Best Dessert Plates and Salad Plates, Plus Holiday Sets

The small plate does more work than the dinner plate: salad, cheese, cake, toast, a slice of pie at the counter. Own a plain set for every day and, if you like, a patterned one for December.

The dessert plates, plain and for the holidays

A dessert plate is the small plate of a place setting, used for cake, pie, cheese or a first course. Dessert plates and salad plates are close cousins, and most makers now sell one plate for both jobs, somewhere between 7.5 and 9.5 inches across. Smaller than 8 inches is a dessert or bread plate and will hold a slice of cake but not a salad. Nearer 9 inches will hold either, and is the more useful size if you are buying only one set.

The small plate is also the easiest place to use pattern. A table of plain white dinner plates takes on a different character when the pie comes out on something painted, and small plates cost less to own in a second design. That is why this guide has two halves: plain plates that go with anything, and patterned ones, including sets made for holiday desserts.

Check the fine print on patterned plates before you buy. Gold and platinum trim, and some older decorations, mean no microwave, and a few makers advise gentle washing. We say where that applies.

How we chose

  1. Size. 7.5 to 9.5 inches, with the exact diameter from the maker, so you know whether it will take a salad or only a slice of cake.
  2. Care. Dishwasher and microwave limits stated plainly, since patterned and trimmed plates are where the exceptions live.
  3. Open stock. Collections sold by the piece, so a broken plate can be replaced without buying a new set.
  4. Sold by the maker or Amazon. Every plate here is sold on Amazon by Amazon itself or the maker's own US arm.

We read makers’ specifications, warranties, care instructions and the sources listed at the end. We do not accept paid placements. How we choose

The 6 picks, in detail

Le Creuset Stoneware Set of 4 Salad Plates, 8.5 in, White

Best overallNo. 1

Le Creuset Stoneware Set of 4 Salad Plates, 8.5 in, White

Our take. Heavy, glazed stoneware plates that go in the oven, the broiler, the freezer and the dishwasher.

Keeps for
Many years; the glaze is built to resist chips, stains and crazing
Diameter
8.5 in
Material
Glazed stoneware
Pieces
4 plates
Safe for
Freezer, oven, microwave, broiler, dishwasher
Colors
White and a range of Le Creuset glazes

Le Creuset's stoneware is made for daily use, and its salad plate is the sturdiest small plate here. The glaze is non-porous and scratch resistant, and Le Creuset says it resists staining, flavor absorption, cracking and crazing. Each plate is 8.5 inches across.

The care list is the longest of any plate we looked at: freezer, oven, microwave, broiler and dishwasher, and it tolerates metal utensils. A plate that can warm a slice of pie in the oven and then go on the table is more useful than it sounds.

The same plate comes in Le Creuset's colors, from white to Cerise and Marseille blue, sold in sets of four. Skip it if you want something light and delicate; stoneware is heavier in the hand than porcelain.

The catch. Heavier and thicker than porcelain, and a stack of eight takes real cabinet space.

Villeroy & Boch For Me Salad Plate, Premium Porcelain, Made in Germany, 8.5 in

The sensible entry pointNo. 2

Villeroy & Boch For Me Salad Plate, Premium Porcelain, Made in Germany, 8.5 in

Our take. A plain white German porcelain plate at 8.5 inches, sold one at a time for about $19.

Made in
Germany
Keeps for
Decades; hard porcelain in a plain white shape
Diameter
8.5 in
Material
Premium porcelain
Sold
Individually

For Me is Villeroy & Boch's simple white porcelain line, made in Germany, in a size that takes a side salad as easily as a wedge of tart. At about $19 a plate, it is the least expensive way into good European porcelain.

Buying by the plate is the point. Get as many as the table needs, add two for breakage, and replace a chipped one years from now without hunting for a set. Plain white also means it will sit next to whatever dinner plates you already own.

Skip it if you want color or pattern; this is the quiet plate. Villeroy & Boch has been making ceramics since 1748, and this is its everyday end.

The catch. Sold singly, so a set of eight costs about $150; the price per plate is modest, the total is not.

Portmeirion Exotic Botanic Garden 8.5" Salad Plate (Set of 6)

The pattern for the whole yearNo. 3

Portmeirion Exotic Botanic Garden 8.5" Salad Plate (Set of 6)

Our take. Six plates, six different botanical drawings, from the most famous mix-and-match pattern in English pottery.

Made in
England
Keeps for
Decades; the pattern has been in production since 1972
Diameter
8.5 in
Pieces
6 plates, 6 motifs

Dishwasher, microwave, freezer, warm oven
Pattern
Exotic Botanic Garden, after the 1972 Botanic Garden

Susan Williams-Ellis designed Botanic Garden for Portmeirion in 1972, working from the hand-colored plates of an 1817 botanical dictionary. The idea was new at the time: every piece a different plant, so a table set with it never repeats. It is still in production and made in England.

The Exotic version swaps the English garden flowers for moth orchid, red ginger, white water lily, dragonfly, hibiscus and bird of paradise, one on each of the six plates. At 8.5 inches they suit salad, cake or a small lunch, and they are dishwasher, microwave, freezer and warm-oven safe.

Pattern is the risk. If the rest of your table is spare and modern, these will dominate it. For a garden lunch, a spring dessert or any table with a bit of color already on it, they are a pleasure.

The catch. About $33 a plate, and a pattern this distinctive will not suit every table.

Lenox Bayberry 4-Piece Dessert Plate Set

The holiday setNo. 4

Lenox Bayberry 4-Piece Dessert Plate Set

Our take. A set of four holiday dessert plates with hand-sketched berries and greenery, easy enough to use every day in December.

Keeps for
Many holidays; porcelain that goes in the dishwasher and microwave
Diameter
8.25 in
Material
Porcelain
Pieces
4 dessert plates
Care
Dishwasher and microwave safe

Bayberry is Lenox's newer holiday pattern: loose, hand-sketched berries and winter greenery on white porcelain, lighter in spirit than the gold-banded holly of the older Lenox Holiday line. The dessert plates are 8.25 inches across, sold in a set of four.

Unlike most trimmed holiday china, they are both dishwasher and microwave safe, which is what makes a seasonal pattern worth owning. You can use them for cookies on the counter all month, not just for the one dinner.

At 8.25 inches they are dessert plates first, a little small for a full dinner salad. Skip them if you want your holiday table to be formal; for that, look at the Juliska below.

The catch. A casual pattern; it reads as a family Christmas, not a formal dinner.

Villeroy & Boch Toy's Delight Christmas Collection Salad Plate, Premium Porcelain, 9.5 in

The Christmas classicNo. 5

Villeroy & Boch Toy's Delight Christmas Collection Salad Plate, Premium Porcelain, 9.5 in

Our take. A decorated Christmas tree in the center and a red rim, from the holiday pattern people collect a piece at a time.

Keeps for
Many years of Decembers in premium porcelain
Diameter
9.5 in
Material
Premium porcelain
Decoration
Christmas tree center, red rim
Care
Not microwave safe; wipe or wash gently (listing)
Sold
Individually, open stock

Toy's Delight is Villeroy & Boch's Christmas pattern: red rims and a nostalgic painted scene of toys and trees. This 9.5 inch plate, with a Christmas tree at its center and a curved edge, is sold as a breakfast or salad plate and is the right size for a proper slice of cake or a plate of cookies.

The collection is large and sold open stock, which is why people build it up over years: a few plates one Christmas, a cake plate or a mug the next. It is made in Villeroy & Boch's premium porcelain with an impact-resistant edge.

Read the care line. This listing says to wipe it clean and that it is not for the microwave. Treat it as holiday china: hand wash, dry, and put it away in January.

The catch. Not for the microwave, and the listing's care advice is gentle washing, not the dishwasher.

Juliska Country Estate Winter Frolic Ruby Party Plates, Assorted Set/4

If money is no objectNo. 6

Juliska Country Estate Winter Frolic Ruby Party Plates, Assorted Set/4

Our take. Four different snowy scenes of an English country estate at Christmas, on scalloped Portuguese stoneware.

Made in
Portugal
Keeps for
Decades; stoneware rated for the oven and dishwasher
Diameter
8.5 in
Material
Lead-free ceramic stoneware
Pieces
4 plates, assorted scenes
Safe for
Dishwasher (avoid high heat), microwave, freezer, oven to 500 F

Country Estate is Juliska's toile-like pattern of an English manor and its grounds, and Winter Frolic is its Christmas chapter: Santa and the household in the snow, one scene per plate in this set of four, drawn in deep ruby red. Each plate is 8.5 inches with a gently scalloped rim, made in Portugal and signed by the artisan.

They are more practical than they look. Juliska rates its stoneware for the dishwasher (avoiding high heat), microwave, freezer and oven up to 500 degrees, and all of it is lead free. The set arrives in a red gift box, which makes it a sensible present for someone who hosts Christmas.

The pattern also comes in evergreen. Skip it if you prefer your holiday table spare; this is storybook china, and proud of it.

The catch. About $44 a plate, and Juliska advises avoiding citrus-based cleaners and high dishwasher heat.

Compared.

Every comparison

Dessert plate or salad plate?

Most makers now use one plate for both. If a line has two, the dessert plate is usually 7.5 to 8 inches and the salad plate 8.5 to 9. For a single set that does everything, choose 8.5 inches.

Caring for patterned and holiday plates

Metallic trim, gold or platinum, means no microwave, ever. Heavy use of the dishwasher will also wear some printed decorations over years; when a maker says wipe clean or hand wash, believe it.

Store holiday plates with a paper plate or a felt divider between each one, so the glaze of one does not scratch the pattern of the next.

Mixing patterns

A patterned small plate on a plain dinner plate is the easiest way to use pattern at the table. Keep one color in common, red with red or green with green, and the two will look chosen rather than borrowed.

Frequently asked questions

What is a dessert plate used for?

Cake, pie and other sweets, and in practice much more: cheese, a salad, toast, appetizers. That is why a dessert plate of about 8.5 inches, which doubles as a salad plate, is the most used small plate in most houses.

What size is a dessert plate?

Usually 7.5 to 8.5 inches. Salad plates run 8.5 to 9.5 inches. Many makers sell one plate for both jobs at about 8.5 inches.

How many dessert plates should I own?

As many as your largest regular dinner, plus two or four for breakage and for the cheese course. Eight to twelve suits most households.

Can holiday plates go in the dishwasher?

It depends on the maker. Lenox Bayberry and Juliska Winter Frolic are rated for it; the Villeroy & Boch Toy's Delight salad plate listing advises gentle cleaning. Anything with gold trim should be hand washed.

Can I use salad plates for dessert?

Yes. A salad plate of 8.5 to 9 inches is a generous dessert plate and the more useful of the two sizes if you are buying only one set.

Is Portmeirion Botanic Garden still made in England?

The Exotic Botanic Garden salad plates here are listed as made in England. Check the listing of any other piece, as origin can differ across a large collection.
