Napkin Rings and Place Card Holders for a Dinner Party

The last five minutes of setting a table are the ones guests notice. A napkin held in a ring and a name written by hand say the evening was planned for them.

The napkin rings and place cards that finish a dinner table

Napkin rings and place cards are the smallest objects on a dinner table and the ones that do the most for the least money. A folded cloth napkin in a brass ring turns a plain place setting into a laid one. A card with a guest's name, written in ink, answers the awkward question of where to sit and lets the host put the talkers next to the listeners.

Neither needs to be elaborate. The best napkin rings are simple enough to use on a Tuesday and hold a napkin firmly without crushing it. The best place cards are plain, heavy paper with room for a name, standing on their own or in a small holder that doubles as a cheese marker when the dinner is over.

The six picks below cover metal, jute and glass napkin rings, pewter card holders and a box of folded cards. Each is sold on Amazon by Amazon.com or by the maker itself.

How we chose

  1. Holds a real napkin. Rings wide enough for a 20 inch cloth napkin, folded or rolled, without crushing it flat.
  2. Works beyond one holiday. No pumpkins or snowmen. Every pick suits a dinner in any month.
  3. Plain enough to write on. Place cards with space for a name in handwriting, not a printed design competing with it.
  4. Easy to store. Small, sturdy and not fragile, so they live in a drawer between dinners.

We read makers’ specifications, warranties, care instructions and the sources listed at the end. We do not accept paid placements. How we choose

The 6 picks, in detail

SARO LIFESTYLE Classic Brass Napkin Rings (Set of 4)

Best overallNo. 1

SARO LIFESTYLE Classic Brass Napkin Rings (Set of 4)

Our take. Plain, curved rings of solid brass, heavy enough to feel like something and simple enough to use every night.

Keeps for
Decades; solid brass only gets better with age
Pieces
4
Material
100% brass, brushed finish
Shape
Smooth, rounded band
Care
Wipe with a dry cloth; polish if you want the shine back

These are what most people picture when they think of a good napkin ring: a smooth, rounded band in solid brass with a soft brushed finish. No pattern, no motif, just weight and warmth, which is why they work on every kind of table.

Solid brass is the point. It feels substantial in the hand, it holds a thick linen napkin firmly, and over the years it darkens slightly to a softer gold unless you polish it. Either look is correct.

Four to a set. Skip them if your table is all silver and stainless; the beaded silver rings above are the better match there.

The catch. Brass darkens over time and needs polish if you want it bright.

SARO LIFESTYLE Beaded Edge Metal Napkin Rings (Set of 4), Silver

The sensible entry point, about $25No. 2

SARO LIFESTYLE Beaded Edge Metal Napkin Rings (Set of 4), Silver

Our take. Four simple metal rings with a beaded edge, the kind of napkin ring that suits both a weekday and a birthday.

Keeps for
Years; there is nothing to break
Pieces
4
Material
Brass, silver finish
Detail
Beaded, scalloped rim
Care
Wipe with a soft dry cloth

A beaded edge is one of the oldest details on silver and flatware, and it is what makes these rings look more expensive than they are. They are made of brass with a silver finish, with a slightly irregular, handmade look.

Silver goes with almost any table, from white porcelain to stoneware, and suits stainless flatware better than gold does. Four to a set, so a table of eight needs two.

Wipe them with a dry cloth and put them away dry. Skip them if your flatware and candlesticks are brass or gold; the Saro brass rings below will match better.

The catch. Finish and shape vary slightly from ring to ring, and four is only half a dinner party.

Juliska Mystic Knot Napkin Ring Set/4 - Taupe

The relaxed oneNo. 3

Juliska Mystic Knot Napkin Ring Set/4 - Taupe

Our take. Hand-knotted jute rings that bring a bit of texture to a linen table, better for a long lunch outdoors than a formal dinner.

Keeps for
A few years of regular use; jute frays in time
Pieces
4
Material
Jute fiber, hand-knotted
Color
Taupe
Care
Spot clean with a damp cloth; do not pull loose ends

Juliska, the Connecticut tabletop house founded in 2001, makes these by hand from braided jute, tied in a knot borrowed from sailing. They look best with washed linen napkins and stoneware, on a table where metal would feel too dressed up.

Taupe is the most versatile of the colors: it disappears against natural linen and adds warmth to white. Jute gives a firm hold on a thick napkin.

Spot clean only. Loose ends can be tucked back or trimmed and knotted, as Juliska advises, but do not pull on them. Skip them for a formal dinner, or for a household where napkins get wine on them regularly and rings get washed.

The catch. Fiber cannot be washed, so a wine spill is permanent.

Juliska Provence Napkin Ring Set/4 - Basil

If money is no objectNo. 4

Juliska Provence Napkin Ring Set/4 - Basil

Our take. Green bubble glass bangles for napkins, the one detail on this list that guests will pick up and ask about.

Keeps for
Decades, unless dropped on stone
Pieces
4
Material
Bubble glass
Color
Basil green
Size
2.5 x 2.5 x 1.25 in
Care
Dishwasher safe, warm gentle cycle (maker's statement)

Juliska's Provence rings are glass, in the style of the bubbled glassware made in the south of France, here in a soft basil green. On a white cloth with candlelight behind them they glow. They are 2.5 inches across and 1.25 inches tall.

Unlike most decorative napkin rings, they can be washed properly: Juliska rates them dishwasher safe on a warm, gentle cycle. They come gift boxed, which makes a set an easy wedding or hostess present.

At nearly $30 a ring they are an extravagance, and glass can chip if a ring rolls off the table onto a hard floor. Skip them if you set the table with children.

The catch. Expensive per ring, and glass can chip on a hard floor.

Vagabond House Pewter Song Bird Place Card Holder

The place card holderNo. 5

Vagabond House Pewter Song Bird Place Card Holder

Our take. A small cast pewter songbird that holds a name card at dinner and marks the cheeses afterward.

Keeps for
Generations; solid pewter does not wear out
Size
1.75 in wide, 2 in tall
Material
Solid lead-free pewter
Also used as
Cheese markers or buffet labels
Care
Dust, or hand wash with mild soap

Vagabond House casts its table pieces in solid, lead-free pewter, and this songbird is one of its smallest. It is 1.75 inches wide and 2 inches tall, with a slot that holds a place card upright beside the glasses.

The second life is what makes it worth buying. After dinner, the same holders go on the cheese board with the name of each cheese, or along a buffet to label dishes. Pewter has a soft, dark shine that sits well with both silver and brass.

Sold one at a time, so a table of eight is a real outlay. Dust them or wash them by hand with mild soap. Skip them if you only seat guests once a year; a folded card on its own does the job.

The catch. Sold individually, so a full table costs more than the napkin rings.

Caspari Golden Rule Place Cards, 30 Included

The cardsNo. 6

Caspari Golden Rule Place Cards, 30 Included

Our take. Folded place cards with a fine gold rule border and plenty of blank space for a name written by hand.

Keeps for
One use each; the box lasts several dinners
Count
30
Size
About 3.5 x 2.25 in
Style
Classic fold, blank inside for handwriting
Border
Gold rule

Caspari is best known for paper cocktail napkins and guest towels, and designs its place cards to coordinate with them. The Golden Rule design is a folded card of heavy stock with a thin gold line around the edge and nothing else, which leaves the name as the only thing to read.

Each card is about 3.5 by 2.25 inches, and a box holds 30, enough for three or four dinner parties. The fold lets them stand on their own, or they slip into a holder like the pewter songbird above.

Write the names in ink with a fine pen and let them dry before standing them up. Skip them if your table has a strong color scheme; Caspari makes the same format in colors and patterns.

The catch. Some inks smudge on heavy card; test your pen on the back of one first.

How to seat a table

Hosts sit at the ends or in the middle of each long side, where they can reach the kitchen and see everyone. Separate couples, and put the quiet guest next to the most generous talker. Write first names only for friends; first and last for a larger or more formal dinner.

Place each card above the plate, centered, or on the napkin itself. In a holder, stand it just above the dessert spoon or to the right of the glasses.

Folding a napkin for a ring

The simplest fold is the best. Fold the napkin in half, then in half again, then roll it loosely from one corner and slide the ring to the middle. For a 20 inch linen napkin, a ring about 1.75 to 2 inches across holds it without crushing.

Care by material

Brass and silver-finish metal: wipe dry, polish brass if you want it bright. Pewter: hand wash with mild soap and dry. Glass: follow the maker's washing instructions. Jute and rattan: spot clean only, and keep them away from wine.

Frequently asked questions

Are napkin rings still used at dinner parties?

Yes, at any table with cloth napkins. Guests take the napkin out of the ring and place the ring to the left of the plate.

Where does the place card go?

Above the plate, centered, or on the folded napkin. In a holder, it usually stands above the dessert spoon or just right of the glasses.

Do napkin rings have to match the flatware?

It helps. Brass rings suit gold or brass flatware and candlesticks; silver-finish rings suit stainless steel. Jute and glass work with either.

How many napkin rings do I need?

One per seat at your largest regular dinner. Most come in fours, so buy two sets for a table of eight.

Should place cards be handwritten?

Yes. Neat handwriting in dark ink is more gracious than a printed card, and it is quicker than setting up a printer.
