The gifts for people who mix drinks at home

The home bartender's first purchases are the tools: tins, a jigger, a mixing glass, a strainer. Our bar cart guide covers those. After that, the drinks improve through the things around the tools. Juice squeezed a minute before it goes in. Ice that is clear and cold enough to dilute slowly. A glass that suits the drink. A few bottles of bitters to turn one recipe into five.

Those make better gifts than another shaker, and they are what this list covers. Every pick is a physical object from a maker with a reputation in the bar trade, and every one is sold on Amazon US by Amazon.com or by the brand.

Prices run from about $18 for a citrus press to about $300 for a glass smoking box. The inexpensive gifts are the ones used most; the smoking box is for someone who likes to make an event of the drink.

How we chose

  1. Improves the drink. Each pick makes a noticeable difference in the glass: fresher juice, better ice, more flavor, the right shape.
  2. Beyond the basic kit. Nothing that repeats the shaker, jigger and mixing glass most home bartenders already own.
  3. Bar-trade makers. Glassware from Schott Zwiesel and Bormioli Rocco, bitters from Fee Brothers, tools designed with working bartenders.
  4. Sold straight. Every pick is sold on Amazon US by Amazon.com or by the maker.

We read makers’ specifications, warranties, care instructions and the sources listed at the end. We do not accept paid placements. How we choose

The 6 picks, in detail

Chef'n FreshForce Lemon Squeezer Citrus Juicer, Yellow

Best overallNo. 1

Chef'n FreshForce Lemon Squeezer Citrus Juicer, Yellow

Our take. A hand press with a geared hinge, so squeezing a dozen limes for a round of drinks does not wear out the hand.

Keeps for
Years; nylon body and stainless steel parts
Mechanism
Dual-gear lever press
Material
Nylon and stainless steel
Fruit
Lemons, limes, key limes
Care
Top-rack dishwasher safe

Fresh citrus is the single biggest difference between a home cocktail and a good one, and bottled juice is the most common shortcut. The FreshForce is a lemon press with a patented dual-gear mechanism that multiplies the squeeze. Chef'n says it gets up to 20 percent more juice than a standard squeezer, with less strain.

It is built of nylon and stainless steel, catches seeds and pulp in its basket, and goes on the top rack of the dishwasher. The yellow model is sized for lemons and limes, which covers most cocktail recipes.

Skip it for someone who already owns a good press. It is too small for oranges and grapefruit, so for a household that makes breakfast juice it is the wrong tool.

The catch. Too small for oranges or grapefruit.

Bormioli Rocco Bartender Novecento 5.25 oz. Nick & Nora Cocktail Glasses, Set of 4, Clear

The glassesNo. 2

Bormioli Rocco Bartender Novecento 5.25 oz. Nick & Nora Cocktail Glasses, Set of 4, Clear

Our take. Four small, vintage-shaped cocktail glasses from Italy, at a price that makes the occasional breakage bearable.

Made in
Italy
Keeps for
Years, barring breakage; stems pulled from one piece
Capacity
5.25 oz
In the set
4 glasses
Construction
Bowl and stem in one piece, laser-cut rim

The Nick & Nora is the small, deep-bowled glass bartenders now use for stirred drinks instead of the wide martini glass: it holds a proper serving without spilling on the walk from bar to chair. Bormioli Rocco's Bartender Novecento version holds 5.25 ounces, the right size for a Manhattan or a martini with room at the top.

The bowl and stem are drawn from one piece of glass, so there is no seam and the stem has a little give. The rim is laser cut thin. They are made in Italy, and for four glasses the price is modest enough to buy two sets.

Skip them for someone who drinks mostly highballs or whiskey on the rocks; the Schott Zwiesel long drink glasses suit them better.

The catch. Thin-rimmed stemware chips more easily than tumblers; keep a spare set in mind.

True Cubes Crystal Clear Ice Cube Maker, 4 Large 2"x2"x2" Ice Cubes

The iceNo. 3

True Cubes Crystal Clear Ice Cube Maker, 4 Large 2"x2"x2" Ice Cubes

Our take. A silicone mold that makes four bar-grade clear cubes from tap water in an ordinary freezer.

Keeps for
Years; the silicone mold is the part to replace
Makes
4 clear cubes, 2 x 2 x 2 in
Freeze time
18 to 22 hours (maker's figure)
Water
Ordinary tap water
Mold
BPA-free silicone

Clear ice is not a garnish. It is denser and free of the trapped air and minerals that make cloudy ice crack and melt fast, so it chills a drink with less dilution and looks like a bar's. The True Cubes mold makes it by freezing water from the top down, the way a lake freezes, which pushes impurities to the bottom.

Fill it with tap water, freeze for 18 to 22 hours, and it gives four 2 inch cubes. America's Test Kitchen named it the best clear ice mold, according to the maker. The mold is BPA-free silicone.

It asks for patience and freezer room. Skip it for someone with a small freezer or a habit of forgetting to refill ice trays.

The catch. Four cubes a day is the ceiling, so a party needs a few days of planning.

Fee Brothers Cocktail Bitters Variety Gift Pack - Classic (6 Pack)

The one to giveNo. 4

Fee Brothers Cocktail Bitters Variety Gift Pack - Classic (6 Pack)

Our take. Six bitters from the family company that has made them in Rochester since the 1860s, enough to change a whole repertoire.

Made in
USA (Rochester, New York)
Keeps for
Years on the shelf; a few dashes at a time
Bottles
6 flavors
Includes
West Indian Orange, Black Walnut, Chocolate, Cherry, Toasted Almond among them
Maker
Fee Brothers, Rochester, New York
Use
1 to 3 dashes per drink

Bitters are the seasoning of a cocktail, a few dashes that decide whether an Old Fashioned tastes of orange or of walnut. Most home bars have one bottle of aromatic bitters and stop there. Fee Brothers' Classic pack adds six, including West Indian Orange, Black Walnut, Chocolate, Cherry and Toasted Almond.

Fee Brothers is a family firm in Rochester, New York, and has been in business for more than 160 years. A bottle lasts a long time at a few dashes per drink, so the set keeps giving for a year or more of experiments.

It is the best all-round gift on this list: useful to a beginner and an enthusiast alike, and nothing to store but six small bottles. Skip it only for someone who does not drink stirred or spirit-forward cocktails.

The catch. Gift-pack lineups change from season to season, so check the six flavors on the listing before buying.

SCHOTT ZWIESEL Basic Bar Selection Long Drink Glass (Set of 6), 11 Ounce

For highballsNo. 5

SCHOTT ZWIESEL Basic Bar Selection Long Drink Glass (Set of 6), 11 Ounce

Our take. A plain, sturdy highball glass designed by the Munich bartender Charles Schumann, made in Germany.

Made in
Germany
Keeps for
Many years; Tritan glass resists chipping and dishwasher clouding
Capacity
About 11 oz
Size
6.1 in tall, 2.8 in across
In the set
6 glasses
Material
Tritan crystal glass, dishwasher safe

The Basic Bar Selection is the barware range Schott Zwiesel made with Charles Schumann, whose Munich bar is one of the best known in Europe. The long drink glass is his highball: a straight, heavy-based cylinder of about 11 ounces, 6.1 inches tall, the shape for a gin and tonic, a Tom Collins or a whisky highball.

It is made in Germany of Schott Zwiesel's Tritan crystal, which is dishwasher safe and resists chipping and clouding far better than ordinary glass. That matters in a set of six that will be used every weekend.

Skip it for a person who drinks only stirred drinks served up. For them, the Nick & Nora glasses are the better gift.

The catch. Plain by design; someone looking for cut or colored glass will find it severe.

Crafthouse by Fortessa Glass Cocktail Smoking Box with Handheld Smoker

If money is no objectNo. 6

Crafthouse by Fortessa Glass Cocktail Smoking Box with Handheld Smoker

Our take. A walnut and glass box that fills with smoke around a finished drink, designed with a champion bartender.

Keeps for
Years; wood chips are the only consumable
Construction
Walnut base, stainless steel frame, glass sides
Size
About 9.5 x 10.8 in
Includes
Handheld smoker and 4 oz wood chips
Designer
Charles Joly for Crafthouse by Fortessa

Crafthouse is the barware line Fortessa makes with Charles Joly, a former world champion bartender. The Smoking Box is a glass-sided case on a walnut base with a stainless steel frame. A drink goes inside, the handheld smoker fills the box with wood smoke, and after a minute the door opens on a glass that tastes and smells of it.

It comes with the handheld smoker and 4 ounces of wood chips, and at about 9.5 by 10.8 inches it holds a pair of rocks glasses or a small plate of cheese or nuts. It is theater as much as flavor, and it suits smoky, spirit-forward drinks like an Old Fashioned.

This is a showpiece for someone who hosts and enjoys the ceremony. Skip it for a person with a small bar or who mostly makes sours and highballs; the effect is lost on them.

The catch. Expensive, bulky and used for a narrow range of drinks.

Compared.

Every comparison

Matching the gift to the drinker

Martini and Manhattan drinkers: the Nick & Nora glasses and the bitters. Highball and gin and tonic people: the Schott Zwiesel glasses and the clear ice. Anyone who makes sours or margaritas: the citrus press, which will be used more than anything else here.

Pairing

The citrus press with a bag of limes, or the ice mold with a bottle of good whisky, makes a complete present. The bitters pack pairs with the Nick & Nora glasses for a gift around $85.

What to skip

Novelty shaker sets with a dozen mismatched tools, whiskey stones, which chill poorly compared with good ice, and pre-made cocktail mixes for someone who already makes drinks from scratch.

Frequently asked questions

What do you buy someone who already has cocktail tools?

The things that improve the drink itself: fresh citrus, clear ice, the right glass and a range of bitters. Those change the result more than another shaker.

Does clear ice really make a better cocktail?

It melts more slowly than cloudy ice because it is denser and has fewer cracks, so it dilutes the drink less. It also looks better. The True Cubes mold makes four 2 inch cubes from tap water.

What is a Nick & Nora glass?

A small, deep, stemmed cocktail glass, now common in bars for stirred drinks. It holds a full serving with less risk of spilling than a wide martini glass.

Are cocktail smokers worth it?

For someone who enjoys smoky, spirit-forward drinks and the ceremony of serving them, yes. For most home bartenders, the bitters and the ice will do more.

What is a good cocktail gift under $25?

The Chef'n FreshForce citrus press or a set of four Bormioli Rocco Nick & Nora glasses.
