The wedding registry, bought once

Most registries fail in the same way. They are long lists of small, clever things, and the couple ends up with a waffle maker, three cheese boards and no matching plates. The better registry is short and plain: the things you will use every day for the next twenty years, at the grade you would not buy for yourselves.

We picked one in each of the five categories that matter: dinnerware, flatware, glassware, cookware and bed linens. Every pick is sold on Amazon by Amazon.com or by the maker itself, so the whole list can live on one Amazon registry, and each is a set sized for how guests actually give.

The rule for choosing was simple. White or plain steel where possible, so nothing dates. Dishwasher safe where that is realistic, because a registry that needs hand washing gets packed away. Makers that keep the same patterns in the range, so a broken glass or a missing fork can be replaced in ten years.

How we chose

  1. Daily use. Everything here should come out of the cupboard most days, not once a year.
  2. Plain enough to last. White china, clear glass, polished steel, white sheets. Nothing a couple will be tired of by their fifth anniversary.
  3. Easy to give. Sets priced so guests can buy one at a time, from about $100 to $250, with one larger gift for a group.
  4. One registry. All sold on Amazon by Amazon.com or the maker, so one list covers everything.

We read makers’ specifications, warranties, care instructions and the sources listed at the end. We do not accept paid placements. How we choose

The 5 picks, in detail

Mikasa Delray 40-Piece Bone China Dinnerware Set, White, Service for 8

Best overallNo. 1

Mikasa Delray 40-Piece Bone China Dinnerware Set, White, Service for 8

Our take. White bone china for eight at a price that makes it the easiest yes on the list.

Keeps for
Many years of daily use; plain white is easy to add to
Set
Service for 8, 40 pieces
Pieces
Dinner plates 11 in, salad plates 9 in, cereal bowls 6 in, fruit bowls 4 1/4 in, mugs 14 oz
Material
Bone china
Care
Dishwasher and microwave safe

Mikasa's Delray is plain white bone china in a classic round shape, formal enough for a holiday table and plain enough for Tuesday. This set is service for eight: eight each of 11 inch dinner plates, 9 inch salad plates, 6 inch cereal bowls, 4 1/4 inch fruit bowls and 14 ounce mugs.

Bone china is thinner and lighter than stoneware. Delray is dishwasher and microwave safe, which means it will actually be used. At about $150 for forty pieces it also leaves room on the registry for the things that cost more.

Skip it if you want a heavy, rustic plate or a wide pasta bowl; Delray is classic in shape. Add the matching platter and vegetable bowl if guests ask for more.

The catch. No wide rimmed soup or pasta bowls in the set, and the small fruit bowls get little use in most houses.

FORTESSA Doria 18/10 Stainless Steel Flatware, 20 Piece Place Setting, Service for 4, Polished

The flatwareNo. 2

FORTESSA Doria 18/10 Stainless Steel Flatware, 20 Piece Place Setting, Service for 4, Polished

Our take. Polished 18/10 flatware with a fluted handle, from a maker that supplies professional kitchens, in sets of four that guests can give one at a time.

Keeps for
Decades; 18/10 steel resists rust and staining
Set
20 pieces, service for 4
Pieces

Steel
18/10 stainless

Care
Dishwasher safe

Fortessa makes tableware for professional kitchens as well as homes, and its flatware is 18/10 stainless, the grade with enough nickel to resist rust and keep its shine through years of dishwashing. Doria's handles are fluted like a column, which gives them a little texture and weight in the hand.

Each set is a place setting for four: table forks, salad forks, table knives, soup spoons and teaspoons. Register for two or three sets for service for eight or twelve. Guests can buy one set each, which is the point.

Skip it if you prefer a plain, modern handle; Fortessa's Lucca, featured in our flatware guide, is the simpler shape at a higher price.

The catch. Service for 4 per box, so a full registry needs two or three sets, and serving pieces are extra.

ZWIESEL GLAS Vervino Allround Glass (Set of 6)

The glasswareNo. 3

ZWIESEL GLAS Vervino Allround Glass (Set of 6)

Our take. One thin, tall glass for red, white and sparkling wine, made in Germany and safe in the dishwasher.

Made in
Germany
Keeps for
Years; Tritan crystal is made to survive the dishwasher
Set
6 glasses
Capacity
About 23 oz
Size
9 in tall, 4.1 in diameter
Material

Care
Dishwasher safe

A couple does not need four shapes of wine glass. Zwiesel's Vervino Allround is designed to serve red, white and sparkling wine well, with a thin wall, a fine stem and a small etched point in the bottom of the bowl that keeps sparkling wine bubbling.

It is made in Germany from Zwiesel's Tritan crystal, which the maker describes as resilient and strong, and it is dishwasher safe. Each glass holds about 23 ounces and stands 9 inches tall, a generous size that still fits most upper racks.

Register for two sets for a table of twelve. Skip it for a couple who want separate shapes for each grape; Zwiesel and Riedel both make them, at more cost and more cupboard space.

The catch. At 9 inches, check the height of your dishwasher rack and cabinet shelves before registering.

All-Clad D3 Stainless Steel Cookware Set, 10-Piece

The cookware, for a group giftNo. 4

All-Clad D3 Stainless Steel Cookware Set, 10-Piece

Our take. The tri-ply stainless set that professional cooks trust, made in Pennsylvania, sized for a real kitchen.

Made in
USA (Pennsylvania)
Keeps for
A lifetime; limited lifetime warranty
Pieces
8 and 10 in fry pans, 2 and 3 qt saucepans, 3 qt sauté pan, 8 qt stockpot, 4 lids
Construction
Tri-ply, aluminum core, stainless steel
Oven safe
Up to 600°F, broiler safe
Stovetops
All, including induction
Warranty
Limited lifetime

All-Clad invented bonded cookware and has made it in Pennsylvania since 1971. D3 is the original: an aluminum core between layers of stainless steel, so the pans heat quickly and evenly and sear properly. It works on every stovetop, induction included, and goes in the oven or under the broiler to 600°F.

The 10-piece set is the one to register for because every piece gets used: 8 and 10 inch fry pans, 2 and 3 quart saucepans with lids, a 3 quart sauté pan with lid and an 8 quart stockpot with lid. There is nothing in it that will sit in a cupboard.

This is the group gift, or the one to split between family. Skip it if you want nonstick; stainless takes a little learning, mainly heating the pan before adding oil. Hand wash only, which All-Clad specifies.

The catch. About $800, hand wash only, and food sticks until you learn to preheat the pan.

H by Frette Percale Classic Sheet Set (Queen)

The bed linensNo. 5

H by Frette Percale Classic Sheet Set (Queen)

Our take. Crisp white percale from the Italian linen house known for hotel beds, in a complete set.

Keeps for
Several years of weekly washing; percale softens with use
Size
Queen
Includes
Fitted sheet, top sheet, 2 standard pillowcases
Weave
Percale
Color
White

Frette says its linens have been in the best hotels since 1899, and H by Frette is its line for the home. The Percale Classic is the crisp, cool white sheet of a good hotel bed, and the set includes a fitted sheet, a top sheet and two standard pillowcases in queen.

Percale is a plain weave, matte and cool, and it softens with every wash. It suits anyone who sleeps warm. Register for two sets, so one is always clean.

Skip it if you prefer the sheen and warmth of sateen; H by Frette makes the same set in sateen, featured in our sheets guide. Check your mattress depth against the fitted sheet before registering.

The catch. Percale wrinkles, and it feels crisp rather than silky on the first nights.

Every comparison

How many to register for

Plan for eight at the table, twelve if you entertain. That means one set of the Mikasa, two or three sets of the Fortessa, two sets of the glasses and two sets of sheets. Guests like to fill a row, so leave the quantities open.

What to leave off

Single-purpose appliances, formal china you will use twice a year, knife blocks full of filler, and anything in a color you chose for the wedding rather than the house.

Serving pieces are worth adding once the essentials are covered: a large platter, a salad bowl and a gravy boat do more for a dinner party than a second set of glasses.

Replacing breakage

Every pick here is a stock pattern that the maker has sold for years. Keep the registry list; it is the easiest record of exactly what you own when a plate or a glass needs replacing.

Frequently asked questions

What should be on a wedding registry?

Start with five things you will use daily: dinnerware, flatware, glassware, cookware and bed linens. Add serving pieces and extras once those are covered.

Can I put all of these on an Amazon registry?

Yes. Every pick here is sold on Amazon by Amazon.com or the maker, so one Amazon registry covers the whole list.

How many place settings should we register for?

Eight is the usual answer, twelve if you entertain often. Buying sets of four makes it easy for guests to give a complete set each.

Is bone china practical for everyday use?

Bone china is thin and light. Mikasa Delray is dishwasher and microwave safe, which makes it practical for daily meals.

Is All-Clad worth putting on a registry?

It is the classic group gift. D3 is made in the USA, carries a limited lifetime warranty and, cared for, will outlast most kitchens.
