The cake stand that makes a cake an occasion

The cake stand is the most theatrical piece of serveware most houses own, and the most useful per dollar of theater. It raises one thing above the table, and whatever is on it becomes the centerpiece: a birthday cake, a pie, a tower of cookies, a bowl of lemons on a weekday.

Three things decide whether a stand works. The plate must be wide enough for the cake with a margin for the knife; an 11 inch stand holds a 9 inch cake. The foot must be heavy or wide enough that cutting a slice does not tip it. And it should either come with a dome or accept one, because a covered stand turns into a place to keep the cake for three days.

The six below run from about $38 for a jadeite glass stand to about $140 for a signed Portuguese stoneware one. None is fragile in daily use, but glass and marble each have care rules worth knowing before you buy.

How we chose

  1. Plate size. At least two inches wider than the cakes you bake. An 11 inch stand takes a 9 inch cake.
  2. A steady foot. Wide or heavy enough that slicing does not rock the stand.
  3. A dome, or room for one. A cover keeps a cake fresh on the counter and makes the stand useful between parties.
  4. Clear care. Dishwasher safe where possible; where not, we say so.

The 6 picks, in detail

Lenox French Perle Pedestal Cake Plate, Medium, White

Best overallNo. 1

Lenox French Perle Pedestal Cake Plate, Medium, White

Our take. A stoneware pedestal with a scalloped rim that goes in the dishwasher and comes with a lifetime breakage replacement.

Keeps for
Decades, and Lenox replaces it if it breaks
Size
10.5 in diameter, 5 in high
Material
Stoneware
Finish
Scalloped rim, hand-applied tea stain
Care
Dishwasher and microwave safe
Guarantee
Lifetime breakage replacement (Lenox)

Lenox's French Perle is stoneware with a scalloped rim and a hand-applied tea stain finish that softens the white. The medium cake plate is 10.5 inches across and 5 inches high, tall enough to read as a proper pedestal and wide enough for an 8 or 9 inch cake.

What makes it the one to buy is the practical side. It is dishwasher and microwave safe, which few decorative stands are, and Lenox backs French Perle with a lifetime breakage replacement program. That takes the anxiety out of using it every week rather than twice a year.

Skip it if the kitchen is modern and spare. The scallops and tea stain lean French country; the Villeroy & Boch below is the cleaner white.

The catch. No dome, and at 10.5 inches it is snug for a 9 inch cake with thick frosting.

Martha Stewart Highbrook 11" Jadeite Glass Cake Stand

The sensible entry pointNo. 2

Martha Stewart Highbrook 11" Jadeite Glass Cake Stand

Our take. A handmade jadeite milk glass stand with a ruffled rim, the classic American bakery look at a modest price.

Keeps for
Decades; pressed glass is sturdy if not dropped
Diameter
11 in; fits a 9 in cake
Material
Handmade jadeite milk glass
Rim
Ruffled
Dome
Not included

Jadeite, the pale green milk glass of mid-century diners and farmhouse kitchens, is the look most people picture when they think of a cake stand. This one is 11 inches across, handmade from jadeite milk glass with a ruffled edge and a high-gloss finish, and sized for a 9 inch cake.

The green sets off white frosting, chocolate and fruit tarts alike, and the ruffle catches crumbs that would otherwise land on the table. It is the best looking stand in this guide for the price, and it works on a kitchen counter as well as a dining table.

Skip it if you want a dome; this model comes without one. Highbrook sells a 10 inch jadeite stand with a glass dome for about $50, sized for cakes up to 8.5 inches.

The catch. No dome, and the ruffled rim is harder to slide a cake onto than a flat one.

Gibson Elite Ridgehaven 11" Marble Cake Stand with Glass Lid

Marble, with a domeNo. 3

Gibson Elite Ridgehaven 11" Marble Cake Stand with Glass Lid

Our take. A thick marble plate with a glass cloche, which makes it a cake keeper and a cheese board as well as a stand.

Keeps for
Decades for the marble; the dome is the fragile part
Diameter
11 in; fits a 9 in cake
Material
Marble, with a glass dome
Includes
Marble platter and domed glass lid
Care
Hand wash only

The Ridgehaven is a thick slab of veined marble, 11 inches across, with a domed glass lid that fits over a 9 inch cake. Marble has a naturally cool surface, which suits buttercream and cheese, and the weight keeps it steady while a slice is cut.

The dome is what makes it earn its place. A cake keeps under glass on the counter for a couple of days, visible and protected, and the same stand holds cheese at the end of a dinner party or a stack of cookies through the holidays.

Skip it if the dishwasher is how things get clean. Marble is hand wash only, and it can stain from fruit juice or red wine left sitting.

The catch. Hand wash only, and the stone can stain if acidic fruit or wine sits on it.

Libbey Selene Glass Cake Stand with Dome Lid

Clear glass, with a domeNo. 4

Libbey Selene Glass Cake Stand with Dome Lid

Our take. A clear glass stand and curved dome that disappear on the table and let the cake do the work.

Keeps for
Many years; glass does not wear, only breaks
Pieces
Footed stand and glass dome
Material
Clear glass
Collection
Selene
Care
Hand wash (maker's advice)

Libbey is the Ohio glassmaker best known for restaurant glassware, and the Selene stand is a two-piece set: a clear footed stand and a curved glass dome. Clear glass is the most versatile choice here. It goes with any dinnerware and puts all the attention on what sits on it.

The dome gives a full view of the cake and keeps it fresh on the counter. The Selene shapes are part of a wider line of Libbey serveware, so a matching bowl or platter is easy to add.

Skip it if you want dishwasher convenience. Libbey advises hand washing, and a large glass dome is awkward in a sink. It also shows every fingerprint.

The catch. Hand wash only, and clear glass shows fingerprints and water spots.

Villeroy & Boch For Me Cake Plate on Stand, Premium Porcelain, White

The clean white porcelainNo. 5

Villeroy & Boch For Me Cake Plate on Stand, Premium Porcelain, White

Our take. A plain white German porcelain stand with a wide rim, for a table that prefers line to ornament.

Keeps for
Decades
Collection
For Me
Material
Premium porcelain, white
Care
Dishwasher safe
Dome
Not included

For Me is Villeroy & Boch's plain white porcelain collection, known for its wide rims and little else in the way of ornament. The cake plate on stand carries that shape onto a foot, and it is dishwasher safe, so it can be used as often as it deserves.

Porcelain is thinner and whiter than stoneware, and a white stand shows off every kind of cake, from a dark chocolate torte to a pale lemon sponge. It matches the For Me platters and plates if you already own the pattern, and it sits happily with other white dinnerware if you do not.

Skip it if you want a dome. It is sold on its own, and you will need to find a cloche that fits the rim.

The catch. Twice the price of the Lenox, without its breakage guarantee, and no dome.

Juliska Berry & Thread 14" Cake Stand - Whitewash

If money is no objectNo. 6

Juliska Berry & Thread 14" Cake Stand - Whitewash

Our take. A large, handmade Portuguese stoneware stand with a berry-and-thread border, signed by the maker and safe in the oven.

Made in
Portugal
Keeps for
Decades; each piece is signed
Size
14 in diameter, 4.75 in high
Material
Lead-free stoneware, whitewash glaze
Care
Dishwasher (avoid high heat), freezer, microwave, oven to 500°F
Dome
Sold separately

Berry & Thread is one of Juliska's best known patterns: a raised border of berries and twisted thread, in a whitewash glaze that looks hand finished because it is. The 14 inch stand is made in Portugal, each piece individually signed, and stands 4.75 inches high.

At 14 inches it is the largest stand here, big enough for a layer cake with room for candles and a knife, or a whole spread of pastries at brunch. It is lead-free stoneware and unusually tough: Juliska rates it for the dishwasher (avoiding high heat), freezer, microwave and oven to 500°F.

Juliska designs it to pair with its glass cake domes, sold separately. Skip it if storage is tight; a 14 inch pedestal needs a real shelf.

The catch. Large to store, and the matching dome adds real cost.

Sizing the stand to the cake

Allow at least two inches more than the cake: a 9 inch cake on an 11 inch stand, an 8 inch cake on a 10 inch stand. That leaves room to slide a server underneath and a margin for crumbs.

Getting the cake onto the stand

Build the cake on a thin cardboard round the same size as the layers, then lift the finished cake onto the stand with a wide spatula. A few dabs of frosting on the stand stop the round from sliding.

About Mosser Glass

Mosser Glass, a family business in Cambridge, Ohio, still presses milk glass and jadeite cake plates in the American tradition. We did not include one here because Mosser does not sell them on Amazon itself. They are available from the factory's own shop, and they are worth a look if you want a stand made in the USA.

Frequently asked questions

What size cake stand do I need?

Two inches wider than the cake. For a standard 9 inch layer cake, an 11 inch stand; for an 8 inch cake, 10 inches.

Is a cake stand with a dome worth it?

Yes, if you bake. A domed stand keeps a cake fresh on the counter for a couple of days and turns the stand into everyday storage. The Gibson Elite marble and the Libbey Selene both include one.

Can cake stands go in the dishwasher?

Some can. The Lenox French Perle, Villeroy & Boch For Me and Juliska Berry & Thread are dishwasher safe. Marble and the Libbey glass set should be hand washed.

What is jadeite?

A pale green milk glass popular in American kitchens in the mid 20th century, now made again by several makers. It suits a vintage or farmhouse table.

Is a marble cake stand practical?

It is heavy and steady and stays cool, which suits buttercream and cheese. It must be hand washed and can stain, so wipe it promptly after fruit or wine.
