The good gifts under $50

A modest budget pushes most people toward the gift aisle: a candle in a novelty jar, a set of coasters, a gadget that slices avocados. They are bought in a minute and put away just as fast. Fifty dollars will buy something much better than that, if you stay with the plain classics.

Each gift below is the best-known version of an everyday object, made by a company that has done it for decades. A French paring knife, a French press, a cast iron skillet, a Bundt pan, a salt crock and a pie dish. None is exciting in the box, and all of them get used for years.

They run from about $25 to just under $50, and each is sold on Amazon by Amazon.com, so they are easy to send and easy to exchange.

How we chose

  1. Under $50 at listing price. Every pick was under $50 on Amazon when we checked, before any holiday discount.
  2. A known classic. The standard version of its object, from a maker with a long record: Opinel, Bodum, Lodge, Nordic Ware, Le Creuset, Emile Henry.
  3. Used weekly. No single-use gadgets. Each gift has a place in the kitchen or on the table in an ordinary week.
  4. Safe for any taste. Neutral colors and plain forms, so the gift works for someone whose kitchen you have never seen.

We read makers’ specifications, warranties, care instructions and the sources listed at the end. We do not accept paid placements. How we choose

The 6 picks, in detail

Nordic Ware Anniversary Bundt, 15 Cup, Silver

Best overallNo. 1

Nordic Ware Anniversary Bundt, 15 Cup, Silver

Our take. The original Bundt pan from the company that invented it, made in the USA and large enough for a holiday cake.

Made in
USA
Keeps for
Decades; cast aluminum does not warp
Capacity
15 cups
Size
About 10.8 in across, 4.5 in tall
Material
Cast aluminum
Finish
Silicone nonstick, free of PFAS and PTFE (maker)

Nordic Ware created the Bundt pan in Minneapolis in 1950 and still owns the name. The Anniversary pan is the original shape, a fluted ring with sharp, deep folds, cast from aluminum so the edges bake crisp and the cake releases in clean detail.

It holds 15 cups, larger than the standard 10 or 12 cup pan, so it takes a pound cake or a holiday cake without overflowing. The pan is about 10.8 inches across and 4.5 inches tall, with a nonstick finish the maker says is free of PFAS and PTFE, and it is made in America.

Butter and flour it carefully all the same; every Bundt sticks in the folds if you skip it. Skip this gift for someone who never bakes, or who already has one of these on a shelf.

The catch. Recipes written for a 10 or 12 cup pan will not fill it; scale up by about half.

Opinel No. 102 Paring Knives 2 Piece Set, Carbon Steel

The sensible entry pointNo. 2

Opinel No. 102 Paring Knives 2 Piece Set, Carbon Steel

Our take. Two French paring knives with carbon steel blades and beech handles, the ones cooks keep in a drawer for everything small.

Made in
France
Keeps for
Many years; carbon steel sharpens easily
Blade
Carbon steel, 3 3/4 in
Overall
7 1/2 in
Handle
Stabilized beechwood
Set
2 knives

Opinel has made knives in the French Alps since 1890, and its paring knives are the kitchen version of the folding knife it is famous for. The No. 102 has a 3 3/4 inch carbon steel blade on a 7 1/2 inch knife, with a handle of sustainably harvested, stabilized beechwood.

Carbon steel takes a very sharp edge and is easy to bring back on a honing rod. It is the right steel for peeling, trimming and cutting garlic and shallots, and two knives means one can live at the table for cheese or fruit.

Carbon steel darkens with use and will rust if left wet. Dry it after washing and never put it in the dishwasher. Skip it for someone who wants stainless; Opinel makes the same knife in stainless steel as the No. 112.

The catch. Carbon steel stains and rusts if neglected. Hand wash and dry at once.

Bodum 34oz Chambord French Press Coffee Maker, Polished Stainless Steel

For the morningNo. 3

Bodum 34oz Chambord French Press Coffee Maker, Polished Stainless Steel

Our take. The classic eight-cup French press in borosilicate glass and polished steel, the one that looks right on a breakfast table.

Made in
Portugal
Keeps for
Many years; the glass beaker is replaceable
Capacity
34 oz
Beaker
High-heat borosilicate glass
Frame
Polished stainless steel
Use
Not for stovetop

The Chambord is the French press most people picture: a glass beaker held in a polished stainless steel frame, with a plunger that pushes a steel mesh filter through the grounds. This size holds 34 ounces, enough for three or four mugs, and it is made in Portugal.

It makes full-bodied coffee with nothing more than hot water and a four-minute wait, and it can go to the table as a pot. It is a good gift for someone who makes coffee for more than one person, or who has a pod machine and misses real coffee.

The beaker is high-heat borosilicate glass, but it is still glass. It is not for the stovetop. Skip it for someone who drinks one cup at a time on the way out the door.

The catch. French press coffee has some sediment, and the glass can break if knocked against a sink.

Lodge Pre-Seasoned Cast Iron Skillet, 10.25 Inches

The best valueNo. 4

Lodge Pre-Seasoned Cast Iron Skillet, 10.25 Inches

Our take. The American cast iron skillet, pre-seasoned and ready to use, at a price that makes it the easiest good gift on this list.

Made in
USA
Keeps for
Generations; cast iron gets better with use
Size
10.25 in
Material
Cast iron, pre-seasoned
Use
Stovetop, oven, grill or campfire
Care
Hand wash, dry, oil lightly

Lodge has made cast iron cookware in South Pittsburg, Tennessee since 1896, and its 10.25 inch skillet is the pan most American cooks learn on. It arrives pre-seasoned, so it can go straight onto the stove, and the seasoning improves every time it is used.

Cast iron holds heat better than almost anything in the kitchen, which is why it sears a steak, crisps cornbread and fries an egg so well. It goes from stovetop to oven, and it will outlive the person who receives it. The 10.25 inch size suits two to three people without being too heavy to lift one-handed.

It asks a little care: wash, dry at once and wipe with a film of oil. Skip it for someone who wants everything in the dishwasher, or who already owns one; a second size is only useful to a keen cook.

The catch. Heavy, and the short handle gets as hot as the pan. A handle cover is a sensible add-on.

Le Creuset Stoneware Salt Crock, 10 oz., White

For the stoveNo. 5

Le Creuset Stoneware Salt Crock, 10 oz., White

Our take. An open stoneware crock that keeps salt by the stove, where a cook can take a pinch without a lid or a shaker.

Keeps for
Decades
Capacity
10 oz
Material
Enameled stoneware
Finish
White
Care
Dishwasher safe

Cooks salt by the pinch, and a salt crock is the easiest way to keep a pinch within reach. Le Creuset's holds 10 ounces, with a hooded opening that keeps out spatter while leaving room for fingers.

It is dense, enameled stoneware that the maker says resists moisture, staining and scratching, and it goes in the dishwasher. In white it sits beside any cookware without making a statement.

Pair it with a box of flaky salt and it becomes a generous gift. Skip it for someone short on counter space, or who salts from the shaker and has no plans to change.

The catch. In a humid kitchen, fine salt can clump in an open crock. Flaky or coarse salt keeps better.

Emile Henry Made In France 9 Inch Pie Dish, White

Top of the budgetNo. 6

Emile Henry Made In France 9 Inch Pie Dish, White

Our take. A fluted French clay pie dish that bakes an even crust and goes from freezer to oven to table.

Made in
France
Keeps for
Decades, barring a fall on a hard floor
Size
9 in
Material
High-fired Burgundy clay (HR ceramic)
Oven
To 520°F; freezer to oven
Care
Dishwasher, microwave and broiler safe

Emile Henry has fired ceramics in Burgundy since 1850. Its 9 inch pie dish is made from high-fired Burgundy clay in the maker's HR, high resistance, ceramic, with fluted sides that make a neat crimped crust without much skill.

Clay browns the bottom crust evenly and keeps a pie warm at the table. The maker says it can go straight from the freezer or refrigerator into a hot oven, up to 520°F, which glass and most stoneware cannot, and it is safe under the broiler, in the microwave and in the dishwasher.

It is heavier than a metal pie tin. Skip it for someone who bakes one pie a year; for anyone who makes quiche or pie often, it is the one they will keep.

The catch. Right at $50, and the price moves; it sometimes goes just over.

Compared.

Every comparison

Making a small gift feel generous

Add the thing that goes with it: a bag of good coffee with the French press, a cornbread recipe with the skillet, flaky salt with the crock, a handwritten recipe with the Bundt or the pie dish.

Who gets what

For a coworker or a neighbor, the paring knives or the skillet. For someone who bakes, the Bundt or the pie dish. For someone who has just moved, the French press.

What to skip

Novelty mugs, gadgets that do one thing, gift sets padded with filler, and anything scented for someone whose taste you do not know.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good gift under $50 for someone who cooks?

A proper tool they would not buy themselves: a pair of Opinel paring knives, a Lodge cast iron skillet or a French clay pie dish.

What is a good coworker gift under $50?

Something neutral and useful, such as a French press with a bag of coffee or a cast iron skillet.

Is a Bundt pan a good gift?

For anyone who bakes, yes. Nordic Ware's cast aluminum Anniversary pan is the original and lasts for decades.

Are Opinel kitchen knives good?

Yes, for the price. They are simple French knives with carbon or stainless blades and wooden handles, made in the French Alps.

Can I put a French press in the dishwasher?

Follow the maker's instructions for your model. Bodum's listing for the Chambord asks for washing in warm, soapy water before first use and says it is not for the stovetop.
