Best Everyday Dinnerware Sets: Stoneware and Porcelain

The everyday set is the one that goes through the dishwasher twice a day and gets stacked by whoever is clearing. Buy it for chip resistance, weight and oven and microwave limits, not for how it looks in the photograph.

The everyday dishes that survive the dishwasher

Everyday dishes and good china do different jobs. The formal white set comes out for holidays and is washed with some care; our guide to white dinnerware covers it. The everyday set is loaded into the dishwasher by children, reheated in the microwave, stacked hot and dropped on tile. It should be chosen the way you choose a kitchen tool.

Three materials dominate. Stoneware is clay fired at a high temperature until it is dense and impervious to water. It is thick, heavy, warm-looking and usually glazed in color, and its weakness is the rim, which can chip if the glaze is soft. Porcelain is fired hotter from a finer clay body, so it can be thinner, lighter and harder for the same strength. Corelle's Vitrelle is neither: it is laminated tempered glass, three layers thick, and it is among the most chip-resistant everyday plates sold.

Weight matters more than most people expect. A heavy stoneware set feels substantial on the table and tiresome in a high cupboard. Check the plate diameter too. A 10.5 inch dinner plate is the modern standard, and anything much larger may not fit an older cabinet or dishwasher rack.

How we chose

  1. Chip resistance. Rim strength and glaze hardness, as the maker states them and as owners report after years of use.
  2. Dishwasher and microwave. Every set here is rated for both. Oven and broiler ratings were noted where the maker gives them.
  3. Weight and size. Plate diameter, bowl capacity and how heavy a stack is to lift into a cupboard.
  4. Replaceability. Open stock sold by the maker, so a broken plate can be replaced without buying a new set.

We read makers’ specifications, warranties, care instructions and the sources listed at the end. We do not accept paid placements. How we choose

Noritake Colorwave Clay 16-Piece Coupe Dinnerware Set, Service For 4

Best overallNo. 1

Noritake Colorwave Clay 16-Piece Coupe Dinnerware Set, Service For 4

Our take. Sturdy stoneware in a quiet matte glaze, from a century-old Japanese china maker, in shapes and colors made to mix.

Dishwasher and microwave safe

Noritake has made tableware since the early twentieth century, and Colorwave is its everyday stoneware line: a matte glaze on a coupe shape without a rim. Clay is the most neutral of the colors, a soft gray-beige the maker compares to creek pebbles and poured concrete.

The set is four each of a 10.5 inch dinner plate, an 8.75 inch salad plate, a 22 ounce, 7 inch soup and cereal bowl and a 12 ounce mug. It is dishwasher and microwave safe. The 22 ounce bowl is a generous size, big enough for pasta or a salad as a meal.

Colorwave comes in square, rim and coupe shapes and a range of colors meant to be mixed, so adding pieces later is easy. Skip it if you want white, or a glossy glaze that wipes clean at a touch.

The catch. Matte glazes can show gray marks from knives and forks; a mild cleanser removes them.

Corelle Vitrelle 18-Piece Service for 6 Dinnerware Set, Winter Frost White

The sensible entry pointNo. 2

Corelle Vitrelle 18-Piece Service for 6 Dinnerware Set, Winter Frost White

Our take. Laminated glass that is light, thin and very hard to chip, at about $12 a place setting.

Keeps for
Decades with ordinary care
Material
Vitrelle three-layer tempered glass
Set
6 dinner plates, 6 appetizer plates, 6 soup/cereal bowls
Oven

Care
Dishwasher and microwave safe
Shipping weight

Corelle is made of Vitrelle, a tempered glass that Corning introduced in 1970: two kinds of glass laminated into three layers, clear outside and opaque white inside. The result is a plate that is thin and light but resists chips and cracks far better than ceramic. Winter Frost White is the plain white pattern, and the set is six dinner plates, six appetizer plates and six soup or cereal bowls.

It is the right set for a young family, a first kitchen or a rental, and the best option for anyone who finds heavy stoneware hard to lift. The glass is non-porous, dishwasher safe and rated by Corelle for the microwave and for reheating in a preheated oven up to 350°F.

Skip it if you want dishes that feel like pottery. Corelle is thin and sounds like glass. Mind the maker's warning, too: sudden temperature changes, such as pouring cold liquid onto a hot plate, can shatter it.

The catch. When Vitrelle does break, it can shatter into sharp fragments rather than cracking in two.

Villeroy & Boch Artesano Original 16 Piece Dinnerware Set, Creamy White

The porcelain choiceNo. 3

Villeroy & Boch Artesano Original 16 Piece Dinnerware Set, Creamy White

Our take. German porcelain with a soft, hand-thrown look, strong enough for daily use and good enough for guests.

Premium porcelain
Set
4 each: 10.5 in dinner, 8.5 in salad, 16 oz pasta bowl, 14.5 oz rice bowl

Creamy white

Villeroy & Boch has made ceramics since 1748, and Artesano Original is its casual porcelain: a warm creamy white with slightly irregular, handmade-looking shapes, made in Germany of the company's premium porcelain. It is the everyday set that also looks right at a dinner party.

This set is built for how people eat now. Instead of soup bowls and mugs it has four each of a 10.5 inch dinner plate, an 8.5 inch salad plate, a 9 inch, 16 ounce pasta bowl and a 5.5 inch, 14.5 ounce rice bowl. Porcelain is harder and thinner than stoneware, so these are lighter to stack for their size. They are dishwasher and microwave safe.

Skip it if you want a bright, cool white; Artesano is creamy by design. The Artesano range is large, with serving pieces in the same glaze.

The catch. No mugs or soup bowls in this set, so a household that eats cereal every morning will need to add them.

Le Creuset Stoneware Dinnerware Set, 16 pc., Oyster

If money is no objectNo. 4

Le Creuset Stoneware Dinnerware Set, 16 pc., Oyster

Our take. Heavy, glossy stoneware that goes from freezer to oven to table to dishwasher without complaint.

Keeps for
Many years; the glaze resists chips, scratches and stains
Material
Glazed stoneware
Set
4 each: 10.5 in dinner plate, salad plate, soup bowl, mug
Heat
Freezer, oven, broiler and microwave safe (maker)
Care
Dishwasher safe; metal utensils fine
Shipping weight
About 25 lb for 16 pieces

Le Creuset's stoneware comes in the same colors as its cast iron, and the dinnerware set is the most capable everyday set here. Four 10.5 inch dinner plates, four salad plates, four soup bowls and four mugs, in Oyster, a warm pale gray.

The glaze is the point. Le Creuset describes it as non-porous, scratch-resistant and nearly nonstick, resisting chips, stains and crazing, and rates its stoneware for the freezer, oven, broiler, microwave and dishwasher, and for metal utensils. You can warm the plates in the oven before dinner or finish a gratin in the soup bowls.

It is heavy, as all good stoneware is, and the set is the priciest here by some margin. Skip it if you store plates overhead, or if you want a quieter, matte look.

The catch. Weight. A stack of eight of these plates is a two-handed lift.

Compared.

Every comparison

Stoneware, porcelain or glass

Stoneware is warm, heavy and forgiving of rough handling but can chip at the rim. Porcelain is harder and lighter for the same strength and chips less, though a hard knock will crack it. Corelle's laminated glass is the lightest and the hardest to chip, and the least like pottery.

Care

Load plates so their rims do not knock together in the rack; most chips happen there, not at the table. Avoid sudden temperature changes, such as a cold plate into a hot oven. Gray marks from cutlery on matte glazes come off with a paste of baking soda or a mild powdered cleanser.

How much to buy

Buy service for eight even if you are four. Everyday plates break, and a set that is a few pieces short is hard to set a table with. Choose a line sold as open stock so you can replace single pieces.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most chip-resistant everyday dinnerware?

Corelle's Vitrelle laminated glass. Among ceramics, porcelain generally chips less than stoneware, and a hard glaze such as Le Creuset's helps stoneware hold up.

Is stoneware or porcelain better for everyday use?

Porcelain is lighter and harder for its thickness. Stoneware is heavier and warmer-looking. Both are fine for daily use if the maker rates them for the dishwasher and microwave.

Can stoneware go in the oven?

Some can. Le Creuset rates its stoneware for the oven and broiler. Check each maker's limits before putting any dinnerware in the oven.

What size should dinner plates be?

About 10.5 inches is the modern standard. Measure your cupboard and dishwasher before buying anything larger.

Why do matte plates get gray marks?

Steel cutlery leaves a trace of metal on a matte glaze. It is on the surface, not in the glaze, and cleans off with baking soda or a mild cleanser.
