This is the answer to the question in the headline. An 8 inch chef's knife, a 6 inch utility knife and a 3.5 inch paring knife, all from Wusthof's Classic line: forged from a single piece of high carbon stainless steel, tempered to 58 HRC, with full tangs and triple riveted synthetic handles. Wusthof has made knives in Solingen for more than two hundred years, and this is its best-selling line.
There is no block. Put the knives on a magnetic strip or in a drawer insert, and put the money you saved toward a bread knife, which is the one knife this set lacks.
Skip it if you prefer the lighter, harder Japanese style, or if you really do want a block on the counter, in which case the seven piece set below costs about $110 more for the bread knife, steel, shears and block.
The catch. No bread knife and no storage; you will need both.
