannel at a price that makes it easy to own two sets.

Keeps for
A few winters; expect some softening and a little pilling
Fabric
100% cotton flannel, brushed
Weight
Not stated on the listing
Queen set
Flat 102 x 90 in, fitted 80 x 60 in, 2 standard cases
Care
Wash cold, gentle; tumble dry low; no bleach or softener

Eddie Bauer's flannel sets are the familiar cabin kind: 100 percent cotton, brushed, in plaids, woodland prints and solids such as this grey. The queen set is a flat sheet of 102 by 90 inches, a fully elasticized fitted sheet and two standard pillowcases.

The maker asks for a cold, gentle wash with like colors, a low tumble dry, and no bleach or fabric softener. That care matters more with flannel than with other sheets, because heat and softener are what break down the nap fastest.

Eddie Bauer does not publish a weight or a country of origin on the listing, and that is the reason it sits at the bottom of the range. Buy it for a guest room or a child's bed. Skip it if you want a set to last a decade.

The catch. No published weight, and budget flannel pills sooner than the heavier Portuguese sets.

Tribeca Living Yarn Dyed 100% Cotton Queen Flannel Bed Sheet Set, 180-GSM, Heather Chili Pepper Red

The most weight for the moneyNo. 3

Tribeca Living Yarn Dyed 100% Cotton Queen Flannel Bed Sheet Set, 180-GSM, Heather Chili Pepper Red

Our take. A 180 GSM Portuguese flannel, yarn dyed and deep pocketed, for about half the price of the famous names.

Made in
Portugal
Keeps for
Several winters with cool washing
Weight
180 GSM, about 5.3 oz per square yard
Fabric
100% cotton flannel, yarn dyed
Pocket
Fits mattresses up to 21 in deep
Set
Flat, fitted, 2 pillowcases

At 180 GSM, about 5.3 ounces, this is heavier than Lands' End's well-known 5 ounce flannel and costs a good deal less. It is made in Portugal from 100 percent cotton, and the color is dyed into the yarn before weaving rather than printed on the surface, so the heathered shades hold through washing.

The fitted sheet has an extra-deep pocket for mattresses up to 21 inches, which makes it the right choice for a pillow top or a bed with a thick topper. The set is a flat sheet, fitted sheet and two pillowcases.

Tribeca Living does not say on the listing whether both sides are brushed, and it is a newer name without the long record of the sets further up. Skip it if you want a plain white; the yarn-dyed range runs to heathers.

The catch. The listing does not say whether the back is brushed as well as the face.

Coyuchi Cloud Brushed Organic Flannel Sheet Set, Queen

The heaviestNo. 4

Coyuchi Cloud Brushed Organic Flannel Sheet Set, Queen

Our take. A 6 ounce organic cotton flannel, woven in Portugal, for the coldest bedroom in the house.

Made in
Portugal
Keeps for
Many winters; the maker says it softens with washing
Weight
6 oz per square yard, about 203 GSM
Fabric
100% GOTS certified organic cotton flannel
Queen set
Flat 90 x 106 in, fitted 60 x 80 x 15 in, 2 cases 20 x 32 in
Care
Wash cold, gentle; tumble dry low; no bleach or softener

Coyuchi's Cloud Brushed flannel weighs 6 ounces per square yard, about 203 GSM, which makes it the heaviest set here. It is 100 percent GOTS certified organic cotton, made and woven in Portugal, and Coyuchi says its own weaving and brushing process reduces pilling and shrinking.

The queen set is a flat sheet of 90 by 106 inches, a fitted sheet with a 15 inch pocket and two standard pillowcases of 20 by 32 inches. Coyuchi recommends a cold, gentle wash, a plant-based detergent without bleach or whiteners, and wool dryer balls in place of softener.

Six ounces is a lot of cloth. For a warm sleeper or a heated bedroom it can be too much. Buy it for a cold house, a drafty room or a bed by a window.

The catch. Too warm for some sleepers, and the price is close to double the Lands' End set.

BOLL & BRANCH Flannel Sheet Set, Queen, White

If money is no objectNo. 5

BOLL & BRANCH Flannel Sheet Set, Queen, White

Our take. Organic cotton flannel, brushed and sheared three times, with the deepest pocket of the group.

Made in
Portugal
Keeps for
Many winters; triple shearing is aimed at pilling
Fabric
100% certified organic long-staple cotton
Finish
Brushed, triple sheared
Weight

Pocket
17 in (Amazon listing); up to 18 in mattresses (maker)
Certifications
GOTS; OEKO-TEX Standard 100; Fair Trade Certified

Boll & Branch makes its flannel from long-staple, certified organic cotton, woven by artisans in Portugal. The finish is the story: the cloth is brushed and then sheared three times, which leaves a smooth, velvety surface with fewer loose fibers to pill. The sets are GOTS certified and tested to OEKO-TEX Standard 100.

The fitted sheet has full elastic banding and a deep pocket, listed at 17 inches on Amazon and for mattresses up to 18 inches on the maker's site, the most generous here. Boll & Branch asks for a cold wash, a low or medium dry, and no bleach or softener, and warns that some shrinkage is natural.

Boll & Branch does not publish a weight in ounces or GSM, so you are paying for fiber, finish and fit rather than heft. Its own site has usually been cheaper than Amazon; compare before buying.

The catch. No published weight, and the Amazon price has run well above the maker's own.

Every comparison

Ounces, GSM and what to look for

One ounce per square yard is about 34 GSM. So 4 ounces is about 135 GSM, 5 ounces about 170 and 6 ounces about 203. For a winter sheet, 170 GSM is a sound floor. Heavier is warmer, not better; a 6 ounce sheet in a heated room can be too much.

If a maker publishes no weight at all, assume it is on the lighter side and judge by price and origin.

Keeping the nap

Wash flannel cold on a gentle cycle, dry it low, and take it out promptly. Skip fabric softener and dryer sheets, which coat the fibers and flatten the nap. Wash new flannel alone the first time; it sheds lint early.

A little pilling in the first few washes is loose fiber working out and usually settles. Pilling that keeps getting worse is short-staple cotton, and no care will fix it.

Brushed on both sides

Cheap flannel is often brushed on the face only. Brushing both sides makes the sheet softer against the blanket, adds a little loft and balances the fabric. Lands' End says its 5 ounce flannel is brushed on both sides; most makers do not say, so where it matters, ask or check the maker's page.

Frequently asked questions

What weight of flannel sheet is best?

For winter, 170 GSM, about 5 ounces per square yard, or heavier. Six ounces, about 203 GSM, is for a cold room or a cold sleeper.

Does thread count matter for flannel?

No. Flannel is loosely woven and then brushed, so thread count is not a useful measure. Look for weight in ounces or GSM instead.

Why do flannel sheets pill?

Short or loose cotton fibers work free and tangle into little balls. Combed or long-staple cotton, shearing after brushing, cool washing and no dryer heat all reduce it.

Should I wash flannel sheets before using them?

Yes. Wash them alone in cold water the first time; new flannel sheds lint, and the first wash is when most of it comes out.

Are flannel sheets too hot?

They are warmer than percale by design. In a heated bedroom a 5 ounce flannel is usually comfortable; a 6 ounce flannel is for cold rooms.
