How to Set a Christmas Dinner Table: What to Buy

Christmas dinner needs a long cloth, real candles, glasses big enough for the good bottle and serving pieces that can take a roast. Nothing that plays a tune.

The Christmas table, set and served

The Christmas table is the one most people set only once a year, which is why so much of what goes on it is bought in a hurry the week before. The result is a paper runner, a scented candle that fights the food, and a turkey carved onto a cutting board because the platter is too small.

The festive part of a good Christmas table is color and light, not novelty. A red cloth, a dozen tall candles and a bowl of greenery or clementines in the middle do more than any printed reindeer. Everything else should be plain, generous and able to go in the dishwasher at midnight.

The six things below cover the cloth, the light, the glass, the centerpiece, the main platter and the servers. Each is sold on Amazon by Amazon.com or by the maker, and each will be used again in January.

How we chose

  1. Festive, not themed. Red, white, candlelight and greenery. No printed motifs that only work on one day of the year.
  2. Sized for the feast. A cloth long enough for a table with the leaf in, and a platter big enough for the roast with room to carve.
  3. Survives the washing up. Dishwasher safe where possible, and linens that go in the machine on a gentle cycle.
  4. Useful all year. Every piece works at an ordinary dinner in March, so it earns its cupboard space.

The 6 picks, in detail

Juliska Berry & Thread Whitewash 16" Platter

Best overallNo. 1

Juliska Berry & Thread Whitewash 16" Platter

Our take. A 16 inch scalloped stoneware platter with a berry-and-thread rim, handsome enough to carry the roast to the table.

Made in
Portugal
Keeps for
Decades; each piece is signed
Size
16 x 10 x 1.25 in
Material
Lead-free stoneware
Oven
To 500°F; also freezer and microwave safe
Care
Dishwasher, avoid high heat and citrus cleaners

The platter is the piece a Christmas table most often lacks. Juliska's Berry & Thread platter is 16 by 10 inches, handmade in Portugal and individually signed, with a raised thread and a sprinkling of berries at the rim, the house pattern borrowed from Juliska's Bohemian glass.

It is sized for a rib roast, a ham or a bird of moderate size with sides around it, and Juliska rates it oven safe to 500 degrees, so it can warm while the meat rests. It also goes in the dishwasher, though the maker advises avoiding high heat and citrus-based cleaners.

A 20 inch version exists for a large turkey. Skip Berry & Thread if you want perfectly plain white; the relief pattern is the whole point of it.

The catch. Too small for a turkey over about 14 pounds; buy the 20 inch platter for that.

Northern Lights Candles 12" 12pk Tapers, Crimson

The sensible entry pointNo. 2

Northern Lights Candles 12" 12pk Tapers, Crimson

Our take. Twelve tall, unscented crimson tapers, colored all the way through, enough to light a long table for the whole meal.

Keeps for
About 12 hours per candle at the maker's rate of an inch an hour
Size
12 in tapers, pack of 12
Color
Crimson, solid throughout
Scent
Fragrance free
Burn rate
About 1 in per hour (maker's figure)

A long table wants tall candles in number, and a box of twelve 12 inch tapers covers two or three sets of candlesticks with spares. Northern Lights colors the wax through rather than dipping a white core, so the candles stay crimson as they burn down.

They are fragrance free, which matters at dinner: scent competes with the food and the wine. The maker says straight sides give them 30 percent more wax than a standard taper and that they burn about an inch an hour, so a 12 inch candle outlasts a long Christmas dinner and the washing up.

Light them before guests sit down and snuff them when the table is cleared. Skip them for a household with small children at the table; a low row of votives is safer.

The catch. Red wax on a white cloth is the classic Christmas stain. Use bobeches or trim drips before they fall.

Solino Home Cotton Linen Tablecloth Red, Cotton Linen Hemstitch 58 x 120 in

The clothNo. 3

Solino Home Cotton Linen Tablecloth Red, Cotton Linen Hemstitch 58 x 120 in

Our take. A long red cotton and linen cloth with a hemstitched border, sized for a table that seats eight to ten.

Keeps for
Years of holiday washing
Size
58 x 120 in
Fiber
75% cotton, 25% linen
Edge
Hemstitched
Care
Machine wash gentle, tumble dry low, warm iron

A red cloth does most of the work of a Christmas table on its own. This one is 75 percent cotton and 25 percent linen, which gives it linen's texture and drape with less wrinkling than pure linen, finished with a hemstitched border.

At 58 by 120 inches it is long enough for a table of about 96 inches with a drop at each end, which is where most dining tables land once the leaf is in. Measure first: add 16 to 24 inches to the table's length and width for a proper overhang.

It goes in the machine on a gentle cycle and irons warm. Skip it if your table is round or short; Solino sells the same cloth in other sizes, and a smaller table looks swamped by a 120 inch cloth.

The catch. Red can shed dye in the first washes. Wash it alone before it meets the white napkins.

SCHOTT ZWIESEL Classico Bordeaux Red Wine Glass (Set of 6)

The glassNo. 4

SCHOTT ZWIESEL Classico Bordeaux Red Wine Glass (Set of 6)

Our take. A big, round-bowled red wine glass in dishwasher-safe crystal, made for the good bottle opened at Christmas.

Made in
Germany
Keeps for
Years; Tritan crystal is made to survive the dishwasher
Capacity
About 22 oz
Height
About 9.8 in
Material
Tritan crystal
Care
Dishwasher safe

Christmas dinner is when the serious red comes out, and it deserves more room than an everyday glass allows. The Classico Bordeaux holds about 22 ounces, stands about 9.8 inches tall and has a wide round bowl that gives a big wine space to open up.

Schott Zwiesel makes it in Germany from its Tritan crystal, which the maker designed to resist breakage and clouding in the dishwasher. That matters at the end of a long dinner, when nobody wants to hand wash twelve stems.

Six glasses sets a table of six; buy two sets for a larger party. Skip it if your cupboard is short; at nearly ten inches it will not fit under every shelf.

The catch. Tall glasses are easy to knock over across a crowded table; set them to the upper right of each plate.

Lenox French Perle White Stoneware Centerpiece Serving Bowl

The centerpieceNo. 5

Lenox French Perle White Stoneware Centerpiece Serving Bowl

Our take. A scalloped white stoneware bowl that holds clementines, greenery or pine cones in the middle of the table, then a salad in July.

Keeps for
Decades, with Lenox's breakage replacement program
Size
10.5 in across
Capacity
118 oz
Material
Stoneware, hand-applied tea stain rim
Care
Dishwasher and microwave safe
Program
Lifetime breakage replacement (Lenox)

The best Christmas centerpiece is low enough to talk over and simple enough to fill from the garden or the fruit bowl. This Lenox bowl is 10.5 inches across with a 118 ounce capacity and a scalloped rim finished by hand in a soft tea stain.

Filled with clementines and a few sprigs of fir or holly, it looks festive without looking bought for the day. After the holiday it becomes a serving bowl for salad or potatoes, and it is dishwasher and microwave safe.

Lenox backs French Perle with a lifetime breakage replacement program, which is unusual and worth registering for. Skip it if your table is narrow; at 10.5 inches it takes real space between the candles.

The catch. The tea-stained rim reads as rustic; buyers who want crisp white porcelain will find it too country.

Mepra Due Serving Set, Stainless Steel Finish

The serversNo. 6

Mepra Due Serving Set, Stainless Steel Finish

Our take. A proper serving fork and spoon in heavy Italian 18/10 steel, for the platter and the vegetable bowls.

Made in
Italy
Keeps for
Decades; solid 18/10 stainless steel
Pieces
Serving fork, serving spoon
Steel
18/10 stainless
Finish
Stainless steel
Care
Dishwasher safe

Most households serve Christmas dinner with a mix of kitchen spoons and the carving fork. A matched serving fork and spoon looks better on the table and is easier to pass. Mepra's Due set is 18/10 stainless steel, made in Italy by a family firm known for modern flatware.

Due is a slim, modern pattern, plain enough to sit beside most flatware without clashing. It is fully dishwasher safe, and the maker says the steel resists rust, fading and tarnishing, so it comes out of the holiday load looking the same.

The set is two pieces. For a large dinner with several dishes, buy two sets, or add a pie server and a ladle. Skip it if your flatware is ornate and traditional; a plainer pattern beside it can look unfinished.

The catch. Expensive for two pieces; the price reflects the steel and the maker, not a lot of metal.

Compared.

Every comparison

Setting it

Cloth first, then the centerpiece down the middle, then candles either side of it. Keep everything in the middle below eye level so people can see each other across the table.

Put the platter and bowls on a sideboard or kitchen counter if the table is full. A crowded Christmas table with no room for elbows is worse than a bare one.

Candles and cloth

Trim tapers to fit the holders and stand them straight. If red wax drips on the cloth, let it harden, lift what you can, then iron through brown paper to draw the rest out before washing.

What to skip

Scented candles at the table, plastic crackers in bulk, novelty plates you will use once a year and centerpieces tall enough to hide the person opposite.

Frequently asked questions

What size tablecloth do I need for Christmas dinner?

Measure the table with the leaf in and add 16 to 24 inches to both length and width for an 8 to 12 inch drop on each side. A 58 by 120 inch cloth fits a table about 96 inches long.

What is a good Christmas centerpiece that is not tacky?

A low bowl filled with clementines, pine cones or cut fir and holly, with tall candles either side. It is cheap to refill and nobody has to look around it.

Should candles on the dinner table be scented?

No. Scent competes with the food and wine. Use unscented tapers or votives.

What size platter do I need for a turkey?

About 16 inches for a small bird or a roast, 18 to 20 inches for a turkey of 14 pounds or more.

Do I need special glasses for Christmas dinner?

No, but a large-bowled red wine glass flatters the kind of bottle people open at Christmas. Dishwasher-safe crystal makes the end of the night easier.
