Best Kitchen Scale for Baking and Coffee

A cup of flour can weigh anywhere across a wide range depending on how it was scooped. A gram is always a gram. The scale is the cheapest way to bake better.

The kitchen scale for baking and for coffee

Measuring cups measure volume, and flour, sugar and cocoa pack differently every time they are scooped. Professional bakers weigh everything, and most serious recipes now give grams alongside cups for that reason. A scale also means fewer dishes: set the bowl on it, press tare, add the flour, press tare, add the sugar.

There are two kinds of scale worth owning. A kitchen scale weighs up to 11 pounds or so in 1 gram steps, which is right for flour, butter, meat and bread dough. A coffee scale weighs up to about 2 kilograms in tenths of a gram and has a timer, which is what pour-over and espresso ask for. A baker who works with small amounts of yeast and salt wants the finer steps too.

None of this needs to be expensive. America's Test Kitchen found accurate, easy scales across the price range. What the extra money buys is finer resolution, faster response, a rechargeable battery and, at the top, a good deal of design.

How we chose

  1. Accuracy and resolution. 1 gram steps for general cooking, 0.1 gram for coffee and small amounts of yeast or salt.
  2. Capacity. At least 5 kilograms (11 pounds) for a kitchen scale, so a heavy bowl plus dough stays within range.
  3. A readable display. Large digits that stay visible when a wide bowl sits on the platform.
  4. Sensible controls. An obvious tare button, easy unit switching and an auto-off that does not trip in the middle of a recipe.

The 5 picks, in detail

Escali Primo Digital Food Scale, Chrome

Best overallNo. 1

Escali Primo Digital Food Scale, Chrome

Our take. An 11 pound, 1 gram kitchen scale with two buttons and a lifetime warranty. Most kitchens need nothing more.

The Primo is about as simple as a digital scale gets: an on and tare button, a unit button, and a display and controls sealed under a protective shield so a spill does not get inside. It weighs up to 11 pounds (5,000 grams) in 1 gram steps and reads in grams, ounces or pounds and ounces. It measures 8.5 by 6 inches and turns itself off after four minutes idle.

America's Test Kitchen recommends it, praising the straightforward design that makes it quick to use. Escali backs it with a lifetime warranty, which at this price is remarkable.

Its testers also noted the display could be more prominent and the body feels light and a little fragile. A very wide bowl can shade the display, so weigh into a bowl no larger than you need.

The catch. A small display that a wide bowl can hide, and a light plastic body.

KitchenAid KQ909 Dual Platform Digital Kitchen and Food Scale

The baker's scaleNo. 2

KitchenAid KQ909 Dual Platform Digital Kitchen and Food Scale

Our take. Two scales in one: a large platform for flour and a small precision platform for yeast and salt.

Keeps for
Many years
Large platform
11 lb (5,000 g) x 1 g
Precision platform
16 oz (500 g) x 0.01 g
Display
Two-line backlit LCD, both platforms at once
Surfaces
Stainless steel
Power
3 AAA batteries, included
Auto-off
After 3 minutes

The KQ909 has a large stainless platform that weighs up to 11 pounds (5,000 grams) in 1 gram steps and a small one that weighs up to 16 ounces (500 grams) in hundredths of a gram. A two-line backlit display shows both at once, so the flour and the yeast can be weighed side by side.

That second platform is the point. America's Test Kitchen notes that for yeast and salt a few tenths of a gram can change the finished bread, and a general kitchen scale that reads in whole grams cannot measure 3 grams of instant yeast with any confidence. Bread bakers and anyone making pizza dough by weight will use both platforms every time.

It runs on three AAA batteries, included, and turns off after three minutes without a change in weight. Skip it if you never bake bread; the Escali does everything else for less.

The catch. A three minute auto-off can catch a slow baker mid-recipe.

Greater Goods Coffee Scale with Timer, 0.1g Precision

The inexpensive coffee scaleNo. 3

Greater Goods Coffee Scale with Timer, 0.1g Precision

Our take. Tenths of a gram and a brew timer for about the price of a bag of good beans.

Keeps for
Several years; 5 year coverage
Resolution
0.1 g
Timer
Count up and count down
Platform
5.25 x 5.25 in, removable silicone cover
Units

Power
3 AAA batteries, included
Coverage
5 years

Greater Goods is a St. Louis company, and its coffee scale does the two things pour-over and espresso ask for: it weighs in 0.1 gram steps and it times the brew, counting up or down. A two-color display keeps the weight and the timer readings apart, and the 5.25 inch square platform wears a silicone cover that is heat resistant and dishwasher safe.

It reads in grams, milliliters, ounces, fluid ounces, pounds, and pounds and ounces, and it works for tea and matcha as well as coffee. Three AAA batteries are included, and Greater Goods backs it for five years.

Skip it if you want a rechargeable battery or a flow-rate reading; the Timemore has both. And like any coffee scale, it is not meant for a heavy bowl of dough.

The catch. Battery powered, and a plainer object than the scales above it in price.

TIMEMORE Black Mirror Basic 2 Coffee Scale with Timer, 2kg/0.1g

The rechargeable coffee scaleNo. 4

TIMEMORE Black Mirror Basic 2 Coffee Scale with Timer, 2kg/0.1g

Our take. A thin black scale with a hidden display, flow-rate readout and a battery that charges by USB-C.

Keeps for
Several years; rechargeable battery
Range
0.1 to 2,000 g
Resolution
0.1 g
Features
Timer, auto-timer, flow rate
Battery
1,600 mAh, USB-C charging
Size
6.0 x 5.1 x 1.0 in; about 380 g

Timemore's Black Mirror Basic 2 weighs from 0.1 to 2,000 grams in tenths of a gram, and adds what the cheaper coffee scales lack: a flow-rate reading that shows how fast you are pouring, an auto-timer that starts when water hits the scale, and a 1,600 mAh battery that charges by USB-C. The display hides under a black glass surface until the scale is on, and a silicone pad protects the top and adds grip.

Tom's Guide found its readings matched reference scales in testing, and liked the balance of function and price. It is about 1 inch thick and weighs under a pound, easy to slide into a drawer.

The touch controls are sensitive, which takes some getting used to. Skip it if you only brew once a week; the flow rate matters most to daily pour-over drinkers.

The catch. Touch buttons can register a brushed finger.

Fellow Tally Pro Coffee Scale with Timer, Brew Assist Mode

If money is no objectNo. 5

Fellow Tally Pro Coffee Scale with Timer, Brew Assist Mode

Our take. A beautifully made coffee scale that tells you how much water to pour for the ratio you choose.

Keeps for
Several years; rechargeable battery
Capacity
2,500 g
Resolution
0.1 g
Modes
Weight, Timer, Brew Assist (ratio)
Platform
About 7 x 5.9 in, glass top, removable pan
Battery
Rechargeable, USB-C; about 13 hours of use

Fellow's Tally Pro weighs up to 2,500 grams in 0.1 gram steps on a glass-topped platform about 7 by 6 inches, large enough for most drippers and servers. It has three modes: plain weight, a timer mode, and Brew Assist, where you set a coffee-to-water ratio and the scale shows the target weight to pour to. The dial is metal, the finish matte black, the weigh pan removable.

The battery charges by USB-C and Fellow rates it for 13 hours of continuous weighing, which is a month or two of daily brewing. Reviewers describe it as exceptionally responsive with a handsome display, and Brew Assist as one of the few smart features on a scale that earns its place.

It is a coffee scale priced like a grinder. Skip it unless you brew by weight every day and care about the object on the counter; the Timemore weighs just as finely for a quarter of the price.

The catch. Four times the price of scales that weigh just as precisely.

How to check a scale

A US nickel weighs 5 grams, so ten of them should read 50 grams. It is a quick way to see whether a scale has drifted. For a precision scale, check against small calibration weights, which cost a few dollars.

Batteries running low are the most common cause of odd readings. Replace them before blaming the scale.

Using one well

Set the scale on a hard, level counter, turn it on with nothing on it, then add the bowl and press tare. Weigh the heavy ingredients on the kitchen scale and the small ones, yeast, salt, spices, on the precision platform or a coffee scale.

Keep water away from the underside; wipe the top with a damp cloth and never submerge a scale.

What to avoid

Scales that only read in 5 gram steps. Scales whose display sits under the platform where a bowl hides it. And very light scales that slide when you tip flour in.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a kitchen scale for baking?

You can bake without one, but weighing is more consistent than cups because flour and sugar pack differently each time. Most serious baking recipes now list grams.

What is the difference between a kitchen scale and a coffee scale?

Capacity and resolution. A kitchen scale weighs to about 5 kilograms in 1 gram steps. A coffee scale weighs to about 2 kilograms in 0.1 gram steps and usually has a timer.

Can I use a coffee scale for baking?

For small amounts, yes, and it is excellent for yeast and salt. Its 2 kilogram limit is too low for a heavy bowl of dough.

What about the OXO scale with the pull-out display?

It is America's Test Kitchen's longtime winner, and deserves its reputation. On Amazon US it is currently offered on its own only by third-party sellers, so we have not listed it here.

How accurate does a kitchen scale need to be?

For most cooking, within a few grams is plenty; America's Test Kitchen tests to within 3 grams. For yeast, salt and coffee, 0.1 gram is better.
