Made in USA Flatware: The Last American Maker

Stainless flatware made in the United States comes from one factory in upstate New York. The only real choice is the pattern and the size of the set.

The flatware still made in America

For most of the twentieth century American flatware meant Oneida, made in the town of Sherrill, New York. Oneida moved its manufacturing overseas in 2004 and closed the Sherrill plant in May 2005. The next day the plant reopened under new owners as Sherrill Manufacturing, which now sells direct under the name Liberty Tabletop. Oneida flatware is still sold everywhere; it is simply no longer American.

Liberty Tabletop says it is the only maker of stainless steel flatware in the United States, and we found nothing on Amazon that contradicts it. Its claim is also as strong as the FTC standard allows: made in Sherrill from steel it requires to be melted in the United States. That is all or virtually all, with no qualifier needed.

So this guide is one maker, five ways. We would rather say that plainly than dress up an imported set as a rival. The picks run from a plain everyday set to service for twelve, plus the serving pieces most people forget until a holiday.

How we chose

  1. Stated origin. Only flatware whose listing and maker state US manufacture. Every pick here says Made in USA on the listing.
  2. Steel. 18/10 stainless, which holds its shine and resists rust better than the 18/0 used in cheaper sets.
  3. Open stock. Forks disappear and knives go down the disposal. Every pattern here is sold by the piece.
  4. Sold by the maker. Every pick is sold on Amazon by Liberty Tabletop itself.

We read makers’ specifications, warranties, care instructions and the sources listed at the end. We do not accept paid placements. How we choose

The 5 picks, in detail

Liberty Tabletop Annapolis 20 Piece Flatware Set, Service for 4, 18/10 Stainless Steel

Best overallNo. 1

Liberty Tabletop Annapolis 20 Piece Flatware Set, Service for 4, 18/10 Stainless Steel

Our take. A plain teardrop pattern in mirror finish that suits any table and never looks dated.

Decades; 25-year warranty against defects
Steel
18/10 stainless, domestically sourced
Pieces
4 each: dinner fork, dinner knife, place spoon, teaspoon, salad fork
Finish
Polished mirror
Care
Dishwasher safe

Annapolis is Liberty Tabletop's simplest classic shape: a teardrop handle with no ornament, polished to a mirror finish. It sits comfortably beside both old china and plain white plates, which is exactly what a first good set should do.

The set is five pieces for four people: dinner fork, dinner knife, place spoon, teaspoon and salad fork. The listing states 100% made in USA, in Sherrill, New York, with materials sourced domestically, and it is dishwasher safe. Larger sets and single pieces are sold in the same pattern.

If you prefer a brushed look that hides scratches, the same shape comes as Satin Annapolis, below. Skip Annapolis if you want decoration; Pearl or one of the embossed patterns will suit you better.

The catch. Mirror finish shows fine scratches with daily use; that is the look of any polished flatware over time.

Liberty Tabletop Econo-Line 24 Piece Silverware Set, Service for 6, Plain Mirror

The everyday entry pointNo. 2

Liberty Tabletop Econo-Line 24 Piece Silverware Set, Service for 6, Plain Mirror

Our take. The least expensive way into American flatware: plain, solid and no salad forks.

Made in
USA (New York)
Keeps for
Decades
Steel
18/10 stainless, domestically sourced
Pieces
6 each: dinner fork, dinner knife, place spoon, teaspoon
Weights
Fork 1.2 oz, knife 3.9 oz (listing)
Care
Dishwasher safe

Econo-Line is Liberty Tabletop's plainest pattern, and the listing is unusually specific about it: made in New York from domestically sourced 18/10 stainless. The set is four pieces for six people: dinner fork, dinner knife, place spoon and teaspoon.

The listing gives the weights. The forks and place spoons are about 1.2 ounces each and the knife about 3.9 ounces, so the pieces are lighter than the premium patterns but still real 18/10 steel. It suits a kitchen drawer, a weekend house or a family that loses forks.

There are no salad forks, and the shape is deliberately plain. Skip it if the table is the point; buy it if you want American flatware for daily use at a sensible price.

The catch. Light in the hand compared with the premium patterns, and no salad forks.

Liberty Tabletop Pearl 20 Piece Flatware Set, Service for 4

The dressier patternNo. 3

Liberty Tabletop Pearl 20 Piece Flatware Set, Service for 4

Our take. A beaded-edge teardrop in the larger European size, for a table set to impress a little.

Made in
USA (Sherrill, New York)
Keeps for
Decades; 25-year warranty against defects
Steel
18/10 stainless, domestically sourced
Knife
Hollow handle, serrated blade
Place setting weight
About 9.2 oz
Warranty
25 years against manufacturing defects

Pearl takes the teardrop shape and adds a line of embossed dots along the edge. It is sized slightly larger than traditional American flatware, and it feels it. A place setting weighs about 9 ounces.

It is the same factory and the same claim: 100% made in USA in Sherrill, New York, 18/10 steel sourced domestically, dishwasher safe, with a 25-year warranty against manufacturing defects.

The dinner knife is hollow handled with a serrated blade, which is traditional and comfortable. Skip it if you want a solid one-piece knife, and check the knife on any pattern before buying service for twelve.

The catch. Costs about half again as much as Annapolis for what is mostly a decorative difference.

Liberty Tabletop Satin Annapolis 65 Piece Flatware Set for 12, 18/10 Stainless Steel

For the whole tableNo. 4

Liberty Tabletop Satin Annapolis 65 Piece Flatware Set for 12, 18/10 Stainless Steel

Our take. Service for twelve plus five serving pieces, in a brushed finish that hides wear.

Made in
USA (Sherrill, New York)
Keeps for
Decades; 25-year warranty against defects
Steel
18/10 stainless, domestically sourced
Pieces
12 five-piece settings plus 5 serving pieces
Finish
Brushed satin
Warranty
25 years against manufacturing defects

Satin Annapolis is the same teardrop as Annapolis with a brushed finish instead of a mirror. Brushed steel hides the fine scratches that daily use leaves on polished flatware, which matters more across sixty-five pieces.

The set is five pieces for twelve people plus a serving spoon, slotted spoon, butter knife, sugar spoon and cold meat fork. That is a full holiday table in one box, at under $30 a place setting with the serving pieces included.

It is a lot of flatware for a small household. Skip it unless you regularly set for more than eight; buy service for four and add open stock later instead.

The catch. Satin finish can look duller beside polished serving pieces from another set.

Liberty Tabletop Annapolis 3 Piece Stainless Steel Hostess Set, Polished

The serving pieces, about $58No. 5

Liberty Tabletop Annapolis 3 Piece Stainless Steel Hostess Set, Polished

Our take. A gravy ladle, pie server and casserole spoon, the three pieces a holiday table always lacks.

Warranty
25 years (listing)

Most flatware sets stop at the place setting, and the gap shows at Thanksgiving. This set covers it: a gravy ladle, a pie server and a casserole spoon, in the polished Annapolis pattern.

The listing states made in the USA from 18/10 stainless steel and gives the same 25-year warranty. It is dishwasher safe. It also comes in the other Liberty Tabletop patterns, so it can match whichever set you choose.

Skip it if your set already came with serving pieces, as the 65 piece sets do. Otherwise it is a good small host gift for anyone who owns Liberty flatware.

The catch. No serving fork or slotted spoon; those are sold separately.

What happened to Oneida

Oneida moved manufacturing overseas in 2004 and closed its Sherrill, New York, plant in 2005. The brand is still sold widely, including patterns that look much like its old American ones, but current Oneida flatware is imported. Older pieces stamped Oneida Community or Oneida Ltd. and made before 2005 may well be American, and they turn up often at estate sales.

How to read a flatware listing

Look for the words Made in USA and a place. Liberty Tabletop's listings name Sherrill or New York. "American design," "American heritage" or a flag on the box says nothing about the factory. Under the FTC standard, an unqualified Made in USA claim means all or virtually all of the product is made here.

Also check the steel. 18/10 means about 18 percent chromium and 10 percent nickel; it holds a shine and resists rust. Sets marked 18/0 have no nickel and cost less for a reason.

Care

Everything here is dishwasher safe. Unload promptly so pieces do not sit wet, keep stainless apart from any silver plate in the basket, and avoid detergents with lemon or chlorine, which can spot stainless over time.

Frequently asked questions

Is any flatware still made in the USA?

Yes. Liberty Tabletop makes stainless flatware in Sherrill, New York, in the former Oneida plant, and says it is the only stainless flatware maker in the country.
