The Best Home Gifts Under $100

Between $50 and $100 is where a gift can be the good version of something, not the adequate one. Five, one each for the bar, the table, the linen closet and the kitchen, and one for the knife drawer.

The good gifts from $50 to $100

Under $50, a gift is usually a small good thing: a tool, a bottle, a candle. Over $100, it starts to feel like an occasion. The band in between is the most useful for birthdays, thank-yous and the people you give to every year, because it buys the best-made version of an everyday object, the one most people never get round to buying for themselves.

Each pick here is used often, made by a company known for that one thing, and sold on Amazon US by Amazon.com or by the maker or its official distributor. None repeats our under-$50 list or the housewarming guide.

They run from about $55 for a Riedel decanter to about $96 for a Shun knife. Choose by where the person spends their time: the bar, the table, the bath or the stove.

How we chose

  1. The good version. An everyday object made better than it needs to be, by a maker with a reputation for it.
  2. Used every week. Nothing that lives in a box between holidays.
  3. Safe without knowing their taste. Neutral colors and plain shapes that fit most kitchens and tables.
  4. Sold straight. Sold on Amazon US by Amazon.com, the maker, or the maker's official distributor.

The 5 picks, in detail

Riedel Veloce Crystal Decanter

Best overallNo. 1

Riedel Veloce Crystal Decanter

Our take. A tall, simple crystal decanter from the Austrian glassmaker, and one that goes in the dishwasher.

Keeps for
Decades, barring breakage
Material
Crystal glass
Capacity
44 oz, per the listing
Height
About 10 in
Care
Dishwasher safe
Designer
Maximilian J. Riedel

Riedel's Veloce decanter was designed by Maximilian J. Riedel for everyday wine rather than ceremony. It is a tall, slim vessel of clear crystal, about 10 inches high, sized for a full 750 milliliter bottle with room to breathe, and the listing gives a capacity of 44 ounces.

Most decanters are a nuisance to wash, which is why they sit in a cupboard. The Veloce is dishwasher safe, so it gets used on a weeknight. For a young red that wants air, or simply to put wine on the table without a label, it does the job well.

Skip it for someone who owns a decanter already, or for a household that drinks mostly white wine and sparkling.

The catch. Tall and slim, so it will not fit every cabinet shelf standing up.

Nambé Butterfly Bowl, 7-Inch

For the tableNo. 2

Nambé Butterfly Bowl, 7-Inch

Our take. A 1967 design in Nambé's polished alloy, with sides that lift like wings, for olives, nuts or a dip.

Keeps for
Generations; the alloy does not chip or break
Material
Nambé alloy, sand cast and hand polished
Size
About 8.75 x 7.5 in, 3.75 in tall
Temperature
Can be chilled or warmed, per the listing
Care
Hand wash, dry immediately
Designer
Richard K. Thomas, 1967

The Butterfly Bowl is one of Nambé's earliest designs, drawn by Richard K. Thomas in 1967 and in production since. It is sand cast and hand polished from Nambé's own metal alloy, which holds temperature well: chilled, it keeps a dip or a salad cool on the table; warmed in the oven, it keeps food warm.

The 7 inch size is small, about 8.75 by 7.5 inches, and suits olives, nuts, a dip or a small salad. It looks like silver without needing silver polish, and it cannot shatter on a stone floor.

It must be washed by hand and dried at once. Skip it for a host whose table is all rustic stoneware; it is a mid-century piece and looks it.

The catch. Hand wash only, and the polished surface shows fingerprints.

IKEUCHI ORGANIC Highly Absorbent & Quick-Dry Organic Cotton Bath Towels, 28 x 53 inch, White, Pack of 2

For the linen closetNo. 3

IKEUCHI ORGANIC Highly Absorbent & Quick-Dry Organic Cotton Bath Towels, 28 x 53 inch, White, Pack of 2

Our take. Two light, fast-drying organic cotton towels woven in Imabari, the Japanese town known for towels.

Made in
Japan
Keeps for
Years of daily washing, by design
Size
28 x 53 in
In the pack
2 bath towels
Fiber
100% GOTS organic cotton
Certification
OEKO-TEX Standard 100, Class 1

IKEUCHI ORGANIC weaves its towels in Imabari, Japan's towel-making center, from GOTS organic cotton. This pair is its lightweight style: not the thick hotel pile most people expect, but a thinner towel that absorbs quickly and dries on the rail in hours rather than staying damp all day.

The maker built them to hold up to years of washing rather than to feel plush in the shop. They are OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class 1 certified, the grade set for baby products, and woven in a facility the maker says runs on wind power. Each comes with a card tracing its cotton.

Skip them for someone who loves a heavy, fluffy towel. These are for the person who prefers linen to terry, or lives somewhere humid where thick towels never dry.

The catch. Thin by design; anyone expecting plush hotel towels will be surprised.

Le Creuset Stoneware Heritage Rectangular Dish, 4 Qt. (12" x 9"), Sea Salt

The one to giveNo. 4

Le Creuset Stoneware Heritage Rectangular Dish, 4 Qt. (12" x 9"), Sea Salt

Our take. Le Creuset's scalloped-handle baking dish, in a pale green that goes from oven to table without apology.

Keeps for
Many years; dense stoneware resists crazing
Size
12 x 9 in, 4 qt
Material
Stoneware, glazed interior, enamel exterior
Safe for
Freezer, microwave, oven, broiler, dishwasher
Color
Sea Salt

The Heritage dish has the scalloped handles that mark Le Creuset's Heritage line. It is dense stoneware with a glazed, nearly nonstick interior and an enamel exterior that resists scratches and stains. The maker says it can go in the freezer, microwave, oven, under the broiler and in the dishwasher.

At 12 by 9 inches and 4 quarts it takes a lasagna, a gratin, a crumble for eight or a tray of roast vegetables. The Sea Salt glaze is a soft grey-green that sits well beside white plates, which is why this is the easiest Le Creuset to give to someone whose kitchen you do not know.

Skip it for a cook who already owns a good 9 by 13 baker; they will not need a second. It is also heavy when full, as good stoneware is.

The catch. Heavy, and slightly smaller than the standard 9 by 13 inch pan many recipes assume.

Shun Classic 6" Utility Knife

Top of the budgetNo. 5

Shun Classic 6" Utility Knife

Our take. A handmade Japanese knife sized between a paring knife and a chef's knife, which ends up used for most small jobs.

Made in
Japan
Keeps for
Decades, with free sharpening from the maker
Blade
6 in, VG-MAX core, 68-layer Damascus cladding
Edge
16 degrees
Handle
D-shaped Pakkawood
Service
Free sharpening and honing

Most cooks own a chef's knife and a paring knife and do everything in between with whichever is closer. A 6 inch utility knife fills that gap: sandwiches, shallots, trimming a chicken breast, slicing a lemon at the bar. Shun's Classic version is handmade in Japan with a VG-MAX steel core clad in 68 layers of Damascus steel and ground to a 16 degree edge.

The D-shaped Pakkawood handle suits left and right hands. Shun offers free sharpening and honing, which makes the gift last well beyond the first edge. It is the lightest way to give someone a proper Japanese knife.

Hard, thin Japanese steel chips if used on bone or frozen food, or put in the dishwasher. Skip it for someone rough with knives; a German knife is the more forgiving gift.

The catch. Hand wash only, and the hard edge chips on bone or frozen food.

Every comparison

Matching the gift to the person

The wine drinker gets the decanter. The person who hosts gets the Nambé bowl. The cook gets the baking dish or the knife, depending on whether they bake or chop. The towels suit almost anyone, and are a good choice when you know little about the kitchen.

Giving a knife

Some people consider a knife an unlucky gift and pay a coin back to make it a purchase. If the recipient is one of them, tape a penny to the box.

What to skip

Gadgets with one use, anything with a monogram for someone you do not know well, and bright colors in cookware unless you have seen the kitchen.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good home gift under $100?

Choose the best-made version of something used every week: a Riedel decanter, a Le Creuset baking dish, IKEUCHI towels or a Shun utility knife all fall between $55 and $96.

Is a knife a good gift?

For a cook, yes. A 6 inch utility knife like the Shun Classic is useful even to someone who owns a chef's knife, and Shun offers free sharpening.

Can the Riedel Veloce decanter go in the dishwasher?

Yes. Riedel lists it as dishwasher safe, which is unusual for a crystal decanter.

Can the Le Creuset Heritage dish go under the broiler?

Yes. Le Creuset rates its stoneware as safe for the freezer, microwave, oven, broiler and dishwasher.

Why are the IKEUCHI towels thin?

They are designed to absorb quickly and dry fast rather than feel plush, and to hold up to years of washing. People who like heavy towels should choose something else.
