The Best Coffee Mugs: Porcelain and Stoneware Worth Owning

The mug is the most used piece of tableware in the house, and usually the least considered. A good one holds enough, keeps its glaze, and feels right in the hand at seven in the morning.

The coffee mugs worth drinking from every morning

Most kitchens run on a cupboard of mismatched mugs: a conference giveaway, a souvenir, one with a chip everyone avoids. Nothing wrong with that, except that the mug is the one piece of tableware used every single day, and it is worth owning a few that were made properly.

Three things separate a good mug from a promotional one. The body, which should be dense enough not to absorb water and craze, whether it is hard porcelain, vitrified china or well-fired stoneware. The rim, which takes most of the knocks. And the handle, which should take more than two fingers and not heat up. Capacity matters too. A mug sold as 12 ounces is measured to the brim, so it holds a comfortable 10 once you leave room to carry it.

We read the makers' listings and care pages and sorted five mugs from the plain German porcelain you can buy one at a time to the English-made set with a ten-year chip guarantee.

How we chose

  1. Dense body. Porcelain, vitrified china or stoneware fired hard enough that it will not soak up water, craze or stain.
  2. Chip-resistant rim. The rim takes every knock against the tap and the dishwasher rack. Makers that reinforce it, or guarantee it, rank higher.
  3. A real handle. Room for more than two fingers and a shape that stays cool.
  4. True capacity. Sizes quoted by the maker, with the understanding that brim capacity is not a full cup of coffee.

We read makers’ specifications, warranties, care instructions and the sources listed at the end. We do not accept paid placements. How we choose

The 5 picks, in detail

Le Creuset Stoneware Vancouver Mug, Set of 4, 14 oz. each, White

Best overallNo. 1

Le Creuset Stoneware Vancouver Mug, Set of 4, 14 oz. each, White

Our take. A generous 14 ounce stoneware mug with a thick enamel glaze that takes the dishwasher and the oven without complaint.

Keeps for
Many years; dense enameled stoneware resists crazing and chipping
Material
Enameled stoneware
Capacity
14 oz each
Oven
To 500°F (maker's rating for its stoneware)
Care
Dishwasher, microwave and freezer safe
Sold as
Set of 4

Le Creuset's stoneware is fired dense so it does not absorb moisture, which the maker says prevents the cracking, crazing and rippling that ruin cheaper glazed mugs. The exterior enamel resists stains and scratches from spoons, and the glazed interior releases coffee and tea residue easily.

The Vancouver is Le Creuset's standard mug: a straight, slightly flared cup holding 14 ounces, with a broad handle. That is enough for a proper morning coffee with milk. Le Creuset rates its stoneware for the dishwasher, microwave, freezer and oven to 500°F, so the same mug works for a baked custard or a warming pudding.

Skip it if you want something light. Stoneware is heavier than porcelain, and four of these take up real shelf space. White is the safe choice; the colored glazes are the brand's signature but will not suit every table.

The catch. Heavy in the hand, and not for the stovetop or any direct flame.

Villeroy & Boch Artesano Original Mug, Creamy White, 10 oz

The sensible entry pointNo. 2

Villeroy & Boch Artesano Original Mug, Creamy White, 10 oz

Our take. A plain German porcelain mug with a rustic hand-thrown look, sold one at a time for about the price of a sandwich.

Made in
Germany
Keeps for
Decades; the rim is made to take restaurant use
Material
Premium porcelain, creamy white
Capacity
10 oz
Clearance
Fits machines with 4.1 in or more
Care
Dishwasher and microwave safe
Sold as
Single mug

Artesano Original is Villeroy & Boch's rustic line: undecorated creamy white premium porcelain with the slightly irregular shape of a hand-thrown pot. The mug holds 10 ounces, and the listing says it is made in Germany, with shock- and impact-resistant edges meant for catering use as well as the home.

It is sold individually, which is the reason to start here. Buy two, see whether you like the weight and the handle, and add more later. The maker also notes it fits under coffee machines with up to 4.1 inches of clearance, which matters if you brew straight into the cup.

Skip it if you drink large coffees. Ten ounces to the brim is a modest cup, and people who fill a mug to the top will want something bigger.

The catch. Small for anyone who takes a big mug of coffee, and the creamy white is warmer than a bright white set.

Mikasa Italian Countryside Mug 11.5-Ounce, Set of 4

The set for the everyday cupboardNo. 3

Mikasa Italian Countryside Mug 11.5-Ounce, Set of 4

Our take. A long-running white pattern with fluted bands, at about $12 a mug, from a line with a full range of matching pieces.

Keeps for
Years of daily use; an open pattern, so replacements are easy to find
Material
Porcelain (per Mikasa)
Capacity
11.5 oz
Height
About 3.75 in
Care
Dishwasher and microwave safe
Sold as
Set of 4

Italian Countryside is one of Mikasa's best-known patterns: white with fluted bands and scroll detailing meant to recall classical columns. Mikasa lists the current mug as porcelain, 11.5 ounces, about 3.75 inches tall, and dishwasher and microwave safe.

The case for it is breadth. The pattern has plates, bowls, bakers and serving pieces, so a household that already eats off Italian Countryside can fill the mug shelf to match, and replace a broken one without hunting. At about $12 a mug, it is the cheapest way here to own four that look alike.

Skip it if you want a plain mug. The fluting is the whole design, and it will look out of place next to modern, undecorated dishes. Some owners also report the newer mugs feel heavier than the older ones.

The catch. The fluted pattern is decorative and traditional; it does not suit a plain modern table.

Made In Cookware - Set of 4 - Coffee Mug Set - 12 oz - White - Porcelain - Crafted in England

The English-made oneNo. 4

Made In Cookware - Set of 4 - Coffee Mug Set - 12 oz - White - Porcelain - Crafted in England

Our take. Hard-wearing vitrified china from Stoke-on-Trent, with a ten-year no-chip guarantee that no other mug here offers.

Capacity
12 oz each
Size
4.8 in wide with handle, 3.6 in tall
Oven
To 580°F (maker's rating)
Guarantee
10-year no-chip guarantee

Made In's mugs are high alumina vitrified china, fired in Stoke-on-Trent, the center of English pottery for three centuries. It is the same family of material used for hotel and restaurant china: fully glazed, hard to scratch and resistant to thermal shock.

Made In rates them for the dishwasher, the microwave and the oven to 580°F, and backs them with a ten-year no-chip guarantee. They hold 12 ounces, are 3.6 inches tall and stack, which helps in a crowded cupboard. The wide opening is meant to let the aroma of the coffee come through.

Skip it if you want a big mug. Twelve ounces to the brim is a medium cup, and owners who drink large coffees have asked Made In for a bigger size. The plain white shape is quietly restaurant-like, which some will find too plain.

The catch. A medium mug, not a large one, and the look is plain hotel china rather than handmade.

Villeroy & Boch NewWave Caffe Collection Coffee Mug, Set of 4, Premium Porcelain, Made in Germany, 8 oz Capacity, Rich, Creamy White

The design pieceNo. 5

Villeroy & Boch NewWave Caffe Collection Coffee Mug, Set of 4, Premium Porcelain, Made in Germany, 8 oz Capacity, Rich, Creamy White

Our take. An asymmetric, wave-shaped German porcelain mug for people who want the cup itself to be worth looking at.

Made in
Germany
Keeps for
Decades; hard, scratch-resistant porcelain made for restaurant use
Material
Premium porcelain, creamy white
Capacity
8 oz each
Size

Set of 4

NewWave is Villeroy & Boch's deliberately unround collection: the rim dips in a wave and the handle curves away from the body. The Caffè mug holds 8 ounces, is made in Germany of premium porcelain, and the maker cites shock- and impact-resistant edges and a hardness and scratch resistance meant for restaurant use.

It is a mug for espresso drinks, flat whites and a cup of tea rather than a big morning coffee. The shape makes it a small event on the table, and it pairs with the rest of the NewWave range if you want matching cups, saucers and plates.

Skip it if you like a mug that disappears into the kitchen, or if you drink by the pint. It is the most expensive mug per ounce here, and the design is the reason to pay for it.

The catch. Small, and the asymmetric shape is a design statement that not everyone will want at breakfast every day.

Compared.

Every comparison

Porcelain, china or stoneware

Porcelain and vitrified china are fired hottest and are the thinnest and hardest for their weight. They keep a clean white and resist chipping well. Stoneware is thicker and heavier, holds heat a little longer in the hand, and takes colored glazes beautifully, but its rim is more likely to chip if knocked against a tap.

Any of them will outlast a promotional mug by years. Choose by how heavy you like a cup to feel and how the rest of your dishes look.

Tea stains and care

Every glazed mug eventually shows a tea or coffee ring on the inside. A paste of baking soda and water lifts it without scratching the glaze. Avoid scouring powders and metal pads, which dull the surface and make stains take faster.

How many to own

One per person in the house, plus two for guests, is a reasonable minimum. Buying a set of four in one pattern and letting the rest be personal favorites keeps the cupboard orderly without being severe.

Frequently asked questions

What size coffee mug should I buy?

For a standard cup of coffee with milk, 12 to 14 ounces. Makers quote capacity to the brim, so a 12 ounce mug holds about 10 ounces comfortably.

Is porcelain or stoneware better for a mug?

Porcelain is lighter, harder and more chip-resistant. Stoneware is heavier and warmer-looking, and takes color well. Both last for years if they are dense and well glazed.

Can Le Creuset mugs go in the oven?

Yes. Le Creuset rates its stoneware for the oven to 500°F, as well as the microwave, freezer and dishwasher. Never put stoneware on a stovetop or open flame.

Which mug is least likely to chip?

Made In's vitrified china mugs carry a ten-year no-chip guarantee, and Villeroy & Boch rates its porcelain edges as impact resistant for restaurant use.

Are these mugs dishwasher safe?

All five are dishwasher and microwave safe according to their makers.
