Candlesticks and Taper Candles for the Dinner Table

Nothing changes a dinner table as cheaply as candlelight. Good unscented tapers, and something steady and handsome to hold them.

The candlesticks and candles for the table

Overhead light is the enemy of a dinner party. Turn it down, light a few candles at eye level, and the same table, food and people look better at once. Tapers are the classic choice because they put the flame above the plates and below the eyes, where it lights faces without glaring.

Two rules make candlelight work. The candles on a dinner table should be unscented, because scent competes with the food and the wine. And the candlesticks should be heavy and stable, with a cup that holds a standard 7/8 inch taper upright, so nobody spends the evening watching one lean.

Below are two sets of candles, from a fifth-generation American candle maker and a taper specialist, and three kinds of candlestick at three prices: a simple metal holder you can buy by the dozen, mouth-blown glass from Juliska, and crystal and brass from Orrefors.

How we chose

  1. Unscented. Every candle here is unscented. The table should smell of dinner.
  2. Clean, slow burn. Candles that burn about an inch an hour without heavy smoke or drips, so a pair lasts a long dinner.
  3. Stable holders. Candlesticks with enough weight and a cup that grips a standard 7/8 inch taper.
  4. Sold by the maker or Amazon.com. Every pick is sold on Amazon by Amazon.com or the brand itself.

The 5 picks, in detail

Root Candles 12-Count Unscented Taper Candles, 9-Inch, Ivory

Best overallNo. 1

Root Candles 12-Count Unscented Taper Candles, 9-Inch, Ivory

Our take. Hand-dipped, beeswax-enhanced dinner candles from a family maker in Ohio, virtually dripless and in a soft ivory.

Made in
USA (Medina, Ohio)
Keeps for
About 9 hours per candle (maker's figure)
Count
12
Size
9 in tall, 7/8 in diameter
Burn time
About 9 hours (about an inch an hour)
Wax
Wax blend enhanced with beeswax, hand dipped
Wick
Lead-free natural fiber

Root has made candles in Medina, Ohio, for five generations, and its tapers are still hand dipped, built up in as many as 35 layers so the color is solid through the candle. The wax is a blend enhanced with beeswax, and the wicks are lead-free natural fiber, which the maker says gives a clean, soot-free and virtually dripless burn.

Each candle is 9 inches tall and 7/8 inch at the base, the standard size for most candlesticks, and burns about 9 hours. Ivory is warmer than pure white and looks better by candlelight next to white china and linen.

Skip them for very tall holders or a formal table where you want the flame higher; the 12 inch Northern Lights tapers suit that better. For everyday dinners, these are the ones to keep in the drawer.

The catch. Not pure beeswax, and ivory can look slightly yellow in daylight on a white table.

Northern Lights Candles 12" 12pk Tapers, Pure White

The tall tapersNo. 2

Northern Lights Candles 12" 12pk Tapers, Pure White

Our take. Tall, unscented, solid-colored tapers that last a whole evening and then some.

Keeps for
About 12 hours per candle (maker's figure)
Count
12
Height
12 in
Burn time
About 12 hours each (maker's figure)
Wax
Paraffin blend, solid color throughout
Scent
Unscented

Northern Lights' 12 inch tapers are unscented, colored all the way through and rated for about 12 hours each, burning roughly an inch an hour. That is enough for a long dinner with plenty to spare, and a box of twelve covers several evenings with two or three candlesticks.

The height is the reason to choose them. A 12 inch taper in a short holder puts the flame well above a centerpiece and a bottle of wine, which is where candlelight flatters most. Pure white suits every table and every season.

They are a paraffin blend rather than beeswax. Keep them out of drafts; the maker says they are smokeless in a draft-free room, and any taper will drip and smoke near an open window or a heating vent.

The catch. Paraffin, not beeswax, and tall tapers are less stable in a shallow or loose candle cup.

Northern Lights Candles Simplicity Taper Holder, 4", Dark Bronze

The sensible entry pointNo. 3

Northern Lights Candles Simplicity Taper Holder, 4", Dark Bronze

Our take. A small, plain cast-metal taper holder, made in the USA, that looks best bought in a row of four or six.

Made in
USA
Keeps for
Many years; cast metal has little to break
Height
4 in
Material
Cast metal, dark bronze finish
Fits
Standard taper candles

The Simplicity holder is exactly that: a 4 inch cast-metal candlestick with a dark bronze finish that takes any standard taper. The listing gives the country of origin as the United States.

One on its own looks modest. A line of four or six down the middle of a long table, each with a tall white taper, looks deliberate and generous, and at about $10 each that costs less than a single designer candlestick. Short holders also let a tall taper do the work of lifting the light.

Skip them if you want one pair of candlesticks to be the centerpiece. For that, look at the glass or the crystal below.

The catch. Light for a candlestick, so pair it with a taper no taller than 12 inches and keep it off the edge of the table.

Juliska Provence 7" Candlestick Set/2, Chambray

The glass pairNo. 4

Juliska Provence 7" Candlestick Set/2, Chambray

Our take. Mouth-blown bubble glass candlesticks in a soft blue, modeled on the bubbly glass of Provence.

Made in
Thailand
Keeps for
Many years, handled with care
Set
Pair
Height
7 in, 2.5 in wide
Material
Mouth-blown, lead-free glass
Care
Top-rack dishwasher safe, gentle cycle (maker)

Juliska's Provence glass takes its look from the traditional bubbled glassware of southern France. The candlesticks are mouth blown, individually signed and made in Thailand, 7 inches tall, in lead-free glass with small bubbles caught in it. Chambray is a pale, faded blue that works with white china and natural linen.

Glass candlesticks catch and scatter the flame in a way metal cannot, and a colored pair adds a little color to the table without committing it to a theme. Juliska says most of its glass can go on the top rack of a dishwasher on a gentle cycle, which helps with wax.

Skip them if your table is already busy with color or pattern; a clear or metal candlestick will sit more quietly. Being handmade, each one varies slightly.

The catch. Glass is lighter than it looks, so a tall taper makes the pair easier to knock over.

Orrefors Carat 9.5 Inch Brass Candlestick, Pair

If money is no objectNo. 5

Orrefors Carat 9.5 Inch Brass Candlestick, Pair

Our take. Heavy crystal and brass candlesticks by the Swedish glass house Orrefors, designed by Lena Bergström.

Made in
Slovenia (per the listing)
Keeps for
Generations
Set
Pair
Height
9.5 in, 4.5 in wide
Weight
About 5.1 lb for the pair
Material
Crystal with brass cup

Care
Hand wash

Orrefors is one of Sweden's great crystal houses, and Carat is a candlestick line designed by Lena Bergström. This pair combines a faceted crystal stem with a brass candle cup, 9.5 inches tall, and weighs about 5 pounds together, which is what makes them steady on a table.

Crystal and brass together solve the choice between warm metal and sparkling glass. The brass cup catches the flame and warms it; the crystal throws light back onto the table. They suit a formal dinner and look just as good with two plain tapers on a kitchen table.

The listing gives Slovenia as the country of origin. Hand wash only. Skip them if the price is hard to justify for candlesticks; the glass and metal picks above do most of the job.

The catch. About $320 a pair, and brass will darken with time unless you polish it.

Burning tapers well

Trim the wick to about a quarter inch before lighting. Keep candles out of drafts from windows, fans and heating vents, which cause most dripping and smoke. Never leave them burning in an empty room.

If a taper is loose in its cup, warm the base in hot water for a moment and press it in, or use a little candle adhesive. Do not wrap it in foil.

Removing wax

Put glass or metal candlesticks in the freezer for an hour; hardened wax pops off. For wax on a linen tablecloth, freeze the drip, flake it off, then lay a paper towel over the spot and press with a warm iron.

How many to use

Two candles is a minimum for a table of four. For a long table, use one candle for every two or three guests, spread down the center, and mix heights if the holders match in finish.

Frequently asked questions

Should dinner candles be scented?

No. Scent competes with the food and the wine. Use unscented tapers on the dinner table and keep scented candles for other rooms.

What size are standard taper candles?

Most taper candles and candlesticks use a 7/8 inch base. Heights run from about 6 to 15 inches; 9 to 12 inches suits most dinner tables.

How long do taper candles burn?

Roughly an inch an hour. A 9 inch Root taper burns about 9 hours; a 12 inch Northern Lights taper about 12.

Why do my taper candles drip?

Usually drafts, a wick that is too long, or a candle that is leaning. Trim the wick, move the candle out of air currents and make sure it stands straight.

Brass or glass candlesticks?

Brass is warm and traditional and needs occasional polishing. Glass catches the light and is easy to clean. Orrefors' Carat combines both.
