Hosting a Holiday Cocktail Party for 12 to 20

Twenty guests is too many for a host to shake drinks to order. The answer is a batch, a lot of ice, and enough glasses that nobody washes one mid-party.

What to own to host a cocktail party for twenty

A cocktail party for four is a performance at the bar cart. For twenty, it is logistics. A host who mixes each drink by hand spends the evening with a shaker and never talks to anyone. The parties that feel easy run on one or two batched drinks, poured by the guests themselves, from a vessel that sits on a side table with the glasses and the ice beside it.

That leaves a short list of things to own. Something to hold the batch. Somewhere to keep a great deal of ice. Glasses in a quantity most households do not have. Small napkins, because every drink leaves a ring, and a narrow platter for the bites that go round.

The six pieces below are chosen for a party of twelve to twenty. None is a novelty, and all of them are useful at smaller gatherings. The punch bowl, which does the same job with more ceremony, has its own guide.

How we chose

  1. Self-service. Pieces that let guests pour for themselves, so the host is a host and not a bartender.
  2. Scale. Capacity for twenty: gallons of drink, pounds of ice, glasses by the dozen.
  3. Steady on a crowded table. Heavy bases, wide footprints and handles, because people will bump into everything.
  4. Easy cleanup. Glass and ceramic that go in the dishwasher, and linen that goes in the machine.

We read makers’ specifications, warranties, care instructions and the sources listed at the end. We do not accept paid placements. How we choose

The 6 picks, in detail

Libbey 918CD Heavy Base Double Old Fashioned Glasses, Set of 12

Best overallNo. 1

Libbey 918CD Heavy Base Double Old Fashioned Glasses, Set of 12

Our take. Twelve 13.5 ounce rocks glasses with heavy bases, at under $4 a glass, for every drink on the menu.

Keeps for
Years of parties; heavy restaurant glass

One glass shape is enough for a big cocktail party, and the double old fashioned is the one. It takes a spritz over ice, a batched punch, a bourbon on a large cube, a soda for the driver. Buying one shape in quantity also means guests can find a clean glass without asking which one is for what.

Libbey's 918CD is a heavy-based 13.5 ounce tumbler with a fine rim, sold in twelves and rated dishwasher safe. The weight is useful in a crowd: a glass with a thick bottom is hard to knock over and feels good in the hand.

For twenty guests, buy two sets. People set glasses down and take a new one, and twenty-four is the least you want for a party of twenty.

The catch. A heavy base means a heavy stack; twenty-four of these fill a lot of cupboard.

Anchor Hocking Heritage Hill Glass Drink Dispenser, 2 Gallon

The batchNo. 2

Anchor Hocking Heritage Hill Glass Drink Dispenser, 2 Gallon

Our take. A thick 2 gallon glass jar with a spigot, which holds enough of a batched drink for the first hour of a party.

Made in
USA (Ohio)
Keeps for
Decades for the glass; the spigot is the part that may need replacing
Capacity
2 gallons
Includes
Jar, glass lid, spigot
Material
Lead-free glass
Mouth
Wide, takes a block of ice

Anchor Hocking has made glass in Ohio since 1905, and the Heritage Hill jar is a heavy, plain, wide-mouthed piece with a glass lid and a spigot near the bottom. Two gallons is 256 ounces, enough for about fifty 4 ounce drinks before ice. The glass is thick and weighted enough to stay put when someone opens the tap with one hand.

The wide mouth matters. It takes a large block of ice, which melts far slower than cubes and dilutes the batch less, and it lets a host top up the drink or add citrus wheels without a funnel. Clear glass shows off whatever is inside, which does most of the decorating.

It is the right vessel for a spritz, a punch-style drink or a batched long drink topped up with soda in the glass. Skip it for stirred, spirit-forward drinks like a Manhattan, which are better poured from a pitcher kept in the refrigerator.

The catch. The glass lid does not seal, and the jar is heavy to lift once full; fill it where it will stand.

Viski Hammered Metal Ice Bucket, Stainless Steel Beverage Tub With Handles, 5.35 Gallons, Silver

The iceNo. 3

Viski Hammered Metal Ice Bucket, Stainless Steel Beverage Tub With Handles, 5.35 Gallons, Silver

Our take. A 5.35 gallon hammered steel tub that holds the bag of ice a party for twenty actually uses.

Keeps for
Many years; stainless steel with riveted handles
Capacity
5.35 gallons
Material
Stainless steel, hammered finish
Handles
Two side handles
Use
Ice, wine, beer, sparkling water
Seller
True Brands, Viski's parent company

Every household ice bucket is too small for a party. A tabletop bucket holds three or four pounds; a party of twenty goes through far more than that between the drinks, the dispenser and the bottles of wine and sparkling water that need to stay cold. The tub solves it by holding a whole bag at once.

Viski's tub is stainless steel with a hammered finish and two side handles, and it holds 5.35 gallons. That is room for a scoop's worth of cocktail ice at one end and a row of bottles buried in ice and water at the other. The hammered surface looks deliberate on a sideboard, which a cooler never does.

It is single-walled, so it sweats. Set it on a tray or a folded towel, not straight on wood, and keep a second bag in the freezer for the refill.

The catch. Single-wall steel, so condensation runs down the outside; it needs a tray underneath.

Solino Home 100% Pure Linen Cocktail Napkins White, 6 x 6 in, Set of 12

The napkinsNo. 4

Solino Home 100% Pure Linen Cocktail Napkins White, 6 x 6 in, Set of 12

Our take. Twelve hemstitched linen cocktail napkins that go round a glass, catch a drip and go back in the wash.

Keeps for
Years; linen softens and improves with washing
Count
12 napkins
Size
6 x 6 in
Material
100% European flax linen
Certification
OEKO-TEX Standard 100
Care
Machine wash; low iron if wanted

A cocktail napkin is handed out with the drink, wrapped around the glass, and then used for a canapé. Paper ones turn to pulp against a cold glass in ten minutes. Linen ones absorb the condensation and still look like napkins at the end of the night.

Solino Home's are 100 percent European flax linen, 6 inches square, with a classic hemstitch border, and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified. They are machine washable and need only a light iron, or none, since a little rumple is normal for linen.

For a party of twenty, buy two or three sets; guests set one down and take another. White is the practical choice, because it can be bleached.

The catch. Linen wrinkles, and red wine or cranberry on white linen needs attention the same night.

Emile Henry Madeleine Collection Ceramic Serving Platter, 12.4" x 5.9", Clay

The small bitesNo. 5

Emile Henry Madeleine Collection Ceramic Serving Platter, 12.4" x 5.9", Clay

Our take. A long, narrow French ceramic platter, the right shape for passing a row of bites through a crowd.

Made in
France
Keeps for
Decades; covered by a 10 year warranty against defects
Size
12.4 x 5.9 in
Material
Ceramic
Care
Dishwasher safe
Warranty
10 years against manufacturing defects

At a standing party, food goes round rather than sitting on a table, and the platter to carry it is long and narrow. Twelve inches by six holds a single or double row of bites that a guest can reach without leaning over the whole dish, and it fits in one hand between people.

Emile Henry has made ceramics in Burgundy since 1850, and its Madeleine pieces are made in France. The maker rates them as dishwasher safe, resistant to thermal shock, and covered by a 10 year warranty against manufacturing defects. That thermal rating means warm bites can go from a low oven onto the platter.

Buy two, so one can be refilled in the kitchen while the other is out. Skip it if your food is set out as a buffet; a large round platter suits that better.

The catch. Narrow by design, so it will not hold a cheese course or anything that needs a knife.

SCHOTT ZWIESEL Basic Bar Whiskey Glass (Set of 6), 12 Ounce

If money is no objectNo. 6

SCHOTT ZWIESEL Basic Bar Whiskey Glass (Set of 6), 12 Ounce

Our take. Bartender-designed German crystal tumblers with a thick base, sturdy enough for a party and fine enough to notice.

Made in
Germany
Keeps for
Many years; Tritan crystal made for bar use
Count
6 glasses
Capacity
About 12 oz
Size
3.6 in tall, 3.5 in across
Material
Tritan crystal

Schott Zwiesel's Basic Bar line was designed with the Munich bartender Charles Schumann, and the whiskey glass is the everyday tumbler of the set: straight sides, an extra thick base, about 12 ounces, 3.6 inches tall. It is made in Germany from Tritan crystal, which the maker describes as strong enough for heavy use and the dishwasher.

The difference from the Libbey glasses is in the hand. Crystal is clearer and rings when touched, and a thin rim makes a drink taste better, even if nobody at the party could say why.

Twenty guests means four sets, which is over $300 of glasses. Buy these for a party of twelve, or buy one set for the host's own bar and the Libbeys for the crowd.

The catch. At about $13.50 a glass, a party breakage rate hurts more than it does with restaurant glass.

Compared.

Every comparison

How much to make

The usual planning figure is two drinks per guest in the first hour and one an hour after that. For twenty guests over three hours, that is about eighty drinks, split between the batch, wine and something without alcohol.

Ice is the thing hosts run short of. Plan on at least a pound and a half per guest for drinks and chilling bottles, which for twenty is thirty pounds, or three large bags.

Batching the drink

Mix the batch the afternoon before, without anything fizzy, and keep it in the refrigerator. Stirred or shaken drinks get their water from ice, so bartenders add about a fifth of the volume in water when batching. Add sparkling wine or soda to each glass as it is poured, not to the jar.

Set the dispenser, the glasses, the tub of ice and a scoop together in one place, away from the front door, so the line does not form in the hall.

What to skip

A full bar with a dozen bottles; offer two drinks and do them well. Paper cocktail napkins against cold glasses. Plastic cups, except outdoors.

Frequently asked questions

How many glasses do I need for a party of 20?

At least twenty-four, and thirty if there is space. Guests set glasses down and take fresh ones.

How much ice for a cocktail party?

About a pound and a half per guest, more if you are chilling wine and water in the same tub. Buy it the afternoon of the party.

Is a drink dispenser or a pitcher better?

A dispenser for self-service long drinks and punches. A pitcher from the refrigerator for stirred, spirit-forward drinks that should not sit on ice.

What size are cocktail napkins?

Usually 5 to 6 inches square, small enough to wrap around a glass.

Which glass works for every cocktail?

A double old fashioned of about 12 to 14 ounces. It takes drinks over ice, highballs in a pinch and spirits neat.
