The flatware to own for life

Most flatware fails in one of three ways. The knife blade rusts or pits at the bolster. The fork tines bend because the steel was stamped thin. Or the pattern disappears, and the day you lose four teaspoons down the disposal you cannot replace them.

All three are avoidable, and buy it for life silverware, in practice, means good stainless rather than sterling or plate. Buy 18/10 stainless for the forks and spoons, look for a knife made of hardened blade steel with a solid or forged handle, and buy from a maker that sells open stock, meaning single pieces and serving pieces sold individually for years after you buy the set.

We looked at the flatware that keeps coming up among people who set a table often, checked each maker's steel, construction and guarantee, and ranked them by what they cost to live with over decades, not what they cost in the box.

How we chose

  1. Steel grade. 18/10 stainless (18 percent chromium, 10 percent nickel) holds its shine and resists corrosion better than 18/0 or 18/8. We wanted it for every piece but the knife blade.
  2. Knife construction. Knives need a harder steel that can hold an edge. Solid and forged knives feel better and last longer than thin stamped blades.
  3. Open stock. Can you buy one dinner fork, a serving spoon or four more place settings a decade from now? If not, the set has a shelf life.
  4. Guarantee and origin. Who made it, where, and what the maker promises in writing.

We read makers’ specifications, warranties, care instructions and the sources listed at the end. We do not accept paid placements. How we choose

The 5 picks, in detail

Liberty Tabletop Pearl 20 Piece Flatware Set, Service for 4

Best overallNo. 1

Liberty Tabletop Pearl 20 Piece Flatware Set, Service for 4

Our take. Heavy 18/10 flatware made from American steel in the last flatware factory in the country, with real open stock behind it.

Made in
USA (Sherrill, New York)
Keeps for
Decades; 25-year warranty against defects
Steel
18/10 stainless, US-melted
Knife
Hollow handle, serrated blade (Pearl)
Place setting weight
About 9.2 oz
Care
Dishwasher safe; avoid chlorine and citrus detergents
Warranty
25 years against manufacturing defects
Open stock
Yes, single pieces and serving pieces

Liberty Tabletop is the retail name of Sherrill Manufacturing, which makes its flatware in Sherrill, New York, in the old Oneida plant. The company says it is the only stainless flatware manufacturer left in the United States, and it uses 18/10 steel melted by American mills.

Pearl is a classic teardrop shape with a beaded edge, sized in the larger Euro style, and a place setting weighs about 9 ounces. There are several other patterns, from the plain Modern America to the embossed Honey Bee. Every one is sold open stock, so replacements and serving pieces are a click away, and the warranty runs 25 years against manufacturing defects.

Skip it if you want a solid one-piece knife in every pattern. Pearl's dinner knife is hollow handled with a serrated blade, which is traditional and comfortable but not what some people expect at this weight. Check the knife options on the pattern you like.

The catch. Popular patterns go on backorder, so buy a few spare teaspoons and forks up front.

Mepra Linea 5-Piece Place Setting

The clean Italian choiceNo. 2

Mepra Linea 5-Piece Place Setting

Our take. Plain, well-balanced 18/10 flatware from a family firm that has made it in the same Italian valley since the 1940s.

Made in
Italy (Lumezzane)
Keeps for
Decades; lifetime coverage on manufacturing defects per retailer listing
Steel
18/10 stainless
Pieces
Table fork, table knife, dessert fork, dessert spoon, soup spoon (Sur La Table set)
Finishes
Mirror, Ice (brushed), PVD colors
Care
Dishwasher safe; no abrasive detergents

Mepra was founded in 1947 by the Prandelli family in Lumezzane, near Brescia, and was the first factory in that valley to make 18/10 stainless flatware. It still makes its flatware there, and it supplies hotels and restaurants as well as homes.

Linea is the quiet one: a flat, straight handle with softly rounded ends, no decoration. The mirror finish is the classic; there are also brushed Ice and colored PVD finishes in gold and gunmetal. It goes in the dishwasher, though Mepra asks you to avoid abrasive detergents and scrub pads.

Skip the PVD colored finishes if you want flatware you never think about. They are durable, but a bright gold fork shows every scratch that plain steel would hide, and it is harder to match later.

The catch. US retailers pack the five-piece setting differently, so check the pieces before you buy more to match.

Villeroy & Boch La Coupole 40-Piece Flatware Set, 18/10 Stainless Steel, Service for 8

The full set at onceNo. 3

Villeroy & Boch La Coupole 40-Piece Flatware Set, 18/10 Stainless Steel, Service for 8

Our take. A complete, well-proportioned 18/10 set for eight from a house that has made tableware since 1748, at about $26 a place setting.

Keeps for
Decades; 18/10 steel does not rust or need polishing
Steel
18/10 stainless, high gloss
Pieces
40: dinner fork, salad fork, knife, soup spoon, teaspoon x 8
Dinner knife
About 9.8 in
Care
Dishwasher safe
Maker
Villeroy & Boch, since 1748

Villeroy & Boch has made porcelain, glass and flatware since 1748, and La Coupole is one of its longest-running patterns: a plain, gently tapered handle in high-gloss 18/10 stainless that sits well beside both classic and modern plates.

The set is five pieces for eight people: dinner fork, salad fork, dinner knife, soup spoon and teaspoon. The dinner knife is just under 10 inches and the pieces have a reassuring weight without being heavy. Buying the full service at once is the cheapest way to a matched table for a dinner party.

Skip it if you want to buy one place setting at a time or add serving pieces later from open stock. Liberty Tabletop and Mepra are better for that. Open the dishwasher door at the end of the cycle to avoid water spots.

The catch. Sold as a boxed service, so replacing one lost teaspoon is harder than with an open-stock maker.

Sabre Paris Bistrot Solid 5-Piece Flatware Set

If you want colorNo. 4

Sabre Paris Bistrot Solid 5-Piece Flatware Set

Our take. Riveted, café-style flatware in a long list of colors, assembled by hand near Paris, with one real limitation.

Made in
France (assembled near Paris)
Keeps for
Many years with low-heat washing; handles are the weak point
Handles
Acrylic, colored through
Blades
European stainless steel
Assembly
By hand, Paris region
Dishwasher
Yes, 45°C (113°F) maximum
Open stock
Individual pieces sold

Sabre assembles almost all of its cutlery by hand in a workshop outside Paris, with blades of European stainless and acrylic handles colored all the way through. Bistrot is the pattern that made it known: a rounded handle held on with three visible rivets, sold in dozens of solid colors, tortoise and pearly finishes.

It is the most fun set here and it makes a plain white table look deliberate. It is also sold open stock, both through Sabre's US store and in individual pieces, so you can replace a lost fork or add a color.

Skip it if you run your dishwasher hot. Sabre asks for 45°C (113°F) maximum, which is below the normal cycle on most American machines. Hand washing or an eco cycle is the price of the look.

The catch. The low dishwasher temperature limit is a real constraint, and resin handles will never last as long as solid steel.

Fortessa Lucca 18/10 Stainless Steel Flatware, 5 Piece Place Setting, Polished

The restaurant standardNo. 5

Fortessa Lucca 18/10 Stainless Steel Flatware, 5 Piece Place Setting, Polished

Our take. Restaurant-grade 18/10 flatware with a sculpted, traditional line, sold one place setting at a time.

Keeps for
Decades; built for restaurant dishwashers
Steel
18/10 stainless, polished
Pieces
Table fork, salad fork, table knife, soup spoon, teaspoon
Sold as
Single 5-piece place settings
Care
Dishwasher safe

Fortessa supplies dinnerware, glassware and flatware to restaurants and hotels, which is a useful recommendation for anything that has to survive daily washing. Lucca is 18/10 stainless with a traditional shape and a clean, sculpted handle in a bright polish.

Each place setting is a table fork, a salad or dessert fork, a table knife, a dessert or soup spoon and a teaspoon, and it is sold by the setting, so you can buy exactly as many as your table seats and add more later.

Skip it if you want something that feels like an heirloom. Lucca is handsome and durable, but it is designed to be used hard rather than admired, and the polish shows fingerprints.

The catch. A bright polish that shows fingerprints and fine scratches with daily use.

Compared.

Every comparison

18/10, 18/8 and 18/0

The numbers are the percentage of chromium and nickel. Chromium makes steel stainless. Nickel adds shine and corrosion resistance. 18/10 is the standard for good flatware. 18/8 is close. 18/0 has no nickel, is cheaper, is magnetic, and dulls and spots sooner.

Knife blades are the exception. They are made from a harder, lower-nickel stainless (often a 400-series steel) so they can take an edge. That is why the blade can spot before the handle does. Dry knives promptly and do not leave them sitting wet in the machine.

Forged versus stamped

Stamped flatware is cut from flat sheet steel. It is lighter and cheaper, and thin stamped forks bend. Forged pieces are formed from thicker stock and hammered or pressed to shape, so the weight sits where it should. Good flatware tends to be heavier stock regardless of method; pick up a fork and press on the tines.

For knives, look for solid one-piece or forged construction, or a well-made hollow handle from a maker you trust. Cheap hollow handles can loosen at the joint over years of hot washing.

Open stock is the whole game

Flatware goes missing a piece at a time. Before you buy, confirm the maker sells single pieces and serving pieces, and buy a few extra teaspoons and forks now. Patterns get discontinued, and finding a match later means secondhand dealers and guesswork.

Frequently asked questions

What silverware is buy it for life?

Stainless flatware, not plated silver, that is 18/10 for the forks and spoons, has a hardened steel knife blade with a solid or forged handle, and comes from a maker that sells open stock so lost pieces can be replaced. Liberty Tabletop, Mepra, Villeroy & Boch and Fortessa all meet that bar.

Is 18/10 really better than 18/0?

Yes, for forks and spoons. The nickel in 18/10 keeps it brighter and more resistant to spotting and pitting. 18/0 is fine for a picnic basket, not for everyday flatware you want to keep.

Can good flatware go in the dishwasher?

Stainless 18/10 can. Remove it promptly and do not let it sit wet. Colored resin handles like Sabre's need a low-temperature cycle.

How many place settings should I buy?

Twelve if you entertain, eight at minimum, plus extra teaspoons and forks. Those two go missing first.

Is there still flatware made in the USA?

Yes. Liberty Tabletop makes stainless flatware in Sherrill, New York, from US-melted steel, and says it is the only remaining US manufacturer.

Why do my knives spot when the forks do not?

Knife blades use a harder steel with less nickel so they can hold an edge. They are less corrosion resistant. Dry them promptly after washing.
