Best Mattress Toppers: Latex, Wool and Featherbeds

A topper changes how a bed feels for a fraction of the cost of a new mattress. It will not fix one that sags. Pick the fill by what you want to change: softness, support or temperature.

The mattress topper that buys a good mattress more years

A mattress topper does three jobs, and most buyers only want one of them. It can make a firm bed softer. It can relieve the pressure on shoulders and hips for a side sleeper. Or it can change the temperature of the bed, making it cooler or warmer. The fill you choose decides which of those it does well.

Natural latex is springy and supportive, with a quick push back that owners describe as floating rather than sinking. Wool is thinner and firmer than people expect; its real talent is moisture and temperature, keeping a bed dry and even in both seasons. A featherbed is the old European answer: a deep, soft, baffled cushion of feathers and down that makes any mattress feel like a grand hotel's, and needs shaking out to stay that way.

What a topper cannot do is repair a mattress that has already dipped. A soft layer follows the shape of whatever is under it, so a sag becomes a softer sag. If the mattress is sound and simply too firm, too hot or too tired on the surface, a good topper is money well spent. If it is broken, save for the mattress.

How we chose

  1. Fill, stated plainly. Natural or organic latex and its certification, wool type, or the feather to down ratio for a featherbed.
  2. Thickness for the job. Two to three inches of latex to change the feel of a bed; an inch or so of wool to change its temperature.
  3. Cover and care. A cotton or wool cover, and whether the topper or its cover can be washed at home.
  4. Certifications. GOLS for latex, GOTS for organic cotton, OEKO-TEX Standard 100, and the Responsible Down Standard for feathers.
  5. Who sells it. Sold by the maker itself on Amazon, so returns and warranty questions go to the people who made it.

We read makers’ specifications, warranties, care instructions and the sources listed at the end. We do not accept paid placements. How we choose

The 5 picks, in detail

Avocado Eco Organic Latex Mattress Topper - Medium Feel - 3 inch - Organic Cotton Cover, Queen

Best overallNo. 1

Avocado Eco Organic Latex Mattress Topper - Medium Feel - 3 inch - Organic Cotton Cover, Queen

Our take. Three inches of organic Dunlop latex in an organic cotton cover, with nearly every safety certification on the market.

Keeps for
Many years; Dunlop latex is dense and slow to wear
Fill
GOLS organic Dunlop latex
Thickness
3 in (2 in also sold)
Feel
Medium (plush also sold)
Cover
GOTS organic cotton
Certifications
MADE SAFE, eco-INSTITUT, OEKO-TEX, Greenguard Gold

Avocado's topper is GOLS certified organic Dunlop latex under a GOTS certified organic cotton cover, and the listing adds MADE SAFE, eco-INSTITUT, OEKO-TEX, Greenguard Gold and formaldehyde-free certifications. That is the most thoroughly documented topper here, which matters to people buying latex specifically to avoid synthetic foam.

Three inches is enough to change the character of a bed, not just soften its surface. The medium feel gives pressure relief at the hips and shoulders without the sink of a plush layer. A 2 inch version and a plush feel are also sold if you want less.

Skip it if the price of a topper is approaching the price of a new mattress for you; at that point the mattress may be the better buy. It is also heavy, and awkward for one person to put on a bed.

The catch. Expensive for a topper, and three inches of latex is a two person lift.

Pure Green Natural Latex Mattress Topper - Medium Firmness - 2 Inch - Queen Size (GOLS Certified Organic)

The sensible entry pointNo. 2

Pure Green (SleepOnLatex) Pure Green Natural Latex Mattress Topper - Medium Firmness - 2 Inch - Queen Size (GOLS Certified Organic)

Our take. Certified organic latex from the maker, for about a third of the price of the big name versions.

Keeps for
Many years; natural latex holds its shape far longer than memory foam
Fill
Natural latex
Thickness
2 in
Firmness
Medium (soft and firm also sold)
Certifications
GOLS organic; Fair for Life
Size
Queen

SleepOnLatex sells its own Pure Green topper on Amazon, and the listing is refreshingly short: two inches of natural latex from organically grown rubber trees, certified to the Global Organic Latex Standard, from a Fair for Life certified supply. It comes in soft, medium and firm; medium is the safe choice for most people adding a layer to a firm bed.

Two inches of latex is enough to take the edge off a hard mattress and give a side sleeper's shoulder somewhere to go. Latex stays cooler than memory foam because it does not soften with body heat, and it springs back instantly, so you do not feel stuck in a hollow when you turn over.

Skip it if you want a plush, cloud-like bed; that is the featherbed below. The listing does not describe a cover in detail, so plan on a fitted mattress protector over it.

The catch. Latex is heavy and floppy to move, and a bare latex topper wants a protector over it.

Woolino Wool Mattress Topper, Merino Wool Fill, Organic Cotton Sateen, 1.2 in, Queen Size 60 x 80 in

The one for temperatureNo. 3

Woolino Wool Mattress Topper, Merino Wool Fill, Organic Cotton Sateen, 1.2 in, Queen Size 60 x 80 in

Our take. A thin merino layer that keeps a bed dry and even in every season, and goes in the washing machine.

Keeps for
Years; wool compresses slowly and can be refluffed in the sun
Fill
Merino wool, 1.2 in
Cover
Organic cotton sateen
Certification
OEKO-TEX Standard 100
Size
Queen 60 x 80 in
Care
Machine wash cold, wool cycle

Wool toppers are not about softness. Woolino's is 1.2 inches of merino wool fill in an organic cotton sateen cover, OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified. It cushions a little, but what owners notice is the climate: wool absorbs moisture vapor and releases it, so a hot sleeper wakes up less clammy and a cold one stays warmer.

The maker says to machine wash cold on a wool cycle, which is unusual for a topper and a real advantage over latex or foam. It also comes with a cotton canvas bag for storing it out of season.

Skip it if the mattress is too hard. An inch of wool will not change the feel much; the latex picks do that. And expect the wool to compress over the first months, which is normal.

The catch. Adds warmth control more than softness, and wool compresses with use.

Cuddledown Traditional Featherbed, Queen Size

The featherbedNo. 4

Cuddledown Traditional Featherbed, Queen Size

Our take. The old European hotel bed: a baffled cushion of feathers and down, made to order in Maine.

Made in
USA (made to order in Maine, from imported materials)
Keeps for
Many years, with daily shaking and a cover
Fill
95% feathers, 5% down, RDS certified
Shell
100% cotton twill
Construction
Baffle box, 4 in side gusset
Certification
OEKO-TEX Standard 100
Size
Queen, 60 in wide

Cuddledown has made down bedding in Maine for decades, and its Traditional Featherbed is made to order there. The fill is 95% feathers and 5% down, certified to the Responsible Down Standard, in a 100% cotton twill shell with a 4 inch side gusset and interior baffle boxes that stop the fill from drifting to the edges.

Feathers give the springy lift; the small share of down adds softness. The result is the deep, sink-in bed people remember from European hotels. The shell is OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified, and it measures 60 inches wide for a queen.

Skip it if you do not want a daily chore. A featherbed needs shaking out to keep its loft, it needs a cover to keep it clean, and quills can occasionally work through. People who want support rather than softness should buy latex.

The catch. Needs daily shaking and a protective cover, and gives softness rather than support.

Sleep & Beyond 100% Natural myWoolly Latex Mattress Topper, 3" Thick, Ivory Queen 60"x80"

If money is no objectNo. 5

Sleep & Beyond 100% Natural myWoolly Latex Mattress Topper, 3" Thick, Ivory Queen 60"x80"

Our take. Wool and latex together, hand tufted, for a bed that is both cushioned and climate controlled.

Keeps for
Years, with regular turning and airing
Fill
Shropshire wool, natural latex noodles, wool puffs
Fill weight
3,000 gsm
Thickness
3 in
Construction
Hand tufted, 5 in border tufting, 2 straps
Size
Queen 60 x 80 in

Sleep & Beyond is a wool bedding specialist, and the myWoolly Latex is its most elaborate topper. It is 3 inches thick, filled with washable Shropshire wool batting, natural latex noodles and wool puffs, 3,000 grams per square meter in all, and hand tufted with a 5 inch perimeter border and two straps to hold it in place.

The combination is the point. The latex adds bounce and pressure relief; the wool handles moisture and temperature. Owners who want the feel of a latex topper without the rubbery surface, or the climate benefits of wool with real cushioning, end up here.

Skip it if you are simply after a softer bed at a fair price; the Pure Green does that for about a third of the money. Tufted wool also flattens a little over time and does better with regular airing.

The catch. The most expensive here, and tufted wool settles with use.

Compared.

Every comparison

Which fill for which sleeper

Side sleepers on a firm bed: latex, 2 to 3 inches, medium or soft. Hot sleepers: wool or latex, both of which breathe better than memory foam. Anyone who wants a deep, soft, hotel bed and does not mind the upkeep: a featherbed.

Back and stomach sleepers generally need less cushion than they think. Too thick or too soft a layer lets the hips sink and the back bend. For them, a thin wool topper or 2 inches of medium latex is usually enough.

Protect it

Put a fitted mattress protector over any topper. Latex and featherbeds cannot go in a home washer, and a protector is far cheaper to replace than the topper. Check that your fitted sheet's pocket is deep enough for the mattress plus the topper; add the topper's thickness to the mattress depth before you shop for sheets.

Care by fill

Latex: rotate head to foot every few months and keep it out of direct sun, which breaks it down. Wool: air it outdoors on a dry day to refresh the loft. Featherbed: shake it out every morning, as you would a pillow, and have it professionally cleaned rather than washed at home.

Frequently asked questions

Will a topper fix a sagging mattress?

No. A topper follows the shape of the mattress beneath it. It can change how a sound mattress feels, but a dip or sag will come through.

How thick should a topper be?

Two to three inches of latex to change the feel of a bed. About an inch of wool to change its temperature. Featherbeds are thicker but compress under you.

Is latex the same as memory foam?

No. Natural latex comes from rubber tree sap and springs back immediately. Memory foam is synthetic and softens with body heat, which is why it tends to sleep warmer.

Is a featherbed the same as a down comforter?

No. A featherbed goes under you, on the mattress, and is mostly feathers for support and loft. A comforter goes over you and is mostly down for warmth.

Do I need deeper sheets with a topper?

Often, yes. Add the topper's thickness to the mattress depth and buy fitted sheets with a pocket at least that deep.
